Paper manufacturers have raised their product prices by an average2.5 per cent across all segments for January, in order to pass on theincrease in raw materials such as pulp and paper chemicals. This is thesecond price increase in three months after paper producers had, inNovember, reversed a one per cent price cut they had implemented inSeptember. With the increase in dollar and fuel rates printers need to becautioned for further escalations in the near future.

Philanthropy continues to be prime in the minds of DPA members.Printers’ Day this year again was celebrated with the same spirit byoffering meals and distributing books to about 800 children at, AryaAnathalaya, an orphanage in Delhi. The very fact that ExecutiveMembers themselves serve meals to the children is of how philanthropyis more than writing a check and a reminder that anyone, not just thewealthy, can make significant contributions to their community.

It is also the time of the year when a new team takes over at thehelm of affairs of the Delhi Printers Association. Once again with aunanimous approval the new office bearers and the executivemembers were elected for the term of 2018-19.

Friends,Last month I got a chance to attend two events pertaining to our

industry. Calendar launch by Galgo Paper and an Informal get together byAvantika Printers (P) Ltd.

At the calendar launch of Galgo Papers, I met the printers from all overDelhi-NCR. The new samples printed on the specialty papers marketed byKRAFTILE INTERNATIONAL were on display. Subodh and Sunit both deserveapplause for taking specialty paper to new heights. Each one of thesamples displayed were a master piece in their own way but an A2 sizehard bound book for “TRUMP TOWERS” was the show stopper. This 274 pagebook was printed on 130gsm IRIS speciality paper. All the pages had adense black ground, aqueous coated and pasted back weighed around 10kgs. This book was printed and bound by LUSTRA PRESS, Bahadurgarh.LUSTRA team deserves an applause for the books.

At the informal gathering to celebrate 25 years of Avantika Printers (P)Ltd. I met printer friends from Okhla as well as entrepreneur from BNIfraternity. M. N. Pandey Ji has been a dear friend for the last two decadessince we bumped into each other getting our jobs printed at AJANTAOFFSET, Wazirpur. Avantika team had also displayed a wide range ofproducts printed and fabricated at their printing unit. The display showedthat it is not just the heavy investment in press machinery but also pre-pressand post-press with the combined skills and techniques of the family runshow that has managed to create a niche space of his own in terms ofquality and workmanship. His take on the price reduction war unleashed bythe Nehru Place, Gole Market, Naraina print shop’s is “SELL PRODUCT” andnot PRINT to sustain and grow.

I hope my experience shared would help you in your quest forexcellence.

Friends,

The Indian economy has recovered from the disruptions caused bydemonetisation of high value currency notes in November 2016 andthe implementation of the unified Goods and Services Tax from July 1,2017. The benefits of the first are generally debated for its pros andcons with varied views, but the second was due for long and hasmedium and long-term advantages. As expected, the Indianeconomy attained a growth of 7.2% during the quarter ended 31stDecember 2017 from 6.2% in the preceding quarter.

In the context of the encouraging trends impacting growth of theprint business, we must take heart from the outcome of the recentlyconcluded New Delhi World Book Fair, as organised by National BookTrust at Pragati Maidan on 6th January 2018. This year’s annual Fair, with the topical theme ‘Environment and Climate Change’, not onlyattracted in the vast area of 30,000 sq. mts more than 800 publishersand 1500 stalls from 40 countries, but also a whopping footfall of 12lakh visitors during the nine-day event.

Inaugurating the Fair the Human Resource Development Minister Mr.Prakash Javadekar stated that “Books belong to a different worldthat enriches human life. Books are as important as we require foodto live and sleep to take rest. They help humans to develop andencompass all the knowledge.” The Chairman of NBT Mr. Baldeo BhaiSharma welcomed book lovers to the Maha Kumbh of books andannounced that the Trust has not only published books in Sanskrit butalso initiated a scheme called ‘Har Haath Ek Kitab.’ Dwelling on thetheme of the Fair, distinguished environmentalist Ms Sunita Narainexhorted the need to reinvent ways to curb pollution and ensureclean environment to future generations.

As the Indian book market promises a considerable growth potential, the Ambassador of the Delegation of European Union to India Mr.Tomasz Kozlowski stated that interest among European publishers inthe Indian market will continue to grow in the coming years. Thoughthe use of e-books might revolutionise the book markets both inEurope and India, yet the growing Indian market will bringcontemporary European literature even closer to Indian people.

If we take the huge success of the World Book Fair as an indication ofthe growing demand for printed books, the future of our print businessappears quite bright.

Uflex claims for itself, to bethe first Indian company tomanufacture glitter printinggravure cylinders on its directlaser engraving line.

Pigments of glitter inks aresubstantially bigger in sizeas compared to conventionalgravure inks thereforerotogravure printing onsubstrates using glitter inkshas always been a challengefor converters.

Talking about the newlydeveloped g cylinder PKAgarwal, joint presidentcylinders business at UflexLimited said: “Thecustomisation of cellgeometry of the rotogravurecylinder on our direct laserengraving line is the realinnovation here. Pigments ofthe glitter ink have atendency to get stuck insidethe pits/ cells of the cylinder(cell filling). When theprinting surface is sand-

wiched between the impres-sion roller and the gravurecylinder, the high solidcontents of the glitter ink gettransferred from recessedcells to the substrate withthe help of capillary actionand the tangential force ofthe roller.”

Explaining further aboutthe process PK Agarwal said:“Glitter inks unlike otherconventional gravure inks donot possess self-curingproperties. Therefore toenable quick and effectivecuring of the glitter ink wedeveloped a light emittingdiode (LED) curing system. The high solid content of theglitter ink on the substrateimparts superior tactileeffect along with theshimmer enhancing theshelf impact of the pack.”The specialty glitter ink hasbeen manufactured forflexible substrates such as

paper and heat sensitivefilms and can be cured usingLED lamps applied in-linewith gravure printing processusing solvent or water-basedink system.

reasons how your printingoperation can save time andmoney with reduced down-time and improved customerloyalty.

Extend the Life of YourEquipment

Preventive maintenance(PM) programs are designedto preserve and restoreequipment reliability beforethe unit has the opportunityto fail. Not only doespreventive maintenanceextend the life of your asset,it enables higher degree ofperformance and premiumquality output. Printingcompanies that take thetime to maintain theirequipment regularly ensurethat they are getting the bestperformance possible out oftheir machines for as long aspossible.

Reduce DowntimeEquipment performance

goes hand-in-hand withprofitability. If printingpresses go down, so doincoming dollars that impactyour bottom-line. The maingoal of preventive mainte-nance is to avoid or mitigatethe consequences ofequipment failure. Incorpo-rating PM activities into yourworkflow reduces thelikelihood of extendeddowntime, meaning morerolls of finished product outthe door. When presses arerunning efficiently andeffectively, the more profit acompany can make.

Enhance CustomerService and Reputation

PM initiatives supportevery converter’s mission toprovide customers withsuperior service. Many

customers are just asinterested in the reliability ofservices as the quality of theproduct they are receiving.Regularly scheduled upkeepenhances equipmentfunctionality and companiesthat practice it can offer theircustomers more reliableservice. Consumers seek outand stay loyal to companiesthat can provide them withquality products and reliableservice. Businesses whorealize this are the well-positioned for growth.

Plan for Future PartReplacements

When companies plan forequipment to be serviced atspecified periods of time, employees can recordequipment deterioration. Ifthere are issues, the parts ofthe press in question can thenbe replaced before they causea system failure. Understand-ing when a part needs to bereplaced enables betterforecasting expenses andminimizes the risk of surpriseexpenses in the future. When

it is time to replace a part, replacing with an OEMpart will guarantee the bestperformance out of yourmachine. This saves acompany a great deal ofmoney and hassle.

Final ThoughtsInvesting a small amount

of money and time intoregularly scheduled preven-tive maintenance onequipment now, can savethe company from massiveamounts of time and moneylost in the future.

To control color, you needto be able to compare verysmall differences, determinetheir impact, and under-stand how to address thatimpact. But words alonecan’t give us enoughinformation to preciselydescribe colors, or thedifference between them. Inthis three-part series we willlook at the color sciencebehind tolerancing – thecolor analysis that paved theway, the role of light, and thedifference between a colorspace and a color model – so you can make the besttolerancing decisions foryour business.

Munsell Color SystemAlbert Munsell was the

first to establish an objectivemodel of color communica-tion. In fact, his empiricalanalysis of color organiza-tion from the late 1800s isthe foundation of all moderncolor coordinate systems.

Munsell was a professorand an artist who noticedthe colors he painted undersunlight didn’t match thecolors he painted in the

evening under lamplight. Tohelp explain this phenom-enon, he worked out a three-dimensional numericalsystem. The Munsell ColorSystem, which we still usetoday, describes color usinghue, value, and chroma.

Hue determines the colorfamily. Munsell started withthe main hues – red, blue, and yellow – then mixedthem in various amounts toaccount for the subtle huedifferences as each colorblends together. He thenassigned numbers to eachone.

Munsell hand paintedchips and arranged them tocreate a 3D model of color. The hues are located aroundthe central axis. Valuemoves from light to darkdown the axis, while chromaincreases as it moves awayfrom the axis.

Munsell Notation H V / CHe also bound them in the

Munsell Book of Color as astructured, organized set ofcolors that (theoretically)contains all color possibili-

remains central to all colorcoordinate methods – lightblues and dark blues, lightgreens and dark greens, etc.To indicate the darkness orlightness of a color, Munsellassigned numbers rangingfrom 0-10 (10 is white and 0is black).

Chroma describes thestrength or saturation of acolor. A color with highchroma will appear pure andstrong. A color with lowchroma will be muddy andgray.

Value describes thecolor’s darkness or light-ness. While this terminologyis rarely used today, theconcept of lightness as aseparate attribute of color

something at the store, onlyto return home and realize itdoesn’t match anything inyour house? It’s not thecolor that changed. It’s theway you perceived it.

To control color, you need tobe able to compare very smalldifferences, determine theirimpact and understand how toaddress that impact. In thisthree-part series, we’re lookingat the key components oftolerancing. If you missed partone, The History of ColorAnalysis, check it out now.Today’s topic explains how lightaffects the color we see and theimportance of controlled lightingfor a successful tolerancingprogram.

Color is light and light isenergy

There are many differenttypes of light, and eachdistributes energy in adifferent fashion. Ourperception of color isstrongly affected by the typeof light that falls upon anobject. But it’s actually muchmore complex than that. Notall light is the same. Day-light, moonlight, fluorescent, flashlight – they all illumi-nate objects differently.

To establish a goodtolerancing program, youneed to understand the roleof light in color.

Here is 10YR Yellow RedFamily. When you comparethese two families, you cansee the purple family is“fatter” near the middle ofthe value scale. While this ispartially due to our ability tosee color, it is more isrelated to the availability ofreal, physical colorants.

Munsell’s color systemhas been widely acceptedand utilized. In fact, today’scolor measurement softwareand instrumentation usehue, value, and lightness tocalculate and compare the

In 1670, Sir Isaac Newtonperformed an experimentthat put the phenomenon ofcolor into words. He hung aprism in a dark room thenintroduced sunlight througha small slit. As the lightpassed through the triangu-lar piece of glass, heobserved that it refractedinto a series of colors uponthe wall: a rainbow. Theprism bent the individualcomponents of white light sothey could each becomevisible.

From this experiment,Newton theorized that whitelight is actually made up ofmany different types of light:red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. He wasright.

Light produces electro-magnetic energy with manydifferent wavelengths. At theshort end – 400 nanometers– light is violet. As thewavelength becomes longer,up toward 700 nanometers, the light passes from toblue, to green… yellow toorange and red. Newtonproved that white light isn’twhite at all. It’s actuallycomprised of all the differenttypes of light… Electromag-netic energy in intervalsbetween 400 and 700nanometers.

Light SourcesIn Newton’s day, the only

light sources were natural…sunlight, moonlight, star-light, or candlelight. Todaywe have a lot more choices.Incandescent, Fluorescent,LED… each generatesenergy at different placeswithin the visible spectrum, producing different colors oflight. The relative amount ofenergy at each wavelengthdiffers with each lightsource.

just how much the tempera-ture of light affects what wesee. This viewing booth isilluminating the same scenewith different light sources.

This is the electromag-netic energy of IlluminantD65… also known asdaylight. On the Kelvin scale, its temperature is 6500. Asyou can see, there’s verylittle violet energy on the leftside of the spectrum.Daylight peaks in the blueportion, then continues todecline down to 700nanometers, where there’svery little red energy. Butdaylight changes. D65describes noon daylight, where the sun is hidingbehind a building, andeverything appears bluerbecause the blue canopy ofthe sky is providing illumina-

This is illuminant A, whichwe know as incandescent. Atungsten lamp burns atabout 2800 Kelvin. It hasvery little energy in the violetor blue wavelengths, but theenergy continues to increaseat almost a constant slopeto 700 nanometers, which isan abundance of red. Whileobjects that are illuminatedby daylight appear bluish, they’ll shift toward red underincandescent lighting.

descent light ramps up thered. The middle image istaken under fluorescentlighting, weak in blue ANDred with a predominance ingreen. The daylight in thelast image produces blueenergy, which causes theobjects to take on a bluishshade.

As an object interacts withlight, it can only reflect thelight that exists. Objectsdon’t create light; they

reflect the light that comesfrom the source. So as thesource changes, so does thereflection (and color) we seefrom the object.

Critical Takeaways forTolerancing· When comparing colors,

you must be aware of(and in control of) yourlight source.

· Typically, most industriesspecify the standard lightunder which materialsshould be viewed. Besure you ask which lightsource to use, or use thestandard lighting for yourindustry if you’re notsure.

· To measure and evaluatecolor under the sameilluminant, you mustselect the same illumi-nant in your spectropho-tometer, tolerancingsoftware, and light boothfor consistency.

· Communicate with yoursuppliers and customersto ensure they arefollowing the samelighting procedures.

New air-cooled LED curing unit from ITLIntegration Technology,

also known as iTL, hasannounced a new air-cooledLED unit, VZX, whichproduces 22W/cm² doseof UV output and promisesthe sort of performancenormally only possible withwater-cooled systems.

The VZX unit is a variant ofthe existing VZ series ofcompact high output UVlamps for the inkjet market. Itis designed for use with highspeed single pass applica-tions in inkjet, flexo and webprinting. It uses ITL’s XT8module, a hybrid semiconduc-tor technology that promiseshigh-performing thermalproperties and increases UVoutput by 30 percent more

than traditional LED options, and without needing addi-tional driver current. It shouldbe good for a very longservice life of over 50,000hours and comes with a fiveyear warranty.

It works with iTL’s VARIcoolair cooling system that can

handle working environ-ments up to 45°C. It’s aclosed loop electronicsystem that automaticallyadjusts the cooling toindividual segments withinthe total length of the LEDarray depending upon boththe ambient temperatureand working duty cycle. Thisavoids start up spikes andprovides more consistentoutput. It’s also said to bemuch quieter than compet-ing products.

Integration Technology isitself a subsidiary of theGerman IST Metz Group, which produces variouscuring solutions, with iTLconcentrating mainly on LEDcuring for digital printing.
