CONTACT DOWNTOWN KINGSTON! NEWSLETTER - WINTER 2016 BIG DIG 3 The downtown reconstruction project known as Big Dig 3 is underway. The streets within the construction zone are as follows: Princess St. from Bagot to Clergy, Montreal St. from Brock to Queen, Sydenham St. from Princess to Queen, Clergy St. from Princess to Queen. The majority of work on Princess St. will be completed by July 1, 2016 allowing for a soft opening of the street to vehicular traffic on that date. However, Princess St. will need to be closed for short periods of time after July 1 (both fully and with partial lane restrictions) in order to accommodate continued work (paving, crosswalks, etc.). Work will continue on the side streets until December 2016. For more information please contact the Downtown Kingston! office at [email protected] or visit www.downtownkingston.ca/business-and-development/ construction For questions and concerns about the logistics and schedule for the 2016 construction project, please contact Aimee Austin, Communications Officer at Len Corcoran Excavating, [email protected] or 613-542-0820. HOLIDAY WRAP 2015 We’ve wrapped up another holiday season! We kicked it off with a mild-weathered Santa Parade which brought the holiday spirit to Downtown Kingston! While in town, the jolly man in red left behind four cheeky little elves that had a great time visiting downtown Kingston businesses throughout December. They awarded one very good person with a sleigh full of gift cards on Christmas Eve. Santa returned to Kingston to do some shopping during Shop After Dark which launched the holiday shopping season. He also visited with good boys and girls every Saturday in December in Springer Market Square – and mom and dad were happy because they were able to park for free in municipal lots! Kingston’s festive windows were once again put on display for the Window Wonderland competition with more than 1,600 votes cast for the People’s Choice window! Pewter Collectibles were wildly popular yet again this year! The tradition continued with another five ornaments released – Cooke’s Fine Foods & Coffee, Ban Righ Hall, Hotel Belvedere, Robert Meek Public School and LaSalle Causeway. A big thanks to this season’s sales outlets. DK! NEWS FLASH EMAIL LIST We send a weekly email News Flash to our member businesses. HERITAGE WEEK AWARDS This year marks the 27th year of the annual Heritage Week Awards Feb 15-21, a partnership between the Frontenac Heritage Foundation and Downtown Kingston! Nominations for the Heritage Awards honouring the “best historically sensitive renovations or development of commercial property” in the downtown core are now being accepted. These awards recognize the efforts of downtown property and business owners who have invested in both our heritage and our future over the past year by restoring, rebuilding and maintaining the beautiful building facades that make Kingston famous!

Last year, our award recipients were 172 Ontario St. (Lovebird Bridal, The Dessert Indulgence, Shoalts and Zaback Architects, BPE Developments) 268 Princess St. (Fuel, The Vekios Family), 251 Ontario St. (The Lone Star, MMMGroup, The City of Kingston). Get your nominations in now for your favourite heritage renovations from the past year by sending them to [email protected]

REMINDER: SNOW AND ICELet’s work together to keep our sidewalks clear of snow and ice this season! Just a friendly reminder to business owners to keep sidewalks clear and safe and to remove any overhanging icicles from buildings. Please ensure the sidewalks in front of your business are shoveled and that sand or salt is used to prevent them from becoming slippery. Sand and salt products are a huge help with slippery sidewalks and are relatively inexpensive - they can be purchased from a number of downtown businesses.

For vacant buildings, it is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure safe passage for pedestrians. Bylaw enforcement officers will be on the street enforcing these bylaws. Business owners who do not comply may face a fine of up to $5,000.
