Secondary Alcohol Ethoxylates

TERGITOL™ 15-S Series SurfactantsTERGITOL TMN Series Surfactants

TERGITOL 15-S-Series and TERGITOL TMN Series Surfactants offer a distinct combination of excellent emulsifying, dispersing, stabilizing and wetting property profiles. These secondary alcohol ethoxylate (SAE) surfactants feature narrow aqueous gel ranges, rapid dissolution even in cold water, fast foam collapse rates, wide range of solvent compatibility and solubility, and favorable handling and formulating properties, making them an excellent choice for many paints and coatings.

The SAE fast aqueous dissolution properties of the water soluble surfactants (7-40 EO) result in even the low mole ethoxylate (3-5 EO) surfactants, which are oil soluble, being readily water dispersible. This allows the use of the low mole SAE to enhance the coalescing of emulsion polymers for low VOC (volatile organic compounds) systems, while also offering pigment wetting and stabilization, and substrate wetting and rewetting.

TERGITOL 15-S-Series and TERGITOL TMN Series Surfactants are widely regarded as highly effective nonionic wetting agents having low aqueous dynamic and equilibrium surface tension profiles. These SAE surfactants may offer the necessary substrate wetting and rewetting properties often provided by anionic surfactants, but with lower foam profiles and with less water sensitivity compared to anionics.

Low Foam Surfactants

TRITON™ DF SurfactantsTRITON CF-10 (90%) SurfactantTRITON CF-10 SurfactantECOSURF™ LF Surfactants1

ECOSURF LF, TRITON DF, TRITON CF-10 and TRITON CF-10 (90%) Surfactants feature low foam and outstanding wetting and dispersing properties. These low foam surfac-tants are widely used for pigment stabilization in a range of coating formulations, including architectural, industrial, maintenance and automotive paints.

Specialty Alkoxylate Surfactants

ECOSURF™ SA SurfactantsECOSURF EH Surfactants

ECOSURF™ SA and ECOSURF EH Surfactants offer a combination of dispersing and wetting properties with excellent handling performance.

ECOSURF SA and ECOSURF EH Surfactants have ex-cellent wetting properties, with low equilibrium surface tension and rapid dynamic surface tension reduction. These surfactants feature no aqueous gelling, rapid dissolution even in cold water, fast foam collapse and favorable formulating and handling properties, making them an excellent choice for many paint, coating and ink systems. They are especially suited to pigment wetting and stabilization.

Octylphenol Ethoxylate Surfactants

TRITON™ X Series Surfactants

TRITON X Series Surfactants are versatile nonionic specialty surfactants that offer excellent emulsification performance. They are recognized as an industry standard OPE for pigment wetting and stabilization in coatings and are offered in a range of HLB to match specific wetting and dispersing requirements and waterborne coating stabilization requirements.

1 All components of this product are on the TSCA Inventory or are exempt from TSCA Inventory requirements under 40 CFR 720.30. This product contains a substance that will be subject to a TSCA Section 5(a)(2) Significant New Use Rule (SNUR) and export notification under TSCA 12(b). Architectural coating formulation processes that operate under zero-discharge of wastewater should not trigger the SNUR conditions but each user should assess their operations to assure compliance. The SNUR will limit release to water to no greater than 14 ppb as calculated after wastewater treatment. The total removal during wastewater treatment is estimated to be > 90% based on Episuite models and demonstrated ready biodegradability. In addition, EPA does not expect significant adverse environmental effects during the uses stated in the PMN submission. These uses included formulation at less than 1% in industrial, commercial and consumer architectural coatings. TSCA 12(b) export notification is not needed when this substance is present in mixtures at less than 1%.

• SAE have a very narrow gel range, giving them a very favorable advantage in aqueous formulations.

• PAE and NPE have broader gel ranges.

• SAE require a much shorter dissolution time.

• Broader gel range is partly due to the lower hydrophobicity.

• All families have a very similar initial form.

• SAE have the advantage of a much less stable foam.

• PAE, being the least hydrophobic, have a slower bubble film drainage.

The ECOSURF™ SA Surfactants, based on seed oil hydrophobes, show no loss in performance compared toconventional nonionic surfactants used in paints and coatings. In fact, they have a positive impact on minimum filmformation temperature. At the same time, they reduce costs through faster dissolution and reduced cycle times.Since they are based on seed oil alcohols and create low VOC emissions, ECOSURF SA Surfactants can help improve the environmental profile of paint systems.

ECOSURF SA Surfactants were compared to a conventional nonionic surfactant in a gloss, semigloss and aflat formulated paint.
