Welcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our home venue for what promises to be quite a season in
the history of Dorking FC, both and off the field.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of Chessington and Hook United. May you all have a very prosperous new year (but hopefully not too prosperous today!).
We have plenty to look forward to in 2017, it’s going to be quite a momentous time in the 137 year history of the Chicks, when we finally get back to our own, traditional home ground with a secure long term future.
But before I look a head, I’d just like to take the opportunity to look back at 2016, which has also been a very eventful twelve months.
We started the year with the future of the club in jeopardy. After two years of ground sharing at Horley, while awaiting the rebuilding of Meadowbank, the news that the redevelopment would be delayed by a year left the club on the brink. With no means of generating significant revenue while playing so far away, and having already stretched one year’s ground sharing budget across a second season, the future looked bleak.
So, in January, we launched the Save Dorking FC campaign. This public fundraising appeal saw a large amount of local support and a clear desire to keep our great, historical club going. Following conversations with Dorking Wanderers, we formed the Dorking Football Development Alliance which not only sees our two clubs working together to boost all grassroots football in the town, but set up an arrangement for us to share facilities here at Westhumble, and then on to the new Meadowbank.
Meanwhile, on the pitch, we enjoyed a run to the Southern Combination Cup Final at the end of last season, including a memorable 3-0 semi-final win at Westhumble – our first game back in Dorking for nearly three seasons, in front of a bumper crowd.
DORKING FC - BACK IN TOWN
a welcome from the chairman
ALAN GOUT
04
We made a managerial change in the summer, welcoming the highly rated young coach Danny Fox, along with his assistants Chris Wye and Greg Fidele, as we looked to take advantage of our return to playing home games in the town by pushing on with our long term aim of offering real development to local and youthful players and moving towards creating a team that represents the local community.
That led to a complete rebuilding of the squad by Danny over the summer. As was to be expected in this transitional season when we’re placing an emphasis on the long term, there have been both good and bad results – but, most importantly, we’ve seen a number of local lads take their opportunities to break through from the youth squad and establish themselves as first team regulars, with enormous potential for our future. The connection the town feels to Dorking FC when it sees its own players on the pitch has been immediately obvious – with us now welcoming home crowds regularly among the very best in the division.
Meanwhile, we took over the running of Dorking’s Under 18s on behalf of the new Alliance, which has seen some of the town’s best emerging talent playing in the Ryman Youth League wearing our Cockerel Colours for the very first time. Thanks to the dedicated coaching of Steve Lunn, Nick Torpey and Simon Coffey, the lads have more than held their own against teams from some of Surrey’s elite academies.
In their last game before the Christmas break, a terrific performance in the Ryman Youth League saw our team of lads from the town visit Woking FC Academy, with its olayers drawn from throughout South London, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire, and come back from two goals down to earn a highly creditable 3-3- draw. The team enters the new year sitting third in the table, ahead of not just Woking, but also Sutton United, Tooting and
Mitcham and Leatherhead.
Tthere’s been excellent growth in the Ladies team too. Under up-and-coming coach Matt Dilger, assisted by the highly experienced Ben Smythe, the Ladies have gone from perennial strugglers to a well-organised and competitive squad combining talented local teenagers with some more experienced players coming in from nearby clubs such as Crawley Wasps, Carshalton and Chelsea academy.
Finally, towards the end of 2016, we saw the sight we had all been waiting for – the rebuilding of our ancestral home ground at Meadowbank. At last, the new stadium has begun to rise in the town centre and in the next couple of months we should start seeing our clubhouse appear before our eyes.
It means this new year promises to be even more memorable as the last one. We’ll be moving in to the ground for next season – which will be both an exciting prospect and a great deal of work, from setting up and running the clubhouse as a successful venture, to working with our colleagues from Dorking Wanderers and the local youth clubs to ensure the stadium is a vibrant, well-used new football facility that everyone in Dorking will flock to and be proud of.
We hope as many of you as possible will want to join us on this fantastic journey.
But, in the meantime, enjoy the game today, and I hope to welcome you back here at Westhumble – and then tat Meadowbank – during 2017.
Kind Regards
Alan GoutChairman, Dorking FC

Good morning and welcome to Westhumble for our bank holiday fixture against
Chessington and Hook United. I’d like to welcome Darren Woods, his management team, the players and officials of our opponents for what I’m sure - if it’s anything like our away game - will be a battling encounter.
I hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year. Owing to print deadlines over the holiday, I am writing this before our Boxing Day fixture at Cove - so I hope that we’re going into this game off the back of a well earned three points. I also hope that Father Christmas brings us more consistency this year with a shorter injury list.
It was good to see Will Conroy back in the side against Redhill after a couple of weeks out with injury and we are looking forward to seeing him build on the exceptionally promising form that he’s displayed already, since stepping up from our youth squad.
Dennis Ongei has been missed since tearing his calf against Frimley Green, in only his second game since joining the club, and we may have to wait a little longer for his return. Brandon Watts has been battling knee injuries and chest infections for the past six weeks, while Tom Day had to withdraw from the starting line-up against Redhill on the day of the game, due to the recurring shoulder problem he has had.

WHAT DOES THE FOX SAY?
FIRST TEAM MANAGER
If we can get a more settled side in 2017, then I believe we will see the potential of the squad start to blossom.
With absences come new players and I thought Charlie McTigue’s debut in goal against Redhill was excellent. Cal Botterill was also a welcome addition to the side and I am sure we will see more from him as the season continues.
I hope you enjoy the game and thank you in advance for your support during this coming year.
Up the Chicks.
Danny

DFC PLAYER PROFILE
DARRELLMOTHEE
Despite starting in August as a defender, when Darrell Mothee looks back over the season, it’s
likely to be attacking memories that shine brightly.
Beginning with his ambitious long-range strike that floated into the net from an acute angle to secure the first win of the new campaign, against Worcester Park, Darrell’s left foot deliveries, whether from open play or set pieces, often create an air of expectation amongst the watching supporters and have lead to several highlights.
More recently, Darrell’s found himself high in the opposition half far more regularly, as he’s taken up a left midfield role.
“I’m happy to play anywhere,” he says. “My personal aim for this season has always been to just keep working hard and stay in the squad.”
Another of the locally-based players recruited to Danny Fox’s squad revamp in the summer, Darrell had put his football on the back burner before coming along to watch one of the early pre-season games.
“After a bit of a break, I’d wanted to go back to playing regularly at a good level,” he says, “And I could see that
Dorking FC was changing to promote local players, so I spoke to the manager and joined in pre-season training to get fit again.”
The matches have followed swiftly in the first half of the season, with fifteen first team starts and three goals so far, but Darrell says he still looks forward to the training sessions too.
“I really enjoy the training here,” he admits. “I like the organisation behind it all, working on specific parts of our game - it’s very focused, with everyone working for each other.”
And that’s another thing Leeds United supporter (“Blame my Dad!”) Darrell is enthusiastic about - the team spirit in club this year. Even when things haven’t always gone as well as might have been hoped on the pitch.
He says, “There’s a great togetherness - and that’s what it’s all about for this season really.”
“It’s a building year, getting the foundations of the team in place so we can really look forward to next year when we move back home to Meadowbank.”

Redhill came to Westhumble on the back of eight straight wins, and duly made it nine by
the end of this derby game, but Dorking will take encouragement from the manner in which they competed for the full ninety minutes with their high flying opponents.
The Chicks’ season won’t stand or fall on results against a side that has assembled some of the best talent in the league and elsewhere, including former academy scholars, aiming to bounce back to the Premier Division at the first attempt. But manager Danny Fox, who is looking to develop a team around local players over time, will have been pleased by the performance of his three debutants, brought in to add experience to the side and help his nucleus of young players push on to the next level, building a platform for success in seasons to come when the club has returned home to Meadowbank.
With Richard Webber back in the starting line up and anchoring the midfield, Ross Defoe - a new arrival on dual-registration terms with Corinthian Casuals - provided a physical presence in the middle of the pitch. The Chicks took the game to their promotion-chasing opponents in the opening minutes and carved out an early chance as James Herouvin cut inside from the right wing and struck a low shot that rebounded off the post.
Slowly, Redhill got into gear with their attractive quick passing game, looking dangerous as they took full advantage of the still-excellent playing surface at Westhumble. But with Webber breaking up play in midfield before launching counter-attacking moves, and full backs Owen Hunte and Jack Wisbey in impressive form, the visitors found Dorking’s defence resolute. On the first occasion Redhill were afforded a shot on target, 21 year-old keeper Charlie McTigue, on his debut, made a flying fingertip save to push the ball safely over the bar.
It took until 34 minutes for the Lobsters to get behind the Dorking back four and break the deadlock. A diagonal ball from deep in the Redhill half found Tony Halsey who
got to the goal line and cut back for Kieran Campbell to side foot into the net from the middle of the penalty area.
The goal took the wind out of the Chicks’ sails, as Campbell had three further chances in the next few minutes, but Dorking recovered their composure to ensure they were still in the game at half time.
At the start of the second half, Dorking looked competitive once again. Some excellent link up play down the left between Richard Webber and new signing Cal Botterill opened up the Redhill defence, but Botterill’s cut back from the dead ball line was just toe-poked away.
With the Chicks growing in confidence, there was an element of misfortune to Redhill’s second goal on 71 minutes, as a ball driven across the box was diverted into his own net by the unlucky Owen Hunte, who had no choice but to get a touch on the ball under pressure from Redhill forward Chris Ransome.
Although the game was now beyond the Chicks, there was still time for some final heroics as Charlie McTigue was, perhaps a little harshly, adjudged to have brought down Kerry Kedze for a penalty. But the commanding keeper made amends with a superb stop from the resulting spot kick, diving low to his right to push the ball around the post.

THE HISTORY OFDORKING FC
Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830s. The first matches took place in the street.
An annual game was staged every Shrove Tuesday in the High Street, preceded by a procession led by a band as well as men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross.
On the left of the cross was a red, white and blue football, on the top a gold ball and on the right a red and green football representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking FC - the same colours we wear proudly today. The Shrove Tuesday game tradition continued until 1905 when it became outlawed - although the club is now looking at ways to reintroduce the historic community event.
Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club’s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as ‘The Chicks’.
The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, where the bells of St Martin’s can be heard peeling during the games. The new stadium was the pride of the town with a capacity of 5000, including a
stand accommodating 700, opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous.
In 1974 we joined forces with Guildford City to become Guildford & Dorking United FC for an ill-fated three year period, before being reconstituted as Dorking Town FC, before reverting to the traditional named of Dorking FC in 1981.
On the pitch, our record over the years reflects the traditional highs and lows of non-league football, including many notable achievements as well as the occasional despair. In 1955 we became the first Surrey club to defeat a professional team when we beat Folkestone 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup in front of a record crowd of over 4000 spectators.
The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In 1992-3 we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion.
We continued to play at Meadowbank until 2013 when the ground was closed by the local authority

on health and safety grounds. A lack of investment and years of decay came home to roost and the club, now playing in the Combined Counties League Division One, was forced to leave the town and ground share in Horley.
The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent.
An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council
for the ground at Meadowbank to be re-developed and Dorking FC have returned to playing in the town this year - initially at Westhumble Playing Fields before finally going home to the new Meadowbank for the 2017-2018 season.
Our new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking FC will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey.

OPPOSITION HISTORY
CHESSINGTON & HOOK UTD
Chessington and Hook United Sports and Social Club have evolved from the original
Chessington F.C., which was formed in 1921. A series of mergers over the years culminated with the coming together of Chessington United Football Club and Hook Youth/United in 1986.
This amalgamation brought together the Intermediate section of Chessington United based at Chalky Lane and the thriving Youth and junior sections of Hook Youth/United, which had been formed in 1986 and based at Lovelace Playing Fields.
The Clubs activities were to be centred on the facilities at Chalky Lane, which had been the home of Chessington United since the mid-sixties. They had taken out a lease on what was known as St Marys Recreation Ground, although at the time it was just an open space. Over the years the ground has been developed, almost entirely by voluntary effort, into the facility it is today.
Recently the Club has regained Senior status, with the Senior team playing in the F.A Cup and F.A.Vase. The strong Youth set up provides the opportunity for those aged between 5 and 18 to benefit from properly structured football.
In recent years the Club has been able to sponsor both Girls and Ladies football and has provided facilities for Archery and Ladies Netball.
The Club prides itself on the fact that it is maintained on a purely voluntary basis. All
the Committee members, trainers, managers, ground staff and adult helpers give of their own time. Likewise the players receive no payment whatsoever from the Club. All players, from Youth to Seniors are required to pay a membership fee.
The aim of the Club over the years has always been to promote soccer through Youth with progression to Junior, Intermediate and Senior level as appropriate to the highest standard. Also, to foster and encourage other sporting activities for the local community consistent with the facilities available at the Club.
Since the establishment of Hook Youth in 1976 there has been a steady growth in the number of local youths who have become members of the Club. In the last few years there have been as many as 19 teams involving up to over 250 youngsters. The structure of the Club allows boys reaching the age of 18, or in some circumstances earlier, to have the opportunity to progress into the adult section of the Club.
