Back in 1957, Otto Behrend established one of Erie’s most treasured spaces by bequeathing to the Millcreek Township School District his beloved 100-acre Asbury farm. The School District

turned his cottage into the Asbury Woods Nature Center and used the land to educate students about the natural world. Thanks to him, and the foresight of the school district, Asbury Woods has become a vital and vibrant part of the Erie community as a recreational gem that also enjoys a reputation as one of the premier environmental education centers in the tristate region.

Asbury Woods’ mission is based on the simple principal that people will protect what they know, love, and understand. That’s why the Asbury Woods Partnership is committed to providing all members of the community with meaningful environmental education and recreational experiences that inspire a greater sense of awareness, sustainability and stewardship. In support of this mission, we have made major investments and commitments of resources to improve the trails and facilities of Asbury Woods to ensure the preservation of the vast richness of this landscape.

Community financial support is essential to the sustainability and evolution of the Asbury Woods Partnership and its continually expanding role in the stewardship of this valuable green space. Thanks to your support we’ve been able to expand our curriculum to more school districts while creating new and innovative programs like our partnership with Erie City Mission to develop an environmental track to the Urban University program. In addition, the events that have prospered under the Partnership have become family traditions, adding to the richness of life here while becoming part of the fabric of our community.

Asbury Woods is at an exciting time in its history and is poised for growth. This past year was critically important to preserving the legacy of Otto Behrend as we made a crucial step in ensuring our future by entering an agreement to purchase Asbury Woods from the Millcreek Township School District. This success ensures that we will continue to provide environmental education and recreation opportunities for students and the community in perpetuity. Thank you for being a part of this journey and for supporting this unique and beloved community asset that makes Millcreek and the greater Erie community such a special place to live.
