ASBURY PARK ZEST SUMMER

7

Asbury Park has been growing leaps and bounds this entire last year. Take a drive

around the city and see for yourself. You won't recognize it. Old abandoned buildings and empty lots are flourishing now with new construction. A fantastic new downtown performance center, House of Independents, is drawing record crowds to Cookman Ave. Expect a waiting line on the sidewalk on the weekends or at special events.

The surrounding restaurants, bars, coffee shops, interior design showrooms (B&G Home Interiors/downstairs in the Arcade), a gelato bistro and art galleries are full again with window shoppers, gift shoppers, serious shoppers and destination diners. The staple rock 'n' roll/tattoo/surfing crowd is now mixed with fashion plates thanks to Nita Ideas, Creative Clothing for Individuals, HEAVEN and Foolish Ginger. All three boutiques and others are on Cookman Ave.

Antique Emporium continues to hold court on Cookman Ave and is the perfect shopping mecca for vintage and mid-century modern buys of furniture, clothing, books, albums, and art work. For the rare celebrity poster or to decorate a Film/TV set, personal shoppers and production companies come from far and wide to find what they need here. And (excluding Thursday's & weekends), meet Rudy Valentino, general man-ager, with a movie~star name for a reason.

Speaking of stars, Kimmee Masi, bakery owner & head baker, Confections of a Rockstar, has a new internet Reality TV Show. Tune in to see how Kimmee and a celebrity guest host whip up their favorite dessert while sharpening their skills for prime time TV. Shelter Home has some of the most unique and popular gift items and home accessories in Asbury Park. They have two loca-tions. One on Cookman Ave and one in Conven-tion Hall's Grand Arcade. Stop in & meet Gene & Scott -- sweetheart gents and cool dudes.

The ocean will always get the crowds in the summer and what better place to drink, dine and dance than at the city's sophisticated, Water-mark, on the Asbury Park Boardwalk ... Hand-

some host and owner, Russell Lewis, is the tal-ented DJ behind the turntable on the weekends. It's also an ideal place to have your wedding.

But the real focus of this issue is on Main Street. Downtown, midtown and uptown Main Street is growing every month with new shops, services and sensations. A chocolatier is now on the block, and believe it or not, I just bought my new Hot Pink swimsuit at Main Street Grocery. AP Bagels is a MUST to enjoy a coffee break and breakfast. They are open all day for snacks and meals. Dark City Brewery is the hottest new wa-tering hole in town, with an array of beers served on a wood tray in individual tasting glasses. Enjoy this experience while admiring their new, cool, wall mural and/or watching the passersby. Johnny Mac House of Spirits on the downtown side of Main Street keeps NJ Transit busy with cars and cars full of millennials descending here for a night of Skeeball, Basketball, Ping Pong, Hula Hoop, Simon Says indoors or outdoor fun in their new Main Street Beer Garden.

Dino's on Main is the city's prime real estate for eateries. Taking up a full corner, this establish-ment on Main Street, right across from City Hall, boasts indoor/outdoor bistro dining, LATE NIGHT, take-out, delivery, made-to-order pastas for the gourmet, salmon, pork, beef, fish, broccoli rabe, rice balls, meatballs, and THE BEST LASAGNA ON THE PLANET. An air conditioned interior makes it super enjoyable to check out their food cases or see what else is on the menu that day. Homemade bread and mozzerella daily. Soft drinks, snacks, a marketplace of Italian special-ties and provisions, frozen ravioli, prepared sauc-es and soups, alongside Dino's specialty cakes and famous desserts, round out their offerings, giving the City By The Sea residents and visitors something serious to write home about.

RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT

J aime Hoyos, General Manager of La Tapatia, immigrated from Colombia in 1988 and

shortly thereafter began studying English as a Second Language at Monmouth University. As well as Spanish and English, he also speaks Portuguese and Italian.

Hoyos has been in the restaurant business for 28 years. As La Tapatia’s GM for the past 14, he currently oversees about 50 employees. Still, his humble beginnings as a dishwasher at the Appleton Inn in Tinton Falls helped him evolve and in 1998, he opened Manhattan Steakhouse in Oakhurst, which he maintained for 10 years. At the age of 42 in 2006, he became the first Latino man and the youngest person to be given the Golden Plate Award by the NJ Restaurant Association. In 2010, he served one term as President of the association.

“We also had another location in Fort Lee, which was great until Sept. 11,” says Hoyos, who lives in Tinton Falls with his wife Claudia, and their four canine children---Fred, Luca, Juancho, and

Juanita. “I miss having a restaurant. Having a small location and building up a business is my dream and my goal. But I enjoy working for the Garcia family. They treat me very well. Mr. Garcia has had every position in the business and has built an empire. I have a lot of respect for him.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

C indy isn't one of those artists who keeps to herself. The owner of Timeless Creations,

Parisi is a self-taught artist gifted in decora-tive painting & interior design. Her MO? - to spread this love with the joy of painting.

After becoming a finalist on HGTV's Design Star, her passion for the art grew stronger and led to a career in turning ordinary rooms into extraor-dinary spaces through paint, painting and a creative eye. But aside from mural design, execution, color consulting and interior design - her specialties, she also maintains an art studio in Point Pleasant where she welcomes children and adults alike to learn self~es-teem and confidence building through art.

Parisi invites people of all ages and back-grounds to enjoy themed art parties that she hosts. For instance, art-based birthday parties are a hit with kids. Chianti's Canvas, her party division's name, is the part of Parisi's gig that offers artistic opportunities for bachlorette par-ties, fund- raisers, corporate events, weddings and/or baby showers or any excuse for a Girls Night Out With Painting, which is becoming

the best new fad in women's gatherings.

Parisi calls Chianti's Canvas, "a unique gathering of friends, old and new, where you come to find the artist within through acrylics and an open mind." Any skill level is not an issue. "Whether you have never picked up a brush before, or haven't paint-ed in years, our step-by-step instruction will help you not only complete the job, but complete it with confidence," she promises.

The thing I enjoy most about what I do is building relationships with all of my clients," says Parisi. "A word-of-mouth business built around the friends I've made while work-ing is my marketing plan," she shares.

And continues ... "My hopes, dreams and next steps are to be the host of my own TV show based around changing people's lives by bringing sunshine into their homes with an outrageous, one of a kind design con-cept." Her Asbury Park tie-in? "Well if Holly-wood doesn't pick up my TV show, as Dorothy would say, "There's no place like home ..."

What's your favorite kind of art to make? The kind that makes money. Web and print

design.

What are you most known for?I am known for creating websites for comedians. I have been a web designer since 1997 and have worked for other agencies where I designed for American Express, FOX, ABC, Advance Internet and Lenox Collections... to name a few.

In 2005, I started to work for myself at Gigglechick-Interactive.com - with 6 years performing stand up in NYC combined with my experience designing sites, comedians began to realize that they needed their faces out there on the internet.

Jim Gaffigan hired me to create his website right before his special "Beyond The Pale" premiered and I worked with him for the next 4 years. That's when the word of mouth started. Steven Wright,

Tom Papa, and Dave Attell hired me within the first 6 months of launching Gaffigan's site. The three of them are still my clients today - 10 years later.

Other comedians that are past and present clients include:Whitney Cummings (Co-Creator of "Two Broke Girls" & her hour special "I'm Your Girlfriend" on HBO)David Alan Grier ("In Living Color", NBC's "The Wiz")Ron Funches (NBC's Undateable)Maria Bamford (creator of Lady Dynamite on Netflix)Chris Hardwick and Hard N' Phirm ( @midnight, Talking Dead)Adam Lowitt (The Daily Show)Norm MacDonald (Saturday Night Live, The Norm Show)Tommy Johnagin (Late Show with David Letterman)Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Goldbergs)Alonzo Bodden (NBC's Last Comic Standing)Gary Vider (America's Got Talent finalist)

What's the most challenging work you've ever had to do?Being my mother's caregiver for 10 years... so moving pixels around and figuring out code, while stressful, is not something I am going to get an ulcer over (I've come close though. Haha.)

What are you most proud of right now? Or cur-rently promoting?Currently, I've been working on an offline super-se-cret project with Dave Attell for the past year and a half. You will hear about it soon. But check out the above gigantic list of clients. I am most proud of the fact that I haven't had to advertise - it has all been word of mouth.

What about your background do you especially want people to know?Well, I grew up here on the shore, lived in Manasquan, went to Wall High School (My art teacher, Mychelle Kendrick, really helped guide me down my path.) My goal in life at that point - and sometimes, presently - is to illustrate children's books. I went to The University of the Arts (which sounds fake) in Philadelphia where I graduated with a B.S. in Industrial Design.

Prior to designing websites, I was the Accessories & Hardware Designer for Nine West. I moved up to Jersey City in 1997 and 2 weeks after that, Nine West let me go. So, I saw an advert in the NYTimes and talked my way into a gig as a web designer at Fusion Design - sure, I lied. This was back when you *could* talk your way into places and teach yourself HTML within a week by looking at source codes and winging it.

What sets you apart from other artists?I rarely sleep.... oh... you said sets me "apart from other artists"... I'm not altogether sure that I am much different than "other artists". I have my niche in the comedy scene and people have known me as "Gigglechick" since 1999 when I began my blog and started a free NYC open mic listing site just so comics could find out where they could work out their craft.

What is your Asbury Park tie in?As far as any Asbury Park ties, basically I just drink and eat at various spots, walk around taking photos, went to the WNEW concerts when I was a teen, and take my Jack Russell, Gigglepup, to Yappy Hour at Wonder Bar.

T his is the year of repurposing and reinvention for musician, author, artist, and

humanitarian, Joe Harvard. Lately, he flies solo, playing guitar, “foot drums,” and electronic elements under the name “One Banned Man.” He recently released an LP called Hudgemabudge.

Although he loves playing as a member of the bands Dub Proof, Velveeta and Keith Monacchio, he says, “…playing alone and sounding like a band is an adventure, every time.”

A resident of Asbury Park for about two decades, Harvard (his nickname), whose real name is Joseph Alia Incagnoli, Jr., is the author of the 11th book of the music series edited by David Barker, Thirty-Three and a Third. His book about famous LP records was titled, The Velvet Underground and Nico (Bloomsbury Academic, 2004).

Yet, what makes him most proud is giving back to the community using music in a fashion that’s less self-involved.

“I became involved at the Ballard when Mallory Massara and I began volunteering at the Community Breakfast in 2013,” he says. “We organized the Media Center @ Ballard from an empty room into the musical fun factory for youngsters it is today. It only takes one person telling you that what you give freely has had a real and positive influence in their child's life to make the work seem worthwhile.”

As his position as Director of the Media Center

@ Ballard is strictly volunteer, he hopes to get a few more volunteers involved. Group and individual classes begin at 10:15 on Saturdays after the free Community Breakfast, with students ranging from 4 to 17 years old. “We learn, listen, and best of all we jam together,” he says. “The feeling that you are no longer singing about changing the world but actually doing it is unavoidable and immensely satisfying.”

In 2008, he founded Cranial Mass Productions in Asbury Park and in 2009, won three Asbury Music Awards and another in 2010 for Top Multi-Instrumentalist and Top Avant-Garde act.

His other LP, Country Eastern is what he calls “a meld of garage, alt-country and middle eastern sounds. He even creates his own cover art.

“It's always been apparent to me that music and art, when properly combined, can enervate one another,” says Harvard, raised in Jeffries Point, East Boston and studied Archaeological Anthropology at Harvard University in the early ‘80s before blossoming into a musician, producer-engineer, promoter and indie pioneer.“The art I'm making now is a lot like my recorded music: layered, developed over time, a bit added or subtracted, listened to or looked at innumerable times to create a distance of familiarity, which is as close to objectivity as I can get with my own work. Both my art and music are more improvisational. Sometimes I don't start with a theme, I find it.”

W e all hope for a summer full of bright, sunny weekends but, let’s face it, it’s practically inevita-ble that there will be at least one lousy weekend weather day over the next few months. So,

you’re at home, it’s raining, and you’ve binge-watched all your favorite TV shows. What to do? Might I suggest a classic movie? There are many options for watching movies for free or for just a few dollars: TCM, streaming services, and Youtube are just a few. And classic doesn’t necessarily mean staid or out-of-date. Here is a short list of "vintage" movies that pack a little summer heat.

Film Editor’s Summer Classic Movie Tipsby Jeff Lundenberger

CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD

Some Like it Hot (1959)This film is number one on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 Funniest American Come-dies of All Time. The first sight of Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis walking in high heels cracks me up every time I watch it. It also features a breathtaking Marilyn Monroe in several skin-tight dresses that conceal very little of her voluptuous body. What’s not to like?

In the Good Old Summertime (1949)If you've seen “You’ve Got Mail” you've seen an updated version of this story. Judy Garland and Van Johnson play a pair of music store workers in turn of the century Chicago who seem to love tormenting each other, and we can all guess how that will turn out. It’s as prim and proper as any 1949 Hollywood movie, but the final scene is intimate and carries a lot of heat. Garland is, as always, difficult not to watch.

Summertime (1955)Katharine Hepburn was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance as an Ohio school teacher on her dream trip to Venice in this charming romance. Hepburn’s characters are often self-assured and prickly, but here those qualities are tempered with vulnerability and loneliness. She meets and falls in love with a married antique dealer played by Italian actor Rossana Brazzi. Will she stay or will she go?

White Heat (1949)There are a lot of great movie psycho/killers: Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, Robert DeNiro as Travis Bickle, but one of the best is James Cagney as Cody Jarrett in “White Heat.” He’s ruthless, with a loose, urgent trigger finger and a habit of treating his women none to well – except for his beloved mother, who is possiblymore evil than he is.

Suddenly, Last Summer (1959)Elizabeth Taylor was one of Hollywood’s great beauties and one of it’s last classic film stars. There’s an iconic image of her from this film, on the beach in a white bathing suit, serving as bait for the Spanish boys her cousin Sebas-tian Venable is hoping to seduce. Katharine Hepburn is back, at her flinty best, trying to convince doctor Montgomery Clift to perform a lobotomy on the poor girl.

In the Heat of the Night (1967)Sidney Poitier is Philadelphia police detective Virgil Tibbs, stranded in Sparta, Mississippi, in this Best Picture Oscar-winner. Rod Steiger also won an Oscar for his role as bigoted police chief Bill Gillespie, who persuades Tibbs to help him solve a murder case, against the suspicious wishes of most of the locals. It’s a sharp, in-sightful look at the workings of 1960’s southern racism. They call him MR. Tibbs.

Karen LeeThis local musician and educator has performed extensively, from Asbury Park to Berlin and, most recently, in Cuba, for the 31st Havana International Jazz Festival.

Local educator and musician Karen Lee (aka “Ms. Schwarz”) keeps very busy these days,

alternating her time between teaching music and performing. During the day she can be found at Asbury Park High School, where she teaches both instrumental and vocal music. If you see her with an instrument in her hand, don’t assume it’s her specialty because she plays and teaches them all–violin, cello, bass, guitar, flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, piano and drums. Under her direction, the Asbury Park High School jazz and marching bands perform at numerous events throughout the year, including varsity football games, the Asbury Park Christmas tree lighting ceremony, St Patrick’s Day parade, Veterans and Memorial Day ceremonies, the Arc of Monmouth walkathon, the Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation Jazz Festival and the Monmouth County Teen Arts Festival.

So when does this “red hot” musician find the

time to devote to her own musical endeavors? That is an excellent question, especially with the shortage of venues dedicated to her favorite genre, jazz, and the ever-increasing number of musicians looking for gigs and willing to play for less and less remuneration. She has, however, had the good fortune to be selected to perform at various events sponsored by the AP Chamber of Commerce, including last August’s AsburyLovesJazz festival where she performed a program of mostly original music. In May she performed at both the Asbury Park Restaurant Tour and the Carousel Awards at the Berkeley Carteret Hotel.

This past December Karen Lee had the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to travel to perform at the 31st Havana International Jazz Festival in Cuba. Thanks to the efforts of Asbury Park Mayor Emeritus Ed Johnson , local entrepeneur Beverly Beveridge, and the Asbury Park Music Foundation’s director Matt

Hockenjos, a group of fourteen people from throughout the country traveled to Cuba on the one-year anniversary of the lifting of travel restrictions to that sunny island.

Various circumstances prevented her other band-mates from making the coveted journey, so our intrepid musical ambassador ventured forth without a band, trusting her instincts that there would be no shortage of musicians in Cuba to play with. As fate would have it, there were several ensembles of outstanding Afro-Cuban jazz musicians waiting with open arms to welcome the American into their musical family. Musical fireworks ensued as she performed jazz

classics* such as Blue Bossa, A Night in Tunisia and Afro Blue on flute and alto saxophone with her new musical comrades in the breezy outdoor venue known as Pabellon Cuba.

Karen Lee’s musical journey took her to Berlin, Germany back in December of 2009 for a three night engagement, where her original compositions, including the award-winning Blues for Amadou, were showcased to a very appreciate audience at “The A-Trane” jazz club. These days, she spends most of her time teaching and working on her Master’s Degree in Jazz History/Research from Rutgers University, Newark. She will be making a few local

Ms. Lee will also be appearing as guest vocalist with the Asbury Park Summer Concert Band on the boardwalk on August 18th. She hopes to return to Havana

in December for the 32nd Annual Havana Festival for more of the musical magic she experienced there on her first visit.

Richard G. Fernicola, MDBy Teja Anderson

Richard G. Fernicola, MD, a native and lover of the Jersey Shore, who grew up

right here in Allenhurst, is considered the leading expert on the 1916 NJ shark attacks that wreaked havoc and five grisly attacks on three peaceful NJ locations (Beach Haven, Spring Lake and Matawan Creek) during Woodrow Wilson's presidency. Twelve Days of Terror, Inside the Shocking 1916 New Jersey Shark Attacks, his best-seller on this subject, has been re-released to coincide with the 100 year anniversary.

With a new preface just in time for your summer beach read, Fernicola has packed his book with facts, photos, newspaper clippings, excerpts, theories and in-depth research on not only these events from July 1 - 12, 1916, but the days leading up to them, as well as many years of shark vs. man interaction to date.

Although Fernicola, himself, tends to lean toward the possibility of all five attacks being done by a single, rogue, great white shark, he says, "To know the truth, you would have to exhume the victims and extract species-specific shark tooth fragments, so we will likely never know for sure."

Fernicola is also quick to point out that, "Sharks are masters at avoiding humans." In fact, science tells us that you are more likely to be struck and killed by lightning and 455 times more likely to die from heat stroke than from a shark attack.

So, when you head to the beach this summer, remember to lather on that sunblock, drink lots of water and enjoy the Atlantic!

SUMMER READING

CLASSIC To Kill a Mockingbirdby Harper Lee (1960)Published in 1960 by Warner Books in New York City, “To Kill a Mockingbird” follows a lawyer, At-ticus Finch, who defends a black man accused of assaulting a white woman in the south during the Great Depression. Although Lee denied the book was autobiographical, her childhood friend and fellow novelist Truman Capote gave her away. He confirmed the story was true, except for the part about Lee’s mother dying in infancy, which was said to be a metaphor for her mother’s emotional absence. This Pulit-zer Prize-winner has often been considered a gateway book to reading. In other words, it’s the kind of required reading that has turned many unsuspecting students into voracious readers.

SELF-HELPLiving the Wisdom of the Tao by Wayne DyerWe all need a little help and some of us more than others. Most books, I believe, serve as a source of self-help, even if it’s just to escape re-ality. I can’t help but turn to Wayne Dyer for the way he lived his entire life with keen awareness and the burning desire to share everything he

learned along the way.Written in the sixth century B.C., “Tao Te Ching” by Lao Tsu became Wayne Dyer’s go-to when he needed it most. He follows each verse and interprets it in an effort to make it more acces-sible. Of course, you can read “Tao Te Ching” as well, unless you want to also learn how it became part of Dyer’s process and why he felt the need to share his experience with his already tremendous readership. Known as the “father of motivation,” before he died in 2015, Dyer wrote his memoir, “I Can See Clearly Now,” which I also highly recommend along with most of his books. He is a legend that will live on forever.

THRILLERThe Revenant by Michael PunkeHow do I love Leonardo Di Caprio? Let me count the ways. But of course, he has no bearing (pun intended) on this book and how well written and well, thrilling, it is. I also enjoyed Di Caprio’s portrayal of Hugh Glass’ epic survival story of how he was attacked by a grizzly bear and left for dead. This is Punke’s dramatized version of Glass’ actual experiences during the winter of 1823 in the Great Plains when he made the 200-mile trek across the frozen frontier. Punke paints an eye-opening picture of an event-of-a-lifetime

This has been a successful publishing year for me, some of my friends and family members. For a writer, a book is both the product and reward for all the focus, commitment, and perseverance

required to make it happen. Although I’ve written several books, this was my year to actually hold a published book in my hand. However, it’s not my own story.

“Chilangos in the House” is a book I co-authored with a modern motivator named Leo Cervantes, owner of Chilangos Mexican Restaurant in Highlands and Chilangos LaPlaya in Keansburg. Cervantes grew up in Mexico City across the street from a garbage dump in a house with a cardboard roof and no services. It only took until his 18th birthday when he was held at gunpoint by a couple of gangsters to know it was time to get out of the country he otherwise loved. The book traces his steps as he grew from a poverty-stricken child to an American citizen who made a name for himself in New Jersey. It’s the kind of story that serves as motivation to be your best self.

Aside from that, which I hope you’ll read before the eventual movie comes out someday (I am currently manifesting this dream), here are my picks for best summertime reads. May you be moved and inspired.

LOCAL CULTURENew Jersey Artists Through Timeby Tova NavarraYou may not believe how many artists live, prosper, create and exhibit their art in New Jer-sey. Tova Navarra, the former (and only) Asbury Park Press art critic, is among them. Since the 1970s, all while creating and exhibiting her own paintings, collages, and mixed-media pieces, she has made a career of documenting the work and lives of her fellow artists with the intention of putting them on the map. Many of the color photographs in the book were taken by Navarra, and each has a caption including interesting facts. There’s so much to learn. For instance, American art history began in Perth Amboy, NJ, when in the 1700s, a Scottish artist named John Watson came to Perth Amboy and set up his home as the first com-prehensive art gallery. Patience Lovell Wright of Bordentown was the first official American woman sculptor. Though it only begins to scratch the surface of the rich art history in NJ, many artists have waited 50 years for such a book. The last one written by William Gerdts in 1964 only includ-ed sculptor George Segal and painter James Kearns as the living artists with no mention of photographers, printmakers, illustrators, cartoonists, and mixed media artists. Navar-ra’s book is a ground-breaking work and we can look forward to the second volume, which is already in progress.

LOCAL LEGENDTwelve Days of Terror: Inside the Shocking 1916 Shark Attacksby Richard G. Fernicola, MDRichard G. Fernicola, MD, Allenhurst, is as much of a local legend as his best-selling book, Twelve Days of Terror: Inside the Shocking 1916 Shark Attacks; the vivid, scientific and historic account of the most horrific shark attacks ever recorded in NJ history. A physician, historian, and consid-ered to be the leading expert on this subject, Fer-nicola had 25 years of research under his belt

before he took on the task of producing two tele-vision documentaries, "Legends of Killer Sharks," and "Shark Attack: 1916" — that continue to air on the Discovery Channel and the History Chan-nel. A made-for-TV movie followed. Book signings and live events all around NJ in June, July and the Fall/holiday season will commemorate this forever indelible string of deadly shark attacks during Woodrow Wilson's presidency.

YOUNG ADULTBefore Goodbye by Mimi CrossThere’s a beautiful innocence in this book that makes me love it, especially for how Cross, a New Jersey-based musician, uses music to tell the story. In fact, Cross speaks her heart through the characters that experience life with a certain soundtrack as a constant in the background. But it’s not the kind of music you might expect. Cate and Cal are childhood friends devoted to playing classical guitar as well as each other. When a car accident rips one from the other (wouldn’t want to spoil it for you), survivor’s guilt becomes a harsh reality to be reckoned with. Thankfully, there are many lessons to be learned and the medicine of music to ease the pain.

FOR CHILDRENWhat Pet Should I Get? by Dr. SuessIn case you missed it last year, Random House published “What Pet Should I Get?,” a lost man-uscript found by Dr. Suess’ wife, Audrey Stone Dimond in 2013. As Dimond was cleaning out Geisel’s office, she planned to donate most of his valuable illustrations and early drafts to the University of California, San Diego. But there was also a box of what appeared to be stray sketches and notes, which she kept. Fast for-ward to October 2013, an appraisal of the con-tents revealed the manuscript titled “The Pet Shop,” about a boy and a girl who go to the pet store to shop for a pet, which was a few steps shy of completion. But Geisel’s assistant, Clau-dia Prescott, imitated his process well enough to finish the book. Years ago, when asked about writing children’s books without children of his own, he was quoted as saying, “I don’t write for children. I write for people.”

ASK THE CHEF

APZ: Describe a typical day for you.RG: I take my children to school before I go to work, and I give all my best to optimize my time at work. It’s always too short for all the work we have to do, but I have a good team, which makes a difference. At the end of the day I have the satisfaction that everything was done right.

APZ: Tell us about your background.RG: I’m originally from Monterrey, Mexico. Since I was very little I loved to cook, so I learned from

my mom, grandma, aunties, and books, but I also created my own recipes. I used to bring my parents breakfast in bed and I would ask my mom if I could make dinner. I enjoy cooking for people. It’s my way of expressing my love. I went to The Instituto Culinario de Monterrey, the first school for chefs in the area, where I was the third generation of graduating students. I did my internship at the Crown Plaza in Mexico. I also had my own kitchen where I cooked for people, like my neighbors and small companies that

AsburyParkZestFINAL_JEFF.indd 54 6/20/16 8:21 PM

Page 55: Asbury Park Zest

55

ordered lunch. It was good. Then I worked in a restaurant called Genoma, where they served Mexican-Asian fusion and I made salads. At another restaurant I was the head chef. We did a seafood buffet that I created myself.

APZ: What made you come to NJ?RG: I met my husband in 2009 while we were both on vacation in Cancun. When we both got home we started talking and meeting on Skype. Three months later, he came back to Mexico to see me in Monterrey. We spent a week together and I decided to leave everything and move to New Jersey with him. A year later -- after going back and forth -- in October 2010, we got mar-ried. Love makes you do crazy things.

APZ: How did you come to work at juice basin?RG: In 2010, when I first came here, I was a student at the Yoga Basin, which was owned by Reggie and Enrique. One day when I was fin-ished with my practice I saw Reggie busy at the kitchen bar. I offered to help her so she offered me a job there. I was very excited because I was very new to New Jersey.

APZ: What is your passion?RG: To create. I love making raw desserts. But now I am a mom of two little ones and I try to spend the most time I can with them. They are also my passion.

APZ: What are some of the best dishes to order at juice basin?RG: chick pea, RAW pad thai, kale salad, spring quinoa, brownie hearts, cherry coco, tiramisu, RAWSOME granola, spirulina crunch, and flax crackers. We make food that will help you com-plement your daily diet. We have a lot of good options for healthy snacks and yummy treats. We pay attention to customers and their needs, and offer the best selection of juices and foods. This is your place to get energy, to detox, get a healthy meal, a boost, juice shots, and skin care.

APZ: Why do you love working at juice basin?RG: First they gave me the opportunity to work when my English was not good at all. They be-lieve in me. I know that because Reggie always

has something good to say about me. She appreciates my talent and how I put all my love into what I do. She makes me feel good about me and in that way I'm growing. I can say I'm very blessed here in the USA. I have many angels helping me on earth.

APZ: How do you feel about raw food?RG: In school I didn’t learn anything about mix-ing juices or raw food. And now I love it. I like to use recipes I enjoy and make substitutions with raw food. I love to create and change recipes. Some people think of raw food the same way they think of raw meat, raw fish, etc. But we create delicious raw food using nuts, dates, veg-gies, seeds, and juices. Raw food makes you feel great, the way your tummy should feel.

APZ: Like what?RG: I like zucchini al pesto made with zucchini noodles and raw balls. Instead of meatballs, we make raw balls with walnuts, shredded carrot, cashews, dates, dried tomatoes, basil, and lemon juice, and a tomato salsa.

APZ: What do most people not know about you that you wish they knew?RG: I'm a very simple person. People may as-sume I crossed the desert for a better life or to make money, but I came here to follow my love.

APZ: What sets you apart from other chefs?RG: Customers and people who come in don’t know I'm a chef. You can spend a lot of money becoming a chef and getting a piece of paper that says that’s what you are. But a real chef is created with time and experience. I don’t feel I’m better than anyone. We all have a different style and personality.

ADAM CAMACHo

Adam Camacho, 23, moved from Oaxaca, Mexico to New Jersey two years ago. Oaxaca, a part of Baja California, the

twelfth largest state by area in Mexico, is still home to Adam's parents and his eleven brothers and sisters.

What brought Adam to America, and specifically New Jersey? "Money," he shares. "There are not as many opportunities in Mexico as there are here in the United States. My goal is to create a good living for myself and help my parents to have a comfortable future too."

How did he get here? "i walked," says Camacho. "It took me two months. I slept and ate anywhere I could to get here. I came here with $300.00 in my pocket. My father gave it to me, for me to follow my dream to come to America," Adam continues.

How did he find the famous Asbury Park eatery, Frank's Deli, on the north end of Main St? "When I first got here, "I lived with a friend in Lakewood. We were from the same town in Mexico." How did he find Asbury Park? "It's an ocean town. Everyone loves the ocean. I love Asbury Park and I love America. I'm so happy that America is now my home," he shares with a big smile on his face.

At 77 years old, Bruce Hirchak, Asbury Park, has the spirit of a 25-year-old. Energetic from the get go, at 18 he built a home for his "blushing bride," and got married at 19. Together, they

had three sons and one daughter. Today, there are seven grandchildren.

Q. How have you spent the past 77 years?

A. My father died at 37. I started working on the farm before I was 12 years old and then I trained as a boxer. But I still had time to go to school. I have 15 different trades under my belt. Leatherworking was the most rewarding. I repaired all kinds of leather products like saddles and orthotic shoes for doctors. Then I spent 26 years at Howe Electric Motors, and still had time to spend with my kids. I've travelled to 39 states to meet people and help them. I've been in Asbury Park for 16 years.

Q. What is your favorite thing in life?

A. Helping people, especially kids. I am directed by the Lord. I'm not a holy-roller, but my faith is my guiding light. I've made many mistakes, but I'd like to think I did 20 percent wrong and 80 percent right. I help a lot of people in my building. I live at Asbury Tower, on the ocean. There are a lot of bikes that get left in our garage. I asked the building management to let me take the bikes that no one claims. They agreed and I give them to unfortunate kids who can't buy them. I love doing this. It brings me a lot of happiness.

Donna Ayers-Vorbach Donna Ayers has been creating beautiful Fine Art portraiture for families on the Jersey Shore for twenty years. The naturalistic style Ayers favors is influenced by the small town of Spring Lake, NJ, where she grew up. With a developed skill of capturing the likeness and spirit of her subjects, Ayers brings together the beauty of portraiture and surroundings to create a painting that will be treasured for years to come.
