Have you ever stopped and thought about the number of volunteers it takes to live up to our motto – “It’s More Than a Community. It’s a Lifestyle.” Or how many additional paid staff members we would need if we did not have volunteers? Please don’t stop reading -- I know most of you are tired of hearing the constant pitch for more volunteers but I promise this will be the only time I write about it. Each fall brings our annual recruitment of committee members for the coming year. We are currently recruiting for members and/or alter- nates for all committees. In addition, we are recruiting chairs for the Budget & Finance Advisory Committee, Operations Advisory Committee, and Welcoming Committee, as well as for an assistant treasurer. Information concerning the committees can be found on ParkeHappenings or you can pick up a Committee trifold at the Clubhouse/Mail Pavilion or consider attending a meeting of the committees you are interested in joining. I know that we have a lot of new residents and this is your opportunity to get involved in your new community. If you are like me, when I first retired I had a fear of making any commitments for my time. But, most committees’ membership will only take 2 – 6 hours of your time each month. Of course, the actual number of hours depends on any special projects/events the committee is working on and how involved you want to be. Hold these Dates:

Parke Holiday House Tour On Saturday, December 19, from 4–6:30pm, all Parke resi-dents are invited to participate in our very own tour of homes decorated for the holidays. This is a very special and festive way for neighbors to visit with each other at this beautiful time of the year. A list of open houses and a map will be available the day before the event. We are looking for residents who would enjoy opening up their homes for others to visit. You do not have to be Martha Stewart... just willing to have fun entertaining your friends and neighbors for a few hours. A signup sheet will be posted in the Clubhouse notebook by November 6 for those willing to be hosts. Please consider including your home in our tour – you will have fun! If you have any questions, contact Penny Miller at 410-208-1472.

Penguin Swim on January 1 Attention all swimmers and donors/sponsors of the 2016 Penguin Swim! Registration is open for the 2016 Penguin Swim on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2016, at the Princess Royale Hotel.

The Parke Community Garage Sale The threatening weather associated with nor’easter-Hur-ricane Joaquin was such that we canceled the October 3rd Ga-rage Sale. Thank you to sellers (35 homes on 18 streets) who were available to open up their garages on October 10, the Rain Date. While there were fewer buyers (~125) than spring-time, we observed they arrived later in the morning with traffic at a steady flow from local buyers with others from Pocomoke City, Virginia, Fenwick Island and Texas! Two cars came through The Parke’s front entrance twice because the drivers announced they had to get more money. One man wanted man toys, i.e., tools! An email sent from Cathy Russo of 23 Fort Sumter South states: “Just want to thank you for organizing a well-run op-eration. This is the first time I participated and thanks to you there is less stuff in my house and more money in my pocket. I would be happy to help you with next spring’s sale if you need an extra pair of hands.” The event was supported by Diane McGraw (chair), Pat Addy, Susann Palamara, Mekia Cherone (webmaster) and Rick Rodgers (newsletter editor). Special thanks to Ocean Pines Association employees Jessica Conway who advertised our event on the Ocean Parkway bulletin boards and Teresa Tra-vatello (OPA Marketing and Public Relations Director) who personally contacted the Chair on October 3rd so to include our revised plans in the OPA Weather E-Lert Notice #2.

Pre-holiday Breakfast A pre-holiday continental breakfast will be held at the Clubhouse on Saturday, December 12, from 10:30am-1pm. Socialize with friends and neighbors and catch the holiday spirit. There will be coffee, tea, juice, fruit, bagels, and muffins. A signup sheet will be at the Clubhouse beginning Monday, No-vember 2. There is NO CHARGE. Any questions, please contact Peg Robinson at 410-208-6893.

You may register online at: aghpenguinswim.org. On the website, you should locate “Swim Team” and then find “The Parke at Ocean Pines.” When you register to swim, you must pay a registration fee of $25 which makes you eligible to re-ceive an official Swim T-shirt. The registration fee is new this year. Parke residents who wish to donate will be able to place checks and sign the donation list at the Clubhouse, as we have done in previous years, or donate online. We hope all Parke residents will support this worthwhile activity! The donation/sponsor notebook will be in the Clubhouse beginning the first of November. If you have any questions, please contact Gail Reese at 410-641-8951 or [email protected], or Diane Antoni-ello at 732-407-9369 or [email protected]. We would like to have a potluck lunch/dinner after the swim at the Clubhouse. However, in order to do this, we need a chairperson to organize and make arrangements! If you can help with this, please contact either Gail or Diane.

While this community event has been “checked off” as completed, a Garage Sale for spring will be planned. Early in 2016 the date will be pub-licized in the newsletter, website and bulletin boards.

Here’s a successful buyer at the garage sale, not an unusual sight on October 10.

Website News By Tom Weber As a result of a taskforce study, the Communications Ad-visory Committee has appointed a subcommittee to review and recommend changes to our official Parke website, Parke-happenings.com. After several meetings, our subcommittee is recommending a number of changes to make our website more “user friendly.” We will be working with our website consultant and webmaster over the next couple of months to implement a number of design changes. One challenge we face is that our residents use all sorts of devices such as desktop and laptop computers, smart phones and tablets to access our website with many different web browsers and many different versions of operating systems. As we redesign our website, our subcommittee will be do-ing our best to ensure that the website looks good regardless of your device, platform or software. We will be making the website “mobile friendly” using responsive web design prin-ciples. This will allow our webpage to adjust to the size of the viewing screen which will make viewing the site much easier on tablets and smart phones. Even with these design changes, one of our ongoing chal-lenges is to educate our users how to navigate through our website to find the information they want and need quickly and easily. This is made more complicated by the fact thatour users vary greatly in their technical knowledge. Our

community residents run the gamut from total computer nov-ices to web developers, so it is hard to satisfy everyone. Hopefully, the design changes we plan to make will make “surfing” our site easier and more enjoyable. We continue to feel that our community website is a valuable resource for our members. It is our most time-efficient communication method and can provide up-to-date information on meetings and activ-ities. It also provides the means to access our Resident Forum, Online Directory, Board and committee meeting minutes, and our Book of Resolutions. Have patience with us during the next couple of months as we implement changes designed to improve our website. Should you have any suggestions to im-prove the website or any questions, please contact me or any member of the Communications Advisory Committee.

From the General Manager’s Desk:

Kristi Clarke

Hello Parke Residents! Fall is finally here and this week has been glorious! Now that summer is wrapping up, we gear up for the winter months and some activities end as well as others begin. Irrigation Systems Please note that it is time to shut down your irrigation systems and winterize. The Association has done so in all areas except those zones that water the newly planted winter pansies. With the moisture in the near forecast, those areas will shut down as well.Mowing Schedule Weekly mowing has now switched to bi-weekly mowing due to the slowdown of grass growth and the limited remain-ing number of mows. At the time of this post, the mowing schedule will be as follows: mowing week of October 26, no mowing week of November 2, mowing week of November 9, no mowing week of November 16, final mow with bagging week of November 23. This will allow for the mowing to spread from now until the Thanksgiving week. The final leaf pickup will occur as late into the year as weather will allow to insure that most of the leaves have fallen. By doing so, the Association may save on the spring leaf pickup as we did this year.Gutter and Downspout Cleaning The final gutter and downspout cleaning will also take place as late into the year as possible so as to remove the bulk of the leaves after they have fallen. This is always a difficult timing to judge as it takes about three weeks for the contrac-tor to move through the Association. In addition, the gutters cannot be cleaned when freezing occurs. Please look for an-nouncements to come closer to the middle of November for scheduling.Seasonal Address Change Please update your seasonal addresses if you will be out of the Association during the months of November and De-cember, as there will be an important packet of information mailed out mid- to late-November as well as the 2016 pay-ment coupon booklets. Contact the Association staff to up-date your mailing address if you leave during this time. Above all, enjoy the change of seasons!

Committee ReportsBudget and Finance Committee By Rial Line, Chair

The budget process is well underway at this time. The Budget and Finance Committee presented a draft budget to the Board of Directors at their last meeting for their review. It may be of interest how this draft budget was derived. The general manager (GM) produces a complex budget projec-tion worksheet each month and presents that to Budget and Finance, thus giving monthly projections of year-end totals to B&F and creating an ongoing budget development tool. This process gives B&F the ability to see where our homeowners association is headed after each monthly meeting, giving the members an accurate tool to plan for 2016. Therefore, the GM’s 2016 DRAFT Budget will be based upon the 2015 oper-ating budget year-to-date Actuals (will include nine months of actual and three months of projections), committee requests, Replacement Reserve (RR) Items, updated Replacement Re-serve Contribution based upon the RR Study edit work, and any Capital Improvement items needed. The B&F Committee reviews the GM’s 2016 DRAFT Budget and projections for the remainder of 2015 then rec-ommends changes as necessary which are then passed on to the BOD for their review. The B&F Committee consolidates into the budget all the requests as elaborated in the GM’s Draft Budget, but doesn’t make recommendations for reduc-tions from other committees based on the merits of those re-quests. The Board of Directors is furnished with the details of those requests and makes those decisions as necessary. The

The Communications Committee still needs one more full-time resident to complete our slate for 2016. If you are inter-ested, please contact any existing committee member or join us at our next monthly meeting on November 4 at 1pm in the Clubhouse. Our committee’s responsibilities include: annual budget reporting, supporting the preparation of the Resident Directory, supporting the website and Forum, preparing com-munity surveys, maintaining the Mail Pavilion bulletin boards, and providing support for the Clubhouse library and display case. Our committee is also involved with The Parke Bench, advertising, and the Welcome Committee. In November the committee will be revisiting our existing policy regarding the Mail Pavilion bulletin boards. We cur-rently have three boards plus the LED Message Board. The HOA Board is used for information related to the BOD or standing committees. The second board is used to post resi-dent-to-resident information. This information needs to have the date posted at the bottom. All notices will be removed after three months. The third board is used for both Parke and Com-munity notices. All postings must be initialed by a Clubhouse staff member before they can be posted. All notices should contain information that is not longer than three months out. All events or notices Parke-related are posted on the top por-tion of the board and the community notices are posted on the bottom. The community-related postings should be for not-for-profit charity, education, social or religious events, politi-cal fundraisers, and musical or theatrical events. Postings of general interest are allowed, but we do not allow the postings of purely business ads. All duplicate announcements will be removed.

Covenants is very fortunate this year. We already have a full committee for 2016. Three members have terms that continue until December 31, 2016, and three members have chosen to re-new their membership on Covenants for another two-year term. However,Covenants is still looking for two alternate members. Alternate members attend all meetings throughout the year. However, their terms are for one year instead of two. Dur-ing this year Covenants alternates always got to vote because there was always at least one member who could not attend the meeting. I would like to take this opportunity to explain what Cov-enants does. We have a two-pronged role here at The Parke. Our first assignment is to review and revise Parke documents as changes are needed or as they are requested by the Board of Directors. For example, at our next meeting we will be look-ing at the Resolution – Collection of Assessments, which is A-20 on the Parke website under the Governing Documents tab. This document needs to be revised to agree with HOA law. Our second role is to act as Resident Advocate. When a resident has a complaint about the Board or a staff mem-ber or another resident, the resident can take this complaint to Covenants. We always try to respond based on The Parke governing documents. At our last meeting a resident came to complain about a recent revision to the Policy on HOA Activi-ties and Clubhouse Usage. Any resident can attend a meet-ing where there are times at the beginning and end of each meeting devoted to resident comments. A resident can also approach the Covenants chair either in writing (Letters can be brought to the Clubhouse reception area and put in the Cov-enants binder.) or by email at [email protected]. Cov-enants works hard to respect the confidentiality of all residents who come to our committee. The wonderful life that we all enjoy here in The Parke is only possible because of the work of the residents who vol-unteer for the Board of Directors and for the various commit-tees, including Covenants. If you want to maintain our lovely lifestyle and have your voice and opinions be heard, please consider visiting the different committees and volunteering

COMMITTEE REPORTS Continued From Page 7projections for this year are that we will come in slightly below the 2015 budget. Next year’s budget will be slightly higher, pri-marily due to increased requirements for replacement reserves and replenishment of the reserve account for snow removal.

COMMITTEE REPORTS Continued From Page 8for one of them. As one resident recently remarked, “People complain about where the boat is going. They need to get in and row.” Our next Covenants meeting is on Wednesday, November 4, at 9am. All residents are welcome.

Time goes so quickly; November al-ready. A lot of our homes look so festive with all our fall decorations and before you know it the holiday decorations will be go-ing up. Our guidelines say that we should limit our permanent yard decorations to no more than five (5) items, but holiday and seasonal decorations are different, and more lenient, because they are temporary, to be removed when that particular season or holiday is over. So get in the spirit of the season and show off your best seasonal decorating ideas. Do your part to dress up The Parke. We are winding up our mold inspection for this year with only a small handful of homes non-compliant with our guide-lines. A couple of those homes have unusual circumstances happening at this time but shortly, those and the others will be turned over to the Covenants Committee for further action. All in all, it has been a good year for mold compliance. The Parke is looking really clean as we get ready for winter. Trees, trees, trees. One thing that attracted us to The Parke was the trees. And it seems as though we continually talk about the trees. We are either taking them down, planting some new ones, or cleaning up trees that have fallen on us out of the protected woodlands. If a tree falls, the responsibility for the cleanup is the property owner where the tree fell. If you are dealing with trees from the storm, remember our Parke guidelines. The tree in your front yard is to be replaced. Our guidelines spell out the specifics if you need them or you can call the Clubhouse or the DRC with questions. And speaking of DRC, we will have some openings on our committee starting in January. Please consider volunteer-ing with us or with one of the other committees. If you have an opinion, get on a committee where you can do something about it. Volunteer now; do your part to help The Parke run smoothly and efficiently.

Operations Advisory Committee By Tom Piatti, Chair

During our October meeting, Ops recom-mended the Board fund two projects. The first was fall landscaping improvements around the Clubhouse. A lot of our shrub-bery is overgrown or has declined over the past 15 years. Some shrubbery will be heavily trimmed and failing shrubbery will

be moved to other locations in The Parke. The second recom-mendation was to purchase three benches for placement at: 1) the Hidden Lake gazebo, 2) the Chatham eyebrow, and 3) the Central Parke East eyebrow created this summer. This is a health and fitness initiative to provide additional rest stops for our runners and walkers. Also, Ops has recommended that funds be allocated in the 2016 budget for additional benches to be placed in various locations such as the Clubhouse north pond area and Fort Sumter East. Are you tired of constantly replacing those incandescent candelabra bulbs in your front post light? Many of your neigh-bors have replaced those old bulbs with LEDs. LED bulbs use 85% less energy and last eight or more years. The Home De-pot on Rt. 50 has both 25- and 40-watt, soft white equivalent LED bulbs in stock. If you are unable to change the bulb, The Parke Caring Neighbors Program is set up to “lend a hand” to residents who need occasional and infrequent assistance. Con-tact Steve or Cathy Habeger at 410-208-3504 or [email protected]. They will have a volunteer contact you to help. Have a grounds or facility topic that needs to be addressed? You can attend the next Ops meeting on Tuesday, November 10, at 9am or email me at: [email protected].

There is a lot to look forward to this month. On November 1 join us at the Club-house at 7pm for movie night. The film will be “American Sniper.” On November 9 there will be two buses leaving from The Parke for “Christmas at theBiltmore.” Who could have imagined that we would have such an overwhelming response for this trip? We are hoping to offer a cruise out of Baltimore to New England in the fall. On November 16 a tree will be put up in the Mail Pavilion with cards from G.O.L.D. for holiday gift-giving. Take one card or more to bring joy to someone less fortunate. Once you have purchased your gift, wrap it and put it under the tree in the Library of the Clubhouse after it is decorated on December 1. November 18 is the date of the Harvest Dinner at Dunes Manor. The event is a sellout but please put your name on the waiting list in case we are able to accommodate more or there are cancellations. December events include December in The Parke decorat-ing on December 1, holiday continental breakfast on Decem-ber 12, holiday house tour on December 19, and New Year’s Eve party on December 31. The Penguin Swim will take place on January 1 at the Princess Royale Hotel at 1pm. If you would like to offer an event, we would be happy to help you with it. If you’d like to join our committee, we’d love to have you. The Parke needs volunteers. Remember: Vol-unteers make things happen. We are always looking for new things to do. Not everyone likes the same things. “Variety is the Spice of Life.” Let us hear from you.

Red cHatters

On September 24, Hanna Myers hosted the Red cHatters on a wonderful and educational boat trip down the Po-comoke River which left from Snow Hill. The scenery was fantastic. Everyone agreed that lunch at the Harvest Moon was simply delicious, and a great time was had by all.

Your PC:Changing Email Accounts By Gene Edge ([email protected])

(My thanks to TechRepublic and CNET for much of the source material for my columns.)

The cameras in today’s smartphones rival standalone digi-tal cameras. But, how do you get those pictures off the small screen? Sharing images to Facebook is easy, and so is saving them on your PC if you know how.

Direct Connection: Attach your smartphone to your com-puter via the data cable. (For iPhones, make sure that iTunes is not running). When you plug in, your computer should rec-ognize the phone as a digital camera. The computer will find the DCIM folder. (Most digital cameras use the DCIM folder to store pictures).

In Windows, your phone will show up as a new drive under “This PC”, or “Computer.” Open the drive, then the DCIM folder, and you’ll have access to all your images. This doesn’t require special software. Create a folder on your PC (like “Cell Pics”) and copy or move the images from smartphone to PC.

Cloud Services: Cloud services offer automated backup of photos on your phone. If you use OneDrive, go into settings and turn on “Camera Backup.” The app will monitor the photo gallery and auto-upload images, which you can access on your PC. There’s also an automatic photo upload for Dropbox, via an app called Carousel. It copies any images to your Dropbox “Camera Uploads” folder, which you can access on Dropbox, Carousel, or your hard drive. You’re limited to how much you can store online for free; you have to pay for additional space. Removable Memory: Many smartphones have microSD card slots. If yours does, you can use it to move pictures to a PC. You’ll use your SD card reader on your computer and a “microSD” adapter to accommodate the microSD card. Once connected, the card functions like a flash drive; browse, drag, and drop your smartphone photos to your PC. You can buy the adapters for next to nothing.

Wi-Fi: Most mobile devices can connect to Wi-Fi automati-cally. You can use an app like Send Anywhere, or even the Google Chrome browser, to send your images anywhere.

Social Media and Email Sharing: Sharing your images on social sites like Facebook is a given with smartphones. Just go into your Photo Gallery, click the share button, and pick where you’d like to share it. Just be careful that you send the image at the maximum quality if you want to copy it to your PC. Android does a good job of this, but the iOS email app will try to resize your image to make the file send faster. When you click the Send button, you get a menu indicating the total size of attachment(s), and offering to reduce the size to small, medium, or large. The phone will re-scale all photos attached to the message. Keep it at “Actual Size” for the full quality; just know it will take forever to upload and send. All of my columns are available on the Parkehappenings.com website. Also, if you want to receive my occasional se-curity bulletins and tips, send an email to me and I will add you to my distribution list.

By the Numbers: Thanksgiving• About 46 million turkeys are eaten at Thanksgiving. In comparison, 22 million are consumed at Christmas and only 19 million at Easter.

• Only about 12 percent of Americans do not eat turkey at Thanksgiving.

• More than 3.5 million spectators attend the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Another 50 million watch on television.

• The average caloric intake on Thanksgiving Day, from snacking, dinner, dessert, and drinks, is about 4500 \ calories. To burn off the excess calories, an average man would need to walk for about five hours.

• Minnesota raises 45 million turkeys each year, more than any other state. They are followed by North Carolina (35 million), Arkansas (29 million), Indiana (17 million), and Missouri (17 million).

Safety Tip Making sure your front door is as secure as possible is a good way to help prevent a home burglary. Exterior doors should be strong enough to withstand excessive force. There should be a deadbolt lock with a minimum one-inch throw in each exterior door, and all strike plates and frames should be anchored to the home’s main construction. If your door shows signs of wear, warping, or cracks, it should be replaced. Fi-nally, install a doorwide-angle (180 degree) peephole.

Don’t get up from the feast of life without paying for your share of it.

Cancer and cardiovascular and respiratory diseases are cer-tainly major considerations when deciding to quit using to-bacco products, as these are significant risks to those who continue to use these products. But the use of tobacco is a major risk factor for developing high blood pressure as well, and quitting smoking can have a dramatic effect of lowering your blood pressure. Reducing stress in your life and learning how to cope with the inevitable difficult situations that you experience can also help keep your blood pressure in check. Learning stress man-agement techniques and avoiding stressful situations whenever possible can help reduce your general stress level. If you find that you are under chronic stress, it may be time to evaluate what you can do the alleviate some of the tension and anxiety in your life. From little changes to major lifestyle changes, re-ducing stress is an important component of your overall health and well-being and can have a real effect on your blood pres-sure. If you have any other medical conditions or diseases, talk with your doctor to find ways to avoid a rise in your blood pressure, either from the condition itself, or as a side-effect of treatment. You should also find out if any medications you are taking could raise your blood pressure. If so, consider alterna-tive treatments, use good self-care to stay healthy, and have your blood pressure monitored every six months to a year.

Health MattersPreventing High Blood Pressure High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a condi-tion in which the pressure inside your arteries is abnormally high. Estimates show that more than 60 million Americans, perhaps up to 72 million, have high blood pressure. It is some-times called the “silent killer,” as about a third of sufferers are not even aware they have it, sometimes for years. Un-controlled high blood pressure puts you at increased risk of serious health problems, including stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and kidney disease. Hypertension is a major risk fac-tor for two of the leading causes of death--heart disease and stroke. The good news is high blood pressure is not only easily detected, it is also highly treatable. It is always easier to pre-vent high blood pressure than to try to control it once it has developed. The steps you should take to reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure are similar to those recom-mended to reduce your risk of weight gain, cancer, and heart disease. In general, you should eat a healthy diet rich in whole grains, lean meats, fruits, and vegetables. Also, studies have shown that even a small decrease in sodium intake can have a dramatic effect on your blood pressure. Exercise is important as well. Not only does it help with weight gain, but it can reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure. In studies, those who were able lose even a small amount of weight showed a decrease in their blood pressure. Smokers have an added incentive to try to quit smoking.

Small cheer and great welcome makesa merry feast.

On The Lighter Side A cabbie picks up a nun. She gets into the cab, and notices that the VERY handsome cab driver won’t stop staring at her. She asks him why he is staring.

He replies: “I have a question to ask, but I don’t want to of-fend you.”

She answers, “My son, you cannot offend me. When you’re as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about everything. I’m sure that there’s nothing you could say or ask that I would find offen-sive.”

“Well, I’ve always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me.”

She responds, “Well, let’s see what we can do about that…1) You have to be single and2) You must be Catholic.”

The cab driver is very excited and says, “Yes, I’m single and Catholic!”

“OK” the nun says. “Pull into the next alley.”

The nun fulfills his fantasy with a kiss that would make a hooker blush. But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying.

“My dear child,” said the nun, “why are you crying?”

“Forgive me, but I’ve sinned. I lied and I must confess, I’m married and I’m Jewish.”

The nun says, “That’s OK. My name is Kevin and I’m going to a Halloween party!”

Household HintsFireplaces – Replacing Remote Control Batteries From Tom Piatti

The propane fireplaces in Parke homes are not connected to 110v power. They ignite using battery-operated remote controls, so if house power is lost in the winter you have a heat source. The handheld remote has two batteries: a small 12-volt and a 2032 “button” type. What you may not know is that there are also four “AA” batteries inside the wall-mounted receiver. If these are dead, no ignition will occur from either the remote control or wall switch. These batteries are easy to change. You will need two screwdrivers, a small Philips head (the size found in an eyeglass repair kit) and a flat head. Remove the wall plate and the black plastic box. The box has a slide plate on one side and behind the slide-opening plate lie four AA bat-teries (see illustra-tion). For detailed information, search the internet for: “Skytech 1001 LCD instructions.”

It is not the quantity of the meat, but thecheerfulness of the guests, which makes the feast.
