ISSUE #14 14th May 2015

DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY...

Easier said than done, if only we could all

walk around singing the words of Bob

Marley every day!

The life of a student is stressful and

provides many sources of anxiety. Course

loads, exams, study schedules, NAPLAN,

extra-curricular activities, work and

personal relationships are some of many

things students are juggling. With this kind

of roster facing the average student, it’s

easy to see how their mental and physical

energies can be taxed to the limit in a very

short time.

Teachers and parents constantly report

increases in students’ levels of anxiety,

sometimes recognised through school

refusal, illness, increase absenteeism,

disengagement and low self-belief.

Students can start to develop negative

mindsets or “mind viruses” which if left

unattended to, can become crippling. I’m

a failure, I’m all alone, I can’t do this, I

want to give up, I am/made a mistake.

While words of encouragement and

affirmation are important in response to

these mindsets, just as critical is the

modelling of positive coping responses by

parents and other ‘significant’ adults.

Good modelling involves;

1. Showing students how to cope with

emotions (not just telling them). It involves

showing those with anxiety how you use

helpful self-talk in a difficult situation (eg

“This looks a bit scary, but I’ll give it a go”).

2. Discouraging avoidance. Sometimes

when students say they feel sick, they are

describing feeling anxious. It is important

that they do not avoid things like school or

homework unnecessarily.

3. Encouraging students with anxiety to

attempt new things and praising them for

trying. There is significance in

emphasising ‘trying’ rather than success

when anxiety is an area of difficulty.

4. Modelling the practise of coping skills.

Practise using coping strategies for

challenging situations. Help your student

talk about problems and support them to

come up with possible solutions.

5. Avoiding getting angry as a response. If

a student simply refuses to do something

even after you have encouraged them and

broken the task into steps, it may simply

be overwhelming at that time. Sometimes,

backing off and praising them for doing as

much as they could is needed, later trying

again with smaller steps and again

encouraging them to have a go, one small

step at a time.

Anxiety affects everyone, the number of

triggers and sources growing all the time.

The above steps are useful and can work,

however they are all merely self-help

remedies and fixes, as is singing a Bob

Marley song. Above and beyond all this is

a mental and spiritual peace that can be

sought and found through the ultimate

parent, psychologist, doctor and mentor –

Jesus Christ. He promises to supply rest

and a peace that no man can comprehend

or explain – if we just “come to him, all

those who are weary and burdened” –

Matthew 11:28
