Dolphin Splash 4th Grade Owl Pellets
By: Justin F., Tanner O., and Andrew L.
The fourth graders had a lot of fun dissecting owl pellets. An owl pellet is
something that an owl regurgitates. We did owl pellets because we were studying
owls and birds of prey.
First, we got our owl pellets and tweezers. Then we started to dissect them.
The bones were fragile, so we had to be careful with them.
“I was surprised to find a skull in mine.” “In my owl pellet
I got a mole shoulder bone.” “I found a big hind leg bone.”
We had a great time; these are what 4th graders said; “it smelled bad”
and “it was cool.” As you can see, we had a great time dissecting owl
pellets.

Our Opinions about Newspaper Club
By: Maddie M., Savannah W. and Brooke M.
Newspaper Club has had a great year and we would like to share some
of our thoughts about being journalists.
Many of us have enjoyed interviewing kids and teachers. Others have
enjoyed doing comics and hidden pictures. One person said, “This is
the best club I have been in all year!”
Club members said it helped them practice typing and made them better
writers. All of us made some close friends, made new friends and
worked with new people. Others said they learned about what other
students are doing and what’s happening at our school.
These are Newspaper Clubs’ final thoughts.
Newspaper Club has some advice for future journalists.
• Always write a rough draft!
• Know how to take questions
and answers and turn them into
paragraphs.
• Writing an article is a process;
take it one step at a time.
• Be able to write good questions.
• Stay on topic!
• Have a great title!
The 4th Grade State Fair
By: Justin L., Caroline H., Emily Z.
Everyone was excited for the state fair! The 4th graders
got to pick a state out of a bag and researched on it. They be
made an exciting float of their state. Students could choose the
things they wanted for the 5 sides of their own float. They had
to cover the sides to design it. The 4th graders also got to make
a license plate for their state, and put it on a t-shirt. Students
needed to make climate dolls for their project. A climate doll is
a doll who is dressed with fabric to look like the clothes people
wear during winter and summer, or whatever two opposite sea-
sons you chose in the state. The climate doll was placed on a
place mat with two different scenes. The key chains were the
Shrinky-Dinks which were baked until it was a key chain. A
powerpoint was done at school full of information they have re-
searched. We interviewed 4th and 5th graders about their
experience.
Some of the 5th graders favorite parts of the state fair last
year were making the floats, doing the concert, and making the
t-shirts. Some people liked their state and some didn’t. One of
the 5th graders had Utah. The main part of her float was Mount
McKinley. Another 5th grader had California, and the main part
of her float was the Golden Gate Bridge. The last 5th grader
had Alaska and the main part of his float was the mountains that
are there.
We couldn’t wait for State Fair! We’ll
have to see what this year’s 4th graders
enjoyed the most.
Fourth Grade flies with the Raptors By Aditi P., Aubree C., and Ben W.
Our fourth grade classes had the chance to see raptors up close when the Willowbrook Wildlife Association came to tell us about birds of prey. Fourth graders had been studying owls and other raptors. We had to split up our classes because we had such a big group. One day, Mr. Weis’ and Mrs. Petzke’s classes went, and another day Mrs. Bluhm’s, Mrs. Dodd’s and Ms. Benzin’s classes went. In the gym, we did an experiment with two long ropes knotted together. The process taught us what a healthy or injured creature goes through without the four important parts of survival: food, water, shelter, and oxygen/air.
After that we played a game that required that some of us be hawks while others were mice. The mice had to run to one end of the gym to get a food point, a Styrofoam flower. If they were able to get two food points without being caught by the hawks, they lived. If they did get caught by hawks, they would have to go to mouse heaven by standing against the wall. It taught us that hawks as well as other raptors need plenty of food to survive, which can be a problem when one is a better hunter than the other.
The fourth graders had lots of fun learning about raptors,
and they hope that people will protect these amazing creatures!
