The Granville Community Has A New Business In Town!
It’s called Ralphie Boy’s Pizzeria & Grill. Located near the intersection of Routes 22 & 149, it
shares space with the Granville Subway.
Steve Bernard who has owned & operated the Subway store for 8 years, will now do the same for
Ralphie Boy’s. Steve made an agreement with his brother Ben to take over the space previously
occupied by Bongo’s, renaming it after their father Ralph.
Ralph was a lifelong Granville resident and former co-owner of The White Rock Restaurant in South
Granville with his wife Peg. They ran “The Rock” from
1964 to 1975, hosting many of the area’s wedding recep-
tions and other celebrations. With their six children, they
lived in a small house attached to the back of the restau-
rant. When Ralph wasn’t bartending, he was on the road
selling Schlitz and Reingold Beer. He would buy beers for
patrons in the bars and taverns only to see some of them
waiting at the next stop! Peg was the cook (and some-
times bouncer!) Peg also worked the night shift at
Sherwood Medical in Argyle.
The family lost Ralph in the year 2000 at the age of 79
after he fought a 3 year battle with Multiple Myeloma, a
blood cancer. An avid sports fan, he rooted for his beloved
New York Sports teams right to the end. He also contin-
ued to follow the scores of his almamater where he once led the 1938 Granville Basketball Team to
their last Northern Conference Championship. He went on to serve in WWII from 1942-1945 where
he was stationed In Okinawa, Japan. Many times he insisted he had a load of cash buried there!
Although his Army enlistment papers had his height as 5’9”, Ralph often argued that he was “Hanging
6 foot.”
Many older residents of Granville remember Ralph as a genuinely nice guy willing to help out anyone.
He even allowed his kids to call him Ralph or Ralphie, instead of his well deserved title of Dad.
As for the new business, Steve has decided to improve and create new menu choices, but keep some
of the favorites from Bongo’s. He’s added seasoned crust to the pizza, gourmet grilled to order burgers,
and a few Mexican choices. Sister Dee Dee, who rivals her mother as the best cook in the family, is
working on homemade specialities for Ralphie Boy’s including mac & cheese and cole slaw. She also
recommended a fish fry item called “The Sea Dog” which Steve has renamed “Gale’s Sea Dog,” after
his sister who lives near the ocean in Maine.
Steve’s brother Midge is always being called upon to repair or remodel something for his mechani-
cally challenged brother. Youngest sibling, Dan has yet to be called upon for help but has been seen
scanning the parking lot.
There’s a story about the pictures hanging on the dining room walls at Ralphie Boy’s. Ralph loved
old movies and sitcoms and his favorite actresses were the Three “Tomata’s” as he would still call
them today: Raquel Welch, Ann Margret & the Italian born, Sophia Loren.
Steve is hoping for the best, along with his sons Alex, Noah and fiance Brooke. He welcomes all
comments or ideas.
Ralphie Boy’s is open Monday through Saturday 11 am - 9 pm. To have your order ready
when you arrive or for local delivery, call 518-642-8175.

ON THE FARMby Andy Manne
This week’s ag report issponsored by:
DON’T KISS YOUR CHICKENS! That’s the message fromthe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is blam-ing a salmonella outbreak on backyard chicken owners beingoverly affectionate with their flocks. Seems like common sense, right? The CDC says more than 180 people have come down withsalmonella across the U.S. this year from contact with back-yard poultry. Thirty-three of them became so sick they required
hospitalization.“We do not recommend snuggling or kissing the birds or touch-ing them to your mouth,” says Megin Nichols, a veterinarianwith the CDC, “because that is certainly one way people be-come infected with salmonella.”Over the past 10 years there’s been a boom in backyard poul-try in the U.S. And while the CDC may view chickens as po-tential vectors of disease, a growing clutch of chicken ownersviews them as family pets. Some people reason: “If they’re used to humans holding themthen you can walk in [to the coop] without worrying about arethey going to jump or get scared,” she says. “You want to beable to come into the pen to feed them and water them withoutthem starting to fly all around and go crazy.”One owner says the birds are a surprisingly calming presence.Sometimes if she needs a little “de-stress” time, she’ll bring astool into the coop and sit with the hens. “They come. Somewill jump up in my lap. They make this peaceful farm noise. What’s better when you’re in the middle of a workday than tohear that?”The CDC is arguing against this type of casual human/chicken
fraternizing.“While poultry do appear clean they do carry bacteria,” saysCDC vet Nichols. She also warns that backyard chicken owners should make suretheir birds stay in the backyard and do not come into the house.“We encourage that people live in their environments indoorsand poultry stay outdoors,” Nichols says. She adds that if peopledo handle their chickens, they should make sure to wash theirhands (and apparantly their lips) afterward.
