Buy Local   We all know that the Holiday shopping season “officially” starts on “Black Friday” the day after Thanksgiving. But Between “Black Friday” and “CyberMonday” (the biggest online shopping day of the season) is what has become known as “SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY.” It is a day dedicated to

supporting small businesses nationwide. Last year over one hundred million people came together to shop SMALL in their communities on Small Business

Saturday. This year it falls on November 30th, 2013. And we are encouraging you to make it even bigger this year by shopping in your hometown &

surrounding communities that Saturday.

This day was introduced 4 years ago by American Express to encourage people to think about doing their holiday shopping at a local business. You can go

to the American Express website for more information on the program.

Shopping locally keeps tax money in our county, it keeps jobs here, it gives business owners the opportunity to earn a living here, it keeps our

business districts viable & attractive, it saves you gasoline & saves you time, it provides friendly and caring service to the customer, it provides

you with quality specialty items that can’t be found in mall stores and often they are locally produced items, which further sustains our local

economy.

We are calling Small Business Saturday Small Business Black Saturday. Let’s make this the best holiday season for our local businesses

throughout our communities by starting your holiday shopping here on Friday, Nov 29th and Saturday, Nov 30th and beyond.

This week’s ag report is sponsored

by:

The party’s over for the corn market, and smart producers arelocking in prices well into 2015, says one market analyst. The boom times have ended. And smart producers are forwardcontracting their crops and locking in prices well into 2015 toensure some level of profit.“There will be a tremendous readjustment that plays out overthe next five years,” says Dan Basse, president of AgResouceCompany in Chicago.Corn producers have become accustomed to making $200 to$400 per acre above breakeven. Going forward, Basse says, average income over cost levels will land somewhere betweena $30 profit and a $30 loss.“What’s happened is that everyone in the ag industry has hadhis hand in the farmer’s pocket,” says Basse.Fertilizer costs, land rents, machinery and equipment costs have

all combined to raise the breakeven on corn to somewherebetween $4.35 and $4.85 per bushel, he says.“The key point is that the cost side is where the farmer is beingsqueezed,” he adds.Basse expects spot corn prices, Chicago, to drop to $3.50 in2014, and then to as low as $2.75, possibly lower, by 2015.While the price plateau for corn is higher than it was beforeethanol, it won’t be anywhere near as high as it was between2005, when the ethanol boom began, and 2012, when corn pricespeaked.“We think the new plateau for corn prices is $2.75 to $5.50,”says Basse. If Basse is right and corn prices fall to predicted levels as yieldsreturn to trend levels, land prices are also likely to plunge.“I don’t know how someone will be able to afford the landrents that people are gett ing today,” he says.  (A word of causion: don’t take so-called experts’ word forit..do your research carefully.)
