Message of the Founder - Chancellor Vels Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies (VELS University) has now

successfully completed the eighth year of its service to the society by offering quality higher

education. Started in a humble way in 1992, the Vels group of institutions have now grown in

stature to occupy a respectable position as a seat of learning and advanced research and as one of

the reputed universities in India. It is indeed a matter of great satisfaction for me to note that

significant improvement has been made in the sphere of imparting higher education at the

University.

Innovative research in various new disciplines and new courses have been introduced

which will greatly help to cultivate an atmosphere essential for acquiring a high academic

standard.

Vels University encourages research in many ways. It provides fee concession for its

teachers who register for Ph.D., at this University. Vels University also provides 'Starter Grants' to

the young teachers to encourage research. Monetary incentives are given to those who attend

National, International conferences and publish research papers in Journals. Fellowships with a

monthly stipend of Rs. 7,500/- are provided to each full-time Ph.D. research scholar. All our efforts

to promote research have started yielding fruits.

The University has so far filed 27patents and 7 of its technologies have been transferred for

production. The University also receives research grants from external funding agencies which

strengthens our research activities. I am happy to note that the University is bringing out an

exclusive Prospectus for Ph.D. research program.

Message of the Vice-Chancellor

Economic prosperity of a country mainly hinges on its ability to innovate and develop to

enhance the quality of life of the people. Research in general provides a strong base to act as

launching pad for innovations. Research can be broadly classified into two types: (i) Fundamental

research and (ii) Applied research. While the outcome of fundamental research has influence over

a wider spectrum of innovative works, the applied research will be focused on providing

solutions to specific problems through innovative means. It is important that both fundamental

and applied research are given due importance for balanced growth of research activities.

Teaching and research being the two vital activities of higher educational institutions like

universities and colleges, universities play a very important role in enhancing the ability of a

country to innovate and develop at a faster rate. Thus, Indian universities have an important role

to play in the developmental process of our country.

Realizing this said role of universities and the associated responsibility, Vels University has

attached due importance to its research activities by various means. The university has

established a research centre named, Centre for Advanced Research and Development (CARD)

focused only on research and developmental activities. The university is active in sponsored

research work funded by external agencies. Also, the university itself provides seed money to

young researchers as 'Starter Grant' for research work. The Ph.D. program of the university run

both on full-time and part-time basis emphasizes on both fundamental and applied research

leading to socially relevant innovations and developments. The selected full-time Ph.D. scholars

receive Fellowship to pursue research. This prospectus for the Ph.D. program has been prepared

to provide comprehensive guidelines for research scholars, guides and administrators to enable

smooth implementation of the program. I hope that the Ph.D. Scholars will find this prospectus to

be useful throughout the program of study and I wish the research scholars all the best.
