Spanish Accents
There are two accents for vowels and one accent for a consonant. For specific information on what the accents do to change the pronunciation of the letters they modify, please see the appropriate letter pages.
The acento ´ (accent) can only be on vowels, e.g., Adiós.
Learn these basic rules:
With most words in Spanish, the spoken accent falls on the second syllable from the end—and ends in either a vowel, n or s. These words do not have written accent marks.
With word ending with a consonant other than n or s second,
the spoken accent falls on the last syllable. These words have no written accent marks.
All words that violate rules 1 and 2 have written accent
marks such as corazón, jardín, fácil, habló, or comí
There is another group of words that need accent marks such as biología or Raúl, which are used to break a natural dipthong. I often check the dictionary for these problematic words.
The last group of words is very special, and the dictionary will help
you with these. Several words such as solo, se, si, de and mas change meaning with a written accent mark. Beware of these problematic little words.
The acento diéresis ¨ (dieresis or umlaut) in Spanish is used on the letter u when preceded by g and followed by another vowel to indicate the u should be pronounced., e.g., pingüino, vergüenza.
The tilde ~ (tilde) is found only on the letter N. It changes the N sound (like no) into an NY sound (like canyon), e.g., año.
It is essential to put accents in their proper places - an incorrect or missing 13
accent is a spelling mistake just as an incorrect or missing letter would be. The only exception to this is capital letters, which are often left unaccented.
Spanish Accent Homographs
Think accents don't matter when writing in Spanish?
Think again!
el – the (masculine) él – he
si – if sí – yes
mi – my mí – to me, me
tu – your tú – you
paso – I passpasó – he passed
hablo – I talk habló – he talked

LET’S SPEAK SPANISH
What are cognates?A cognate is a word whose meaning is blatantly obvious because it exactly, or very closely, resembles an equivalent English word. The only difference between the two words lies in their pronunciation. In many instances, you can immediately recognize Spanish words because English language has appropriated them. Here, for example, are some high frequency words you should find quite useful: Take a look at the paragraph below, and note how many words are similar to those in English.Marcos es estudiante. Elena es estudiante, también. Marcos es americano y Elena es mexicana. Marcos y Elena están en una clase de matemáticas. Marcos usa una computadora e Elena usa una calculadora para los problemas difíciles. Ellos estudian matemáticas en la universidad. Su profesor es el Señor García. Es una persona muy inteligente e interesante.Even if you are new to Spanish, you not only recognize several words but you probably also know what the paragraph is about. There are many words that are written the same way in Spanish and in English. Try to pronounce them in Spanish.
