7th Year at eMU - eastern Michigan ‘80

head coach

sUe Parks

A familiar face returned to direct the Eastern Michigan University women’s track and field and cross country programs in 2006.

Sue Parks, a former EMU track great, a member of the EMU Ath-letic Hall of Fame and the daugh-ter of legendary men’s track coach Bob Parks, was named the head coach for the women’s track and field and women’s cross country teams by EMU Athletics Director Derrick Gragg on July 27, 2006.

“We are very excited to have someone with the outstanding track background of Sue Parks join our staff as the head women’s track and field and cross country coach,” Gragg said, when naming Parks. “Sue has been a champion, both as a collegiate runner and as a coach, on the track and field and cross country national level. She has developed top programs at every stage of her coaching career, and we are confident that her coaching success will continue here at Eastern Michigan Univer-sity.”

In 2011, Parks and the Eagles captured the MAC Indoor Track Championship, as well as being named the Coach of the Year for the indoor season. It was her ninth-career Coach of the Year award after taking eight at Ball State.

Currently, Parks serves as an at-large representative of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coaches Association Executive Committee, which is in charge of all NCAA cross country propos-als.

Prior to returning to EMU as the head coach of the women’s track program, Parks enjoyed tremen-dous success in a 12-year tenure at Ball State from 1994-2006, win-ning eight Mid-American Confer-

ence titles and finishing runner-up 10 times in track and cross country. She was named MAC Women’s Coach of the Year a total of eight times, four for indoor track (1996,1998,2001), four for outdoor track (1996, 1998, 2000, 2001) and one for cross country (2003). In addition, she was selected as an NCAA Regional Coach of the Year in indoor and outdoor track in 1998. Her 2002 cross country team became just the third MAC team to ever qualify for the NCAA Champi-onship when it accomplished the feat in 2002.

From 1990-94 she was an assis-tant cross country and track coach for both the men’s and women’s programs at the University of Ari-zona. Her UA women’s cross coun-try squads placed 11th, 14th, and

head COaCh sue PaRks

12th at the NCAA Champion-ship in 1991, 1992 and 1993, respectively. Her 1993 cross

country team won the NCAA District 8 championship. She was also named NCAA District 8 Coach of the Year after the 1993 cross country season. During her tenure at Ari-zona she coached seven All-Americans in women’s cross country and track, including the 1994 5,000-meter cham-pion in the NCAA indoor track championship.

Before heading to Arizona, Parks was the head women’s cross country coach and as-sistant women’s track coach at Michigan State University from 1988-90. She was gradu-ate assistant coach for the EMU men’s track team from 1987-88.

From 1984-87, she was the

women’s head cross country coach and women’s assistant track coach at the University of Michigan. She coached eight All-Americans in cross country and was selected as Big Ten Conference Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1986. Her other coaching stints include serving as the head women’s track coach at Ann Arbor Gabriel Rich-ard in 1982 and the head women’s cross country coach at Ann Arbor Huron High School from 1979-83.

Parks is certainly no stranger to EMU and the Ypsilanti area. She was raised in Ypsilanti and attend-ed Ypsilanti High School where she was an outstanding cross country and track competitor. She was a Michigan high school cham-pion and former record holder in the 800 meters and also competed for the United States in the Pan

American Games.

Parks went on to graduate from EMU with a bachelor’s degree in 1980 and a master’s degree in 1988. While an undergraduate, Parks was a MAC cross country invitational champion in 1976, 1977 and 1978 and was also an Olympic Trials qualifier. She was elected to the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. Her father, Bob Parks, was the head men’s track and field and head men’s cross country coach at EMU for 34 years, from 1967-2000.

Zach Glavash, a former University of Illinois and Texas Tech track and field All-American, was named assistant women’s track and field coach at Eastern Michigan University by Head Coach Sue Parks Tues-day, Sept. 13, 2011.

“After talking to some of the top coaches in the nation about who would be a great fit for our assis-tant position, Zach Glavash was the one name that

emerged,” said Coach Parks. “I feel that Zach is going to help propel our already strong sprint/hurdle/jump group to a new level. Not only was Zach an elite athlete, he has also been a part of championship teams as a coach. He wants to win championships and take our athletes to the very highest level. I am excited to bring him to EMU.”

Glavash joins the EMU women’s track and field staff full time after recently serving as a volunteer coach for the Aggies of Texas A&M University from 2010 until being hired by Eastern. From 2007-2010 he was a graduate assistant coach for the Texas Tech Red Raiders track and field team and assisted the Red Raiders’ football team as a speed consultant.

In all, Glavash has four seasons of Division I coaching experi-

ence, including coaching five NCAA National Champions and one Olympic Silver Medalist.

A 2007 graduate of Texas Tech University, Glavash enjoyed an outstanding career at both the University of Illinois and as a Red Raider. Prior to transferring to Texas Tech, Glavash was a three-time Big Ten Champion, as well as a 2005 Division I All-American in the 800-meter dash. He was a 2004 Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree, as well as an ESPN Academic All-District award winner in that same year. The two-time George Huff Award recipient was a Dike Eddelman Award Finalist and Academic All-Midwest Region recipient in 2005.

Upon joining the Red Raiders track & field team, he was named a team captain and was the 2007 Big 12 800-meter Champion. Glavash was also a two-time All-American in the 800-meter. The 2007 NCAA Mountain West Region Athlete of the Year was a two-time Academic All-American and Academic All-Big 12 member.

After finishing his undergraduate degree in human develop-ment, Glavash pursued a Master of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Science from Texas Tech University. His concentra-tion was in Exercise Phiysiology and Biomechanics and he earned his masters degree in May of 2010.

The 28-year-old Glavash (6-14-84) is a native of Chillicothe, Ill. and graduated from Illinois Valley Central High School. He is the son of Dave and Becky Glavash and has a twin sister, Elissa, who was a cheerleader at the University of Illinois.

The 2012-13 season marks the third season that Jerel Langley will serve as an assistant coach to Sue Parks with the women’s track and field program.

In his three seasons at East-ern, Langley’s athletes have seen tremendous success on the conference level as well as the national scene. In the 2011 season, Langley guided Jessica Hemingway to a 2nd Team All-American honor at the Outdoor Na-

tional Championships. Hemingway also set new Indoor and Outdoor school records in the women’s pole vault at 13’7.25” and 13’11.25”, respectively. Hemingway’s jump of 13’11.25” also achieved the “B” standard for the US Outdoor National Championships. Hemingway also captured the 2011 Outdoor MAC vault title, the first of her career, while finishing 2nd at the Indoor MAC Championships. Hemingway also earned Academic All-MAC honors during the outdoor season

The 2012 season saw Langley’s athletes make tremendous improvements. Sophomore Kate Wolanin captured the 2012 MAC Indoor Pentathlon Championship, the first in school his-tory. Junior Meghan Powers captured another EMU All-MAC honor with her 2nd place finish in the indoor pole vault. Senior Angela Scarber shattered the school record in the weight throw with a toss of 58’6.75”. Freshman Lydia Gomez-Diaz

also had a successful year throwing, obliterating the previ-ous school record in the hammer throw (166’9”) out to an impressive 190’10” while earning All-MAC honors by taking second at the Outdoor MAC Championship. Both Scarber and Gomez-Diaz earned first round National Championship berths at the East Regional. Junior Tatijana Jacobson, a transfer from Bowling Green, leaped to the second best mark in school history in the high jump at 5’8.75”, narrowly missing a first round National Championship berth by virtue of a tiebreak. Langley’s group also had great success academically as well, Powers and Wolanin were named Academic All-MAC for the indoor season while Scarber and Gomez-Diaz were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for their efforts during the outdoor season.

Langley previously coached at Kennesaw State. In his two years there, he served as the recruiting coordinator as well as direct coach for the combined events, pole vault and javelin. Between 2009 and 2010, Langley coached 15 All-Atlantic Sun performers, saw 12 school records broken, and had five conference champions. Langley also saw 15 Atlantic Sun All-Academic members under his guidance. In the 2009-10 sea-son, Langley was a part of a KSU men’s program that captured the Atlantic Sun Triple Crown.

Originally from Cumming, Ga., Langley attended Roswell High School before ultimately graduating from North Forsyth. He attended Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina, where he graduated with a degree in Sports Management and competed on the Track and Field team. Langley also holds a Master’s degree in Applied Exercise and Health Science from Kennesaw State University.

2012-13 eMu TRaCk & field seasOn OuTlOOk

The Eastern Michigan University women’s track and field team enters the 2012-13 sea-son hoping improve on a sixth-place finish at the MAC Indoor Championships and a fifth-place at the MAC Outdoor Champion-ships. EMU will have a great chance at that as the MAC Indoor Championships come to Bowen Field House, Feb. 22-23. The Eagles will be led be captains Morgan Churchwell, Tatijana Jacobson, Asia Rawls and Kate Wolanin. Coach Parks will guide the Eagles in her seventh season at the helm.

SPRINTERS

Losing 400-meter dash MAC Champion Shantavia Williams to graduation, Danielle Clark returns following a freshman season in which she was a member of three victorious 4x100-meter relay teams. The sprinters will have to rely on a plethora of freshman coming in to make an immediate im-pact: Latipha Cross, Iesha Hardiman, Aaliyah McKin-ney, Rebecca Quaintance, Tericka Threatt and Mor-gan Yeadon.

HURDLES

Senior captain Asia Rawls looks to lead a team of hurdlers into the 2012-13 season after finishing runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with season-best 58:39 at the MAC Outdoor Championships a season ago. Rawls followed up her strong conference cham-pionship performance by qualifying for the NCAA National Champion-ships where she finished 23rd. Junior Shante Jackson will split time between sprints and hurdles, and freshman Vanessa Clerveaux will join the squad in hopes of putting up points for the Green and White.

MIDDLE DISTANCES

While Coach Parks does not have any incom-ing freshman for the middle distance group this season, she does bring in sophomore Marina Manjon-Rivadulla who hails from Barcelona, Spain after attending Escola Uni-versity in her native land. EMU returns a pair of veterans to the team that will help score points in those races. Senior captain Morgan

Churchwell will race in both mid-distance and long distance races for the Eagles., Junior Brooke Sciullo returns after earning letters in her first two seasons on campus.

LONG DISTANCES

The Eagles return a surplus of runners in the distance events including seniors Courtney Calka, Lauren Lunsford, and Rachel Quain-tance. Quaintance’s sister, Rebecca Quain-tance, joins this year’s team as an incoming freshman along with Amy Frauhammer, and Leah Heinzelman. Sophomore sensation Victoria Voronko will help lead the distance runners after winning two meets last year and finishing runner-up in a pair of meets as well. Cara Smock placed fifth in two events last year and will look to continue to score for the Eagles this season. Eastern also brings

in transfer Kayla Pfund who has competed as a NJCAA All-American and Academic All-American the past two seasons.

JUMPS

Senior captain Tatijana Jacobson is looking for a huge final season in the high jump. After coming in as a transfer from Bowling Green last year, Jacobson won her exclusive event at three meets including a personal-best 5-08.75 (approximately 1.79 meters) leap to victory at the Len Paddock Invitational. Junior Tiara Oates returns in the long jump, and sophomore Ebony Mundy is back for the triple jump with three top-five finishes last year. A trio of freshman in Makeda De-

Bardelaben, Laila Foster and Melanie Hill will accompany the three returners.

POLE VAULT

Senior Meghan Powers is the lone return-ing vaulter for the Eagles after finishing runner-up in last year’s MAC Indoor Cham-pionships where she jumped a career-best 3.85 meters. Joining Powers will be redshirt freshman Rae Briggs along with true fresh-man Alysha Newman and Ellie Braidic.

THROWS

The EMU throwers are an extremely young and small group with only two sophomores and a freshman focusing on the throwing events. Lydia Gomez-Diaz started her career at Eastern off on the right foot with one win

and four runner-up finishes during her freshman year a season ago. One of those runner-up finishes came at the MAC Outdoor Champi-onships where Diaz tossed a career-best 58.17 meters in the hammer throw. Sopho-more Adrienne Waisner is the other returning thrower, winning the shot put in her EMU debut with a 11.78-meter throw at the Eagle/Rocket Holiday Meet last season. The lone freshman in the group will be Toronto, Ontario native Brittany Crew. MULTIS

Junior captain Kate Wolanin will compete in multiple events throughout the season for the Green and White. Last year, a fourth-place finish in the high jump helped Wolanin secure vic-tory in the pentathlon at the MAC Indoor Championships. Wolanin will not only compete in jumping events, but she will also compete in running events such as the 60-meter hurdles and throwing events like the shot put. Aside from Wolanin, look for Asia Rawls and Shante Jackson to split time running both hurdles and sprints.

Enrollment Profile With nearly 23,000 students, EMU provides a rich learning environment for the university community. The University currently has approximately 18,000 undergraduates and 5,000 graduate students. Our students represent 45 states and 93 foreign coun-tries. Of undergraduate students, 72 percent are full time and 57 percent are women. The most popular majors are education, business, social sciences and history, science and engineering, English, and the health professions. EMU’s undergraduate population is approximately 65 percent white; 21 percent black; 2 percent international; 2.5 percent Asian-American; 2 percent Hispanic, 0.5 percent Native-American, and 7 percent not answered (i.e. elected not to respond to this inquiry). Eastern Michigan offers a number of special academic programs to help students succeed. These include the Honors College; the Holman Learn-ing Center; distance learning; accelerated format programs; online, weekend and evening programs and courses; American Humanics certification; the World College Study Abroad Tours; a specialized master’s degree program for corporations offered on site; a double master’s degree; online technologies for education and training through the Centers for Corporate Training; and EMU Worldwide. With more than 200 academic and social orga-nizations, an extensive intramural sports program, 21 NCAA Division I-A sports and numerous cultural activities from which to choose, EMU students have diverse opportunities to become involved in campus life. Students’ on-campus housing choices range from traditional dormitory-style rooms to apart-ments and include living/learning center options.

Where We’re Located Eastern Michigan University is located in historic Ypsilanti, seven miles east of Ann Arbor, 40 miles west of Detroit and just 20 minutes from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. It is an area rich in academic, research, technological and recreational resources. The University also has sites in Livonia, Jackson, Traverse City, Flint, Detroit and Monroe. EMU’s 800 plus-acre main campus of scenic flora and wooded areas includes 18 miles of walkways and jogging trails and has 122 buildings throughout the academic and athletic campuses. Eagle Crest – Eastern Michigan’s conference center, golf course and resort – is located on the banks of nearby Ford Lake. Recently named “A Cool City,” by Michigan’s Governor Jennifer Granholm, Ypsilanti plays a leading role in industry and education. The city and the University have forged close ties that have lasted 160 years.

What Makes Us Unique In 1849, with the passage of Act No. 138, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Michigan formally paved the way for the establishment of Michigan State Normal School, with the exclu-sive purposes of instructing persons in the art of teaching; providing a good common school education; and giving instruction in the mechanic arts, husbandry, agricultural chemistry and the laws of the United States. Since its inception, Eastern Michigan, first as a Normal School, then as a College and finally as a Uni-versity, has grown and developed to respond to the ever-changing needs of society. Over the years, EMU has educated thousands of sons and daughters of Michigan, the nation, and the world. The University currently serves nearly 22,000 students who are pursuing undergraduate, graduate, specialist, doctoral and certificate degrees in the arts, sciences and professions. In all, more than 200 majors, minors and concentrations are delivered through the University’s Colleges of Arts and Sciences; Business; Education; Health and Human Services; Technology, and its graduate school. Eastern Michigan’s exceptional faculty, students and alumni include CEOs from major businesses; a National Student Teacher of the Year, National Teacher of the Year, numerous Fulbright Scholars and Milken Family Foundation National Educators award winners; and several Michigan Teachers of the Year. EMU is regularly recognized by national publications for its excellence, diversity, and commitment to applied education.

Faculty/Staff Eastern Michigan University employs 689 full-time faculty and 1,100 staff members. Ninety-four percent of EMU professors have doctoral degrees or terminal degrees in their field. The student to faculty ratio is 19:1. Faculty work closely with students, and many involve students in their research. In 2009, the Uni-versity celebrated its 29th annual Undergraduate Symposium; a benchmark program for undergradu-ate research.

Community Outreach Eastern Michigan is making an impact nationally by channeling its academic research as a means of solving real-world problems. EMU currently has 14 research institutes and centers that focus on com-munity building and civic engagement, quality, com-munity and regional development, small business development, geospatial education, textiles, export assistance and product development. EMU is well known for merging theory and practice for the benefit of the community. Applied research leads to new knowledge, new jobs and new business. Annually, the university receives about $15 million in revenues for sponsored research and community service activities.

The Alumni Association Representing more than 142,000 alumni and friends, the Alumni Association sponsors social and service-related programs for more than 20 geographically-based and special-interest alumni chapters.

EMU’s Economic Impact Since its founding in 1849, Eastern Michigan has provided quality services to the residents of Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, the State of Michigan and other states and nations. EMU’s total impact on the Michigan economy of an estimated $3 billion annually reflects a return of more than $30 for each dollar received from the state. The University’s total impact on the Michigan economy results in a contribution of $115 million in state tax revenue. Thus, EMU’s impact on state government tax revenue is $1.25 in taxes for each dollar received from the state.

Mission Statement Eastern Michigan University is com-mitted to excellence in teaching through traditional and innovative approaches, the extension of knowledge through basic and applied research, and creative and artistic expression. Building on a proud tradition of na-tional leadership in the preparation of teach-ers, we maximize educational opportunities and personal and professional growth for students from diverse backgrounds through an array of baccalaureate, master’s and doc-

toral programs. We strive to provide a student-focused learning environment that enhances the lives of students and positively impacts the community. We extend our commitment beyond the campus boundaries to the wider community through service initiatives, and public and private partnerships of mutual interest addressing local, regional, national and international opportunities and challenges.

Our History When the state of Michigan was just 12 years old, Michigan State Normal School was designated by the state legislature as the first institution to educate teachers to serve the public schools. The University thus began, somewhat humbly, as the sixth teacher education institution in the nation. A campus that today comprises more than 800 acres was once a four-acre plot with one building and two programs of study – a classical course and an English Course. The school’s name has changed several times – to Michigan State Normal College in 1899; to Eastern Michigan College in 1956; and finally to Eastern Michigan University in 1959. During its first 100 years, the institution certified thousands of teachers and developed the broad-based curricula that ultimately prepared it for university status. Within that new university, three colleges emerged: Education, Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School. The University has since expanded three more times; adding the College of Business in 1964, the College of Health and Human Services in 1975 and the College of Technology in 1980. More recently Eastern Michigan has developed Extended Programs that include Continuing Education, the Centers for Corporate Training, the World College and numerous community-focused institutes. The University has enhanced its learning environment through structural initiatives during the past several years. Recent construction includes the Terrestrial and Aquatic Research Facility (1998), the Convocation Center (1998), the Bruce T. Halle Library (1998), the John W. Porter College of Educa-tion Building (1999), the Everett L. Marshall College of Health and Human Services Building (2000), the Village residence hall (2001), University House (2003) and the Student Center (2006).

The City of Ypsilanti Ypsilanti is a city in Washtenaw County with a population of 22,362. Originally a trading post established in 1809 by Gabriel Godfroy, a French-Canadian fur trader from Montreal, a permanent settlement was established on the east side of the Huron River in 1823 by Major Thomas Woodruff. It was incorporated into the Territory of Michigan as the village Woodruff’s Grove. A separate com-munity a short distance away on the west side of the river was established in 1825 under the name “Ypsilanti”, after Demetrius Ypsilanti, a hero in the Greek War of Independence. Woodruff’s Grove changed its name to Ypsilanti in 1829, and the two communities eventually merged. Henry Ford and the automotive industry came to Ypsilanti in the 1930s and beautiful Ford Lake was created to generate hydroelectric power for the manufacturing plants. During World War II, Ypsilanti became home to the Willow Run Bomber Plant, a factory that would employ 100,000 work-ers.

Entering her fourth year as the presi-dent of Eastern Michigan University, Dr. Susan W. Martin has made a sig-nificant impact on the campus in her short time in Ypsilanti. Named the 22nd president of EMU May 14, 2008, she is the first female president in EMU’s 161-year history. Martin officially took office July 7, 2008. Since joining EMU she has led the institution in two consecutive years of enrollment growth, kept tuition, room and board at 0% increase for 2010-11, enhanced the quality of education by investing in hiring new faculty, and en-hanced the living and learning facilities by making $195M in capital improve-ments to the campus. “I am thrilled to be chosen for the honor of leading this great University, which has a strong history of excellent education and a bright future,” said Martin. During her inaugural address Martin set fourth an ambitious vision for the university. The goals included build-

ing on the pillars of academic excellence, refreshing alumni relationships, comprehensive fundraising and earning the public’s trust. Under Martin’s guid-ance in 2008, EMU was again recognized as a “Best Midwestern College” by The Princeton Review for the sixth straight year. Additionally, for the fifth consecutive year, The Princeton Review recognized Eastern’s College of Business as one of the “Best 296 Busi-ness Schools” in the nation. Eastern Michigan also was awarded a 2009 Michigan Historic Preservation Net-work’s (MHPN) Government/Institutional Award for its preservation of the Univer-sity’s core historic campus. Prior to coming to EMU, Mar-tin was the provost and vice-chancellor of academic affairs at the University of Michigan-

Dearborn. The majority of Martin’s higher edu-cation career was at Grand Valley State University, where she taught and pub-lished as a professor of accounting and taxation. Martin served as director of the master of taxation program, direc-tor of international business programs, and chair of the accounting and taxa-

tion department. In June 2001, Martin joined the GVSU provost’s office and served in roles as assistant, associate, and executive asso-ciate vice president of academic affairs. One of her major duties in that office was to help manage the $154 million budget for the Academic Affairs Divi-sion. Before GVSU, Martin was deputy state treasurer for the Bureau of Local Gov-ernment Services for Michigan from June 1981-June 1984. She also was the commissioner of revenue for the state of Michigan from 1985-1988. Martin received her doctoral degree in accounting from Michigan State University in 1988 and her master’s de-gree in accounting from MSU in 1976. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University in 1971. In 2009, Martin received the MSU Department of Accounting and Infor-mation Systems Alumna of the Year Award. Martin is a member of the boards of directors of the Michigan Educational Trust as well as Ann Arbor SPARK, a non-profit organization that seeks to bring businesses to the Ann Arbor area. She is married to Dr. Larry Martin, professor of economics at Michigan State University, and has three children and two grandchildren.

The mark of an exceptional athletics program is the progress that is made each year. And under the leadership of athletics direc-tor Dr. Derrick Gragg, the Eastern Michigan University department of athletics has turned in successful campaigns in each of his first five years at the helm. route to a second place finish in the Reese Tro-phy standings. Eastern continued to excel in 2009-10 with a trio of MAC team titles, 30 individual MAC Cham-pionships and 60 student-athletes named to the All-MAC teams. Gragg also helped spearhead the construction of EMU’s $3.9 million multi-purpose indoor athletic practice facility located near the north end of Rynearson Stadium. The 2010-11 season proved to be another record-setting campaign for EMU Athletics. The women’s outdoor track and field team won in 11 years to go along with the men’s cross country team capturing its 15 MAC crown. The Eagles finished near the top in the battle for the Mid-American Conference all-sports championships. The women’s athletic program turned in third place showing in the race for the Jacoby Trophy, while the men’s athletic program turned in its fifth consecutive top five finish in the battle for the Reese Trophy. The 2011-12 fall and winter revenue-gener-ating sports programs had a banner season, ranking as the third-best combined winning percentage for the football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball programs since joining the MAC in the 1976-77 academic year. Eastern posted a .593 winning percentage during the 2011-12 season between the four revenue-generating sports, while coming out victorious in 62.50 percent of their MAC tilts which ranks first in its history. In total, the Green and White won a pair of MAC titles during the 2011-12 campaign in men’s cross country and swimming, while claiming the MAC West Division crowns in both men’s and women’s basketball. Additonally, four of EMU’s top six athletic

The Eastern Michigan University Office of Athletics Compliance is committed to a com-prehensive compliance program that educates student-athletes, prospective student-athletes, institutional employees, community members and boosters about the importance of adhering to NCAA, Mid-American Conference and institu-tional rules. The commitment to compliance en-sures institutional control over the department of athletics. The existence of a successful com-pliance program depends on the willingness of coaches, administrators, staff, student-athletes and boosters to be cognizant of NCAA, MAC and institutional rules.

WHAT IS COMPLIANCE? At Eastern Michigan University, the Office of Compliance works within the department of athletics and the University to ensure EMU’s compliance with all applicable NCAA, MAC and institutional rules. In doing so, the compliance office is charged with the following tasks:

Educating administrators, coaches, staff, •prospective student-athletes, current stu-dent-athletes and boosters about NCAA, MAC and institutional rules;Developing monitoring systems to ensure •compliance with NCAA, MAC and institu-tional rules (e.g., recruiting, academic eli-gibility, financial aid, awards and benefits, amateurism and agents);Investigating and reporting violations of •NCAA, MAC and institutional rules.

ARE YOU A BOOSTER? You are a booster if you are or ever have:

Been a member of a booster organization •that supports EMU athletics (e.g., EMU Ath-letic Club, E-Gridiron Group);Made any financial contributions to the •athletics department;Been involved in promoting EMU’s athlet-•ics program;Been a season ticket holder; or•Provided benefits to enrolled student-ath-•letes or their relatives or friends.

You can become a booster if you provide ben-efits to prospects, student-athletes, their rela-tives or friends and any of the following state-ments are true:

The relationship between the athlete (or •parents of the athlete) and the individual providing the benefits developed as a re-sult of the athlete’s participation in athlet-ics or their reputation as an athlete; The relationship began only after the ath-•lete become a prospect; The relationship began only after the ath-•lete had achieved notoriety due to his or her athletic ability or reputation; The pattern of benefits increased after the •athlete attained notoriety as a talented athlete.

ONCE A BOOSTER ALWAYS A BOOSTER. Once an individual is identified as a booster, the person retains that identity forever! This is true even if the individual no longer contributes to, or is involved with, EMU’s athletics program.

WHO IS A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE? A prospective student-athlete (prospect) is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade, students enrolled in preparatory schools and two-year colleges are also considered pros-pects. An individual remains a prospect even after he/she signs a National Letter of Intent.

WHAT IS AN EXTRA BENEFIT? An extra benefit is any special arrangement by a EMU employee or booster to provide a pros-pect, student-athlete or their relatives or friends a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA. Examples of impermissible benefits include, but are not limited to, the following:

Gifts of cash, clothing, equipment or any •other tangible item;A special discount, payment arrangement •or credit on any purchase or service;Loan of money or co-signing of loans;•A vehicle, use of a vehicle, or any transpor-•tation expenses;Free or reduced-cost services, purchases or •rentals;Entertainment on- or off-campus; or•Free or reduced-cost rent or housing.•

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES? EMU is responsible for the actions of its boost-ers. If a booster provides an impermissible ben-efit to a prospect, student-athlete, their relatives or friends, EMU may be subject to penalties from the NCAA and Mid-American Conference. When a violation occurs, regardless of intention, it can:

Jeopardize the eligibility of prospective •and current student-athletes; Result in the EMU athletics program being •penalized by the NCAA and/or the Mid-American Conference; and Cause you to lose benefits or privileges •associated with the athletics department (i.e., booster club membership, ticket privi-leges).

QUESTIONS? The above information is a brief overview of compliance and rules pertaining to boosters and their interactions with prospective student-athletes. If you have any questions about any NCAA, MAC or institutional rules, please contact the Christopher Hoppe at 734.487.3263 or [email protected]. For more information on compliance and boosters, please visit the Office of Athletic Compliance’s website at: EMUEagles.com/compliance

RECRUITING DO’S AND DON’TS Only EMU coaches may be involved in the recruiting process. Boosters may not make any recruiting contacts with prospective student-athletes, Boosters are prohibited from the fol-lowing:

Do not telephone, write or make in-person •contact with a prospect for recruiting pur-posesDo not contact a prospect’s coach, princi-•pal or counselor in an attempt to evaluate the prospectDo not become involved in making ar-•rangements for a prospect, the prospect’s relatives or friends to receive money or financial aid of any kindDo not visit a prospect’s school to acquire •films or transcripts in an attempt to evalu-ate the prospect’s academic or athletics eligibilityDo not have contact with a prospect, their •relatives or friends during any of their vis-its to EMU’s campusDo not contact student-athletes enrolled •in other four-year institutions regarding the possibility of transferring to EMU

Even though there are many rules prohibit-ing your involvement with prospects and the recruiting process, as a booster you are permit-ted to do the following:

Notify EMU coaching staff about notewor-•thy prospects in your area,

Attend a prospect’s athletics event on •your own initiative, provided no contact with the prospect, the prospect’s parents or coach occurs,

Continue existing friendships, provided •solicitation of a prospect’s enrollment does not occur.

The EMU Athletic Club provides vital financial support to more than 550 student-athletes at Eastern Michigan University as they strive for excellence on the court and in the classroom. Nearly 1,000 donors generously supported our outstanding scholar-athletes each year. Established in 1994, the EMU Athletic Club raises funds in three key areas for EMU’s 21 varsity athletic teams: annual-use operating funds, endowment, and facility related projects. Today, annual-use giving is the most critical area of support needed by the Athletic Department. These contributions directly support the operating budgets of our teams and help provide the most basic needs to our coaches and student-athletes, including comprehen-sive national recruiting efforts, out of region travel to maintain nationally competitive schedules, equipment such as uniforms, balls, nets, bats, and much more. Gifts to any of our teams, or to the Eagles for Excel-lence Fund (which will be used for the most urgent needs of the athletic department), are an investment in the future leaders of the state of Michigan. Join the EMU Athletic Club today and make a difference for EMU Athletics.

Student-Athlete Support Services Academic, personal and professional support are essential to college success. At EMU, Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) helps student-athletes reach their full potential. Our philosophy is to offer an academic support program, integrated with the University, that will assist all student-athletes with their transition into college. This all-encompassing support continues throughout each student-athlete’s collegiate career, until the day he or she receives a diploma, lands a job or enters graduate school. Being proactive rather than reactive, our staff does not wait for an academic crisis to occur. We gather important background information and build an academic profile on each student-athlete, assessing his or her needs in advance. Services provided through SASS include the following: programs that focus on student-athletes’ special needs, monitoring academic performance, providing learning assistance, assisting with registration procedures, assisting in monitoring athletic eligibility, providing priority registration and making sure that athletes are advised about current NCAA, MAC and University rules and regulations. Freshmen and transfer student-athletes encounter a major transition when making the switch from high school or community college to a university. These students, while adjusting to their new routines, receive extra attention and sup-port. College is not easy. But with hard work and dedication from both the student-athlete and the support staff, the student-athlete can have a successful college experience. The success of Eastern’s student-athletes hinges on their willingness to seek as-sistance from SASS as well as other University student services. SASS staff members continually refer student-athletes to the Admissions Office, Academic Advising Center, Career Services Center, Health Services, the Records Office, Financial Aid and The Holman Learning Center. Faculty members also provide assistance to student-athletes through advising in course selection and providing additional help with courses when requested.

Athletic Training and Sports Medicine The Eastern Michigan University Sports Medicine Department has a long history and reputation for excellence in the health care of student-athletes and the educa-tion of athletic training students. Founding practitioners Gary Strickland, Ron Venis and Dr. Wally Roeser envisioned a goal of first-class prevention, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for all student-athletes. Although the department continues to grow, its primary mission remains the same. The student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics receive comprehensive health care from an expansive sports medicine team. The Eastern Michigan University Sports Medicine staff is led by Dr. Tara Master-Hunter, Dr. Zoe Foster, Dr. David Alvarez, Dr. George Pujalte, Dr. Wally Roeser, Dr. Bruce Miller, Dr. Don Wurtzel and head athletic trainer Steve Nordwall. Additionally, the staff consists of two primary care sports medicine fellows, three full-time staff athletic trainers, two full-time athletic training clinical educators, five graduate assistant athletic trainers and the team dentist. Our sports medicine staff works in conjunction with various medical professionals within the community who provide nutritional, dental, vision and other specialized services for our student-athletes. At Eastern Michigan University, the philosophy of the Sports Medicine staff is two-fold: to provide a high standard of medical care through effective preventive and management programs, and to facilitate an effective post-injury rehabilitation process for a safe return to competition. In all cases, the ultimate well-being of each student-athlete is considered our number one priority, not only while they compete at Eastern Michigan University, but during their lifetime as well. The Sports Medicine staff operates out of three campus athletic training facilities in the Convocation Center, Bowen Field House and the Rynearson Stadium team building.

Sports Performance/Strength and Conditioning The main focus of the EMU strength and conditioning program is to develop the complete student-athlete. Everything that is incorporated into the training program relates to success on the court. The program is not just about lifting weights, but rather the development of all aspects of athletic performance. These areas include speed, strength, quickness, agility, flexibility, explosion, sports nutrition and mental toughness. One of the main objectives of the program is to improve the players’ agility and speed. The goal is to develop stronger and more physical student-athletes without losing speed or flexibility. With that in mind, our staff focuses on improving strength in the “Power Zone.” Abdominal, lower back and hip strength are crucial for an athlete’s success. Increas-ing strength in these areas decreases the chance and severity of injury and assists in strength and power development. EMU athletes are pushed as much as possible to prepare for competition. The athletes are challenged through physically demanding and intense workouts year-round. The athletes are also challenged during each workout with some type of mental toughness/physical challenge. We train not only the physical side of the student-athlete, but also the mental and competitive side. While everyone lifts weights during the year, EMU Eagle student-athletes will also condition. This places us as one of the best conditioned teams in the country each year. Our goal is simple: Be the best conditioned/most physical team in the country. A highly motivated athlete is a program’s most valuable asset. Everyone in the country works on developing their athletes from the neck down, but at EMU, our program strives for excellence both mentally and physically. Our staff works to develop long-term and short-term goals for success. We work closely with the athletes so we know exactly what they are doing and what they need to do to improve. Developing athletes is a year-round task for our strength staff. During the year, the athletes will spend almost as much time in the weight room as they do on the court. Strength and Conditioning at EMU is a full-time commitment. There is no such thing as part-time champions. EMU athletes work hard but have fun. The camaraderie and work ethic developed in the weight room carry onto the field.

Bowen Field House holds a special place in the hearts and minds of anyone associated with EMU as the venerable venue enters its 56th season of use in 2011-12. It was the sec-ond field house built on Eastern’s campus and was constructed concurrently with Goddard and Jones Residence Halls and Pine Grove Apartments during a period of great growth for the university. Briggs Field House was simply too small. Bowen Field House was built as the first stage of a full-scale physical educa-tion facility. Later additions would include a gymnasium, swimming pool, additional locker rooms and classrooms.

Bowen was named for the late Wilbur Pardon Bowen, a mathematics instructor and first head of the Department of Physical Education, 1894-1928. It was he who first established a teacher-training course in physical education. The 88,000 square foot building cost $1.25 million to construct. When it was built, it was one of the largest in the country including not only basketball, track, and baseball practice areas, but also facilities for outdoor activities like tennis and badminton. It also had indoor classrooms. There was permanent seating for 1,200 viewers and theoretically, additional seating capacity for 6,000. The building also included an 8-laps-to-the-mile track, a hard surfaced infield, a lounge, and a physical therapy room.

Bowen Field House saw 351 wins in its 43 years as the home of Eastern’s men’s basketball team. Cheering and applause echoed from the steal beams of the building leading a radio an-nouncer on WEMU to refer to the building as “The Old Barn” and the name stuck. Originally basketball court was located in front of the balcony and the baskets were at east and west

ends of court. The floor later switched to north/south direction in 1960.

Bowen has undergone several renovations. In 1976 it had its first face-lift, intended to increase attendance at major events. In 1982 it received a 9,400 square foot addition, new lighting, a new track surface, and improved seating, which expanded seating permanent capacity to 4,800. In 1986 it was further remodeled and made handicapped accessible, offices were updated, a two-story addition was built on the southwest corner, and the heating and air conditioning were improved updated.

Since the 1991 season, Eastern Michigan University athletic teams have gone by the nickname “Eagles.” The Eagles name was officially adopted on May 22, 1991, when the EMU Board of Regents voted to replace the existing Huron nickname and logo with the new one. EMU originally went by the nicknames “Normalites,” “Men from Ypsi” and various other titles through the years before “Hurons” was adopted in 1929. The “Hurons” first came into being as the re-sult of a contest sponsored by the Men’s Union in 1929. On Oct. 31 of that year, a three-person committee, composed of Dr. Clyde Ford, Dr. Elmer Lyman and Professor Bert Peet, selected the name “Hurons” from the many entries in the contest. The name was submitted by two students, Gretchen Borst and George Hanner. Hanner was working at the Huron Hotel at the time of the contest and was no doubt as much influenced by his place of employment as by the Huron Indian tribe. The runner-up name in that contest was Pioneers. EMU began investigating the appropriate-ness of its Huron Indian logo after the Michigan Department of Civil Rights issued a report in October 1988 suggesting that all schools using such logos drop them. The report indicated that the use of Native American names, logos and mascots for athletic teams promoted racial stereotypes. At that time, four colleges, 62 high schools and 33 junior high/middle schools in Michigan used Indian logos or names. The EMU Board of Regents voted to replace the Huron name with Eagles, taken from three recommendations from a committee charged with supplying a new nickname. The other two final names submitted were Green Hornets and Express.

The Mid-American Conference Providing leadership in education and diversity, the Mid-American Conference moves into its 66th year of service to the student-athlete. Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and devel-oped into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only 11 foot-ball Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth com-missioner in March of 2009. The league has grown its commitment to cham-pionships by expanding to six its number of neu-tral site post season events – football (Ford Field, Detroit), volleyball (SPIRE Academy, Geneva, Ohio), men’s and women’s basketball (Quicken Loans Are-na, Cleveland), softball (Firestone Stadium, Akron) and baseball (All Pro Freight Stadium, Avon, Ohio). In 2011, the MAC set a conference record with a 4-1 record in bowl games and won the prestigious ESPN Bowl Challenge Cup for the best FBS confer-ence record in bowl games. The MAC also tied a conference record for bowl invitations in a single season as the five bowl invitations marked the fourth time in conference history (2004, 2008, 2009, 2011). The five MAC programs that were extended bowl invitations included: Temple (Gildan New Mexico Bowl), Ohio (Famous Idaho Potato Bowl), Western Michigan (Little Caesars Pizza Bowl), To-ledo (Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grum-man) and Northern Illinois (GoDaddy.com Bowl). The 2011 season also witnessed Northern Illinois win the 2011 Marathon MAC Football Champion-ship Game with a 23-20 win over Ohio. MAC pro-grams were a combined 4-0 against Army last sea-son (wins by Northern Illinois, Miami, Ball State and Temple), while Temple had an impressive 38-7 win at Maryland (ACC), Western Michigan’s 38-31 win at UConn (Big East), Ohio’s 44-7 win over Marshall (Conference USA) and Ball State’s 27-20 win over Indiana (Big Ten). or the first time in its history, the MAC will have seven bowl relationships--three primary and four secondary. The three primary agreements are with the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl (Detroit, Mich.), Go-Daddy.com Bowl (Mobile, Ala.) and Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (Boise, Ida.). In addition, the MAC has secured secondary agreements with the BBVA Compass Bowl (2012-2013), the Gildan New Mexico Bowl (2012-2013), the Beef O’Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl (2012-13) and the TicketCity Bowl (2012). In its partnership with ESPN, the MAC is in the fourth year of its eight-year rights agreement (through 2016-2017 academic years) for football, as well as men’s and women’s basketball. The deal is the most extensive in the 66-year history of the conference. The agreement calls for a minimum of 25 events annually to be produced and aired on an ESPN platform including the men’s and women’s basketball championships, a regular-season MAC presence on ESPN, the Marathon MAC Football Championship Game and a minimum of 11 regu-lar-season football games. In men’s basketball, the MAC tied a conference record as six programs received invites to postsea-son tournaments, highlighted by Ohio’s run to the NCAA Sweet 16 and an overtime loss to No. 1 seed North Carolina. Ohio reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championship after tournament wins over Michigan and South Florida. The Bobcats became

the first No. 13 seed to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament since Bradley in 2006. The Bobcats also became the first team from the MAC to advance to the Sweet 16 since 2002. Ohio finished No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, marking the first time the Bobcats have been ranked to end a season. The MAC had a total of six men’s basketball programs reach the postseason in 2011-12: Ohio (NCAA), Akron (NIT), Bowling Green (CIT), Buffalo (CIT), Toledo (CIT) and Kent State (CIT). Buffalo’s Mitchell Watt was named an honor-able mention All-America by the Associated Press. In baseball, Kent State won the MAC champion-ship and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA baseball tournament and advanced to the College World Series in Omaha for the first time in program history and the first program from the MAC since 1976 (Eastern Michigan). The Golden Flashes be-gan the postseason with a dramatic 7-6 win over No. 2 seed Kentucky in 21 innings in the Gary, Ind. Regional. Kent State went on to defeat Purdue and Kentucky for the second time to advance to the Super 16 Regional in Eugene, Ore. Kent State con-tinued its dominance by winning the best-of-three game series over host Oregon to advance to the College World Series. In Omaha, Kent State opened with an 8-1 loss to South Carolina before defeating No. 1 seeded Florida, 5-4 to knock the Gators out of the postseason. Kent State finished with a 4-1 loss to South Carolina. In the process, Kent State finished the season ranked No. 6 in the nation by College Baseball and No. 8 by the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. A total of 18 MAC student-athletes were selected in Major League Baseball’s 2012 Draft – including Buffalo C Tom Murphy (Colorado, 3rd Rd., 105th overall), Ohio RHP Seth Streich (Oak-land, 6th Rd., 199th overall) and Kent State LHP Da-vid Starn (Atlanta, 7th Rd., 239th overall). During the 2011-12 academic year, the Univer-sity of Akron men’s soccer team witnessed sopho-more Darren Mattocks and junior Scott Caldwell earn All-America status as the Zips made their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA post-season Round of 16 with wins over Northwestern and SMU. Northern Illinois won the MAC Cham-pionship with a 1-0 win over Western Michigan, and earned an appearance in the NCAA tourna-ment and defeated Western Illinois before falling to Creighton. The MAC announced the addition West Virginia as an affiliate member in men’s soc-cer for the 2012-13 academic year as eight teams will compete in conference play. In wrestling, Central Michigan won its eleventh

consecutive MAC championship, while the MAC sent 24 wrestlers to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship. In addition, three grapplers se-cured All-America honors--Central Michigan’s Ben Bennett (184), Kent State’s Nic Bedelyon (125) and Ohio’s Jeremy Johnson (285). In men’s cross country, Eastern Michigan claimed its 16th conference championship, while the Eagles captured their 30th conference title in men’s swim-ming and diving. The 30 championship titles for Eastern Michigan in men’s swimming and diving is a conference record. Western Michigan won its ninth conference championship in men’s tennis, while Akron won both the men’s indoor and out-door track and field championships. Kent State won its 20th MAC title in men’s golf and received its 25th NCAA appearance. The No. 17 ranked Golden Flashes advanced to the match-play portion of the NCAA Championship and se-cured the highest finish in school history by tying for fifth in the nation. Kent State sophomore Corey Conners earned Honorable Mention by the GCAA. Women’s athletics continued to shine for the MAC this past year. The MAC had a total of five women’s basketball programs invited to postsea-son tournaments. Eastern Michigan claimed the MAC tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, while Bowling Green, Central Michi-gan, Miami and Toledo all received at-large invita-tions to the WNIT Tournament. The Toledo Rockets were the defending WNIT champions and began the 2012 WNIT Tournament with wins over Detroit, Cincinnati and VCU before falling to Syracuse in overtime in the WNIT ‘Elite Eight’. In volleyball, the MAC had a record four teams receive bids to the NCAA Volleyball Champion-ship and finished with the highest conference ranking in RPI in conference history, finishing sev-enth. Central Michigan won the MAC tournament title and earned the programs first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, while Ball State, Northern Illi-nois and Western Michigan each received at-large bids. Northern Illinois’ Kristin Hoffman was named to the AVCA All-American Honorable Mention as well as the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Volleyball team. Ohio won its sixth MAC conference title in field hockey, while Toledo claimed its fourth title in school history in women’s cross country in record fashion. The Rockets scored a conference record-low 33 points and won back-to-back conference titles for the second time in school history. Also in women’s cross country, Ohio’s Juli Accurso fin-
