The Doña Ana Reading Council, affiliate of the New Mexico International Reading Association, is a
nonprofit, professional organization which provides information, support and service to all in the development of
literacy and the life-long love of reading.

families in Doña Ana County
Our Program: Head Start is a Federal program for preschool children from low-income families. Children who attend participate in a variety of educational activities. Children receive free medical and dental care, have healthy meals and snacks and enjoy playing indoors and outdoors in a safe setting. Services are offered to meet the special needs of children with disabilities.

• Population DISNM serves: Dyslexia Institute of Southern New Mexico, Inc. serves people of all ages who are affected by dyslexia or dyscalculia (severe difficulty with math): elementary, middle school and high school aged students, as well as college students and adults.
• Description of program: Using a highly structured
multisensory program developed by the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital in Dallas, Dyslexia Institute of Southern New Mexico works with individuals of all ages who struggle with dyslexia. We work mainly one-on-one, or in small groups to build skills in reading, math and written language.

Esperanza Children’s Therapy offers specialized services in speech
and language, physical and occupational therapy for children ages
three to eighteen. The outpatient therapy facility is child friendly and
aims to provide a warm and welcoming home-filled environment.
Therapists work with children to reach their maximum potential and
attain their goals as established in collaboration with the family and
primary care physician. Esperanza Children’s Therapy supports
parents with their child’s development through individualized therapy
sessions.

NMLCRF charges $5 for an hour session.
We serve readers at all levels. The typical reader doubles his/her reading speed in 24 sessions. We first screen for visual acuity and eye teaming. The NMLCRF program uses templates to improve fine motor skills, bouncing balls alternating the right and left hands to improve gross motor skills, computer programs to build phonics skills and another computer program to lead the student to read faster and faster.

promotes literacy in 0-9 year olds with a primary focus on 6months – 5 years of age
• Please describe your program in 50 words or less: Reach Out
and Read prepares young children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. Each child is given a new book at health prevention visits and the benefits of family reading are discussed. Reach Out and Read is a national, nonprofit, school readiness organization founded in 1989 at Boston Medical Center, through a collaboration of pediatricians and early childhood educators. ROR is supported by both public and private funding with the National Center providing training, technical assistance and partial funding support.

• What population do you serve? – We provide services to children from birth to 3 years of
age. • APRENDAMOS Intervention Team provides early intervention
services for children birth to three. We offer therapy and consultation services to children in our community who are at risk or may have a developmental delay. We provide services in the child’s natural environment which may include the child’s home, daycare or community setting. We provide bilingual services in the areas of occupational, physical and speech therapy, family therapy, social work services, nutrition and nursing services.

El día de los niños/ El día de los libros is an annual nationwide
celebration of the joys and wonders of childhood and the importance of family literacy. Día's vision is to spread "bookjoy" by linking children from all cultures with books. NMSU celebrates annually by putting on programs for both children and adults.

New Mexico Lions Crane Reading
Foundation
A surprising number of children have vision issues which interferes with reading. The Lions Crane Reading Foundation which provides state of the art eye examinations for children, including initial screenings, follow up eye exams with licensed optometrists, and free corrective lenses when necessary. Lions Crane partnered with the Children’s Reading foundation on its First Teacher program at Valley View, Conlee, and Jornada elementary schools in Las Cruces providing vision services to all of the children who participated in the program.
