The CSLC supports language and cultural acquisition through a broad array of programs including Peer Tutoring,
Summer Language Abroad, and English For Academic Purposes. The Center also has a array of languages resources,
hosts language events, and conducts research to explore ways technology can enhance language acquisition.

The CSLC’s Language Technology Workshops offer faculty hands-on instruction on how to incorporate tech-
nologies in their courses. A recent workshop featured the top ten apps for instructors by Keah Cunningham of
Kansas University. These workshops are directed by Professor Hannelore Weber.

The CSLC has expanded its courses and programs for language learners, especially for students who wish to teach
abroad. Dr. Hana Kang offers courses in Second Language Acquisition, Language Pedagogy, and courses in
Teaching English to Students of Other Languages (TESOL).

Language TechnologyWorkshop: Overview of Technology
The CSLC provides a critical service to foreign language programs by offering language testing for placement,
study abroad, and assessment. Dr. Simone Hamrick joins the the CSLC Leadership Team and directs the Foreign
Language Testing initiative.

The Summer Language Abroad (SLA) Grant, funded by generous partners and donors, provides opportunities for
individual summer foreign language study abroad for undergraduate and graduate students with a comprehensive
curriculum of international study and proficiency testing. Dr. Denise Ayo directs the SLA program.

Languages Tables regularly bring students and invited guests together in a comfortable social context to practice oral
language proficiency and build community through conversation, culturally meaningful activities, and good humor.
The CSLC has language tables in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Irish, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese.

Every year the CSLC and the Fulbright program host Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTA) from a
variety of countries. While at Notre Dame, these individuals teach undergraduate language courses, offer tutoring in
the CSLC, lead conversation groups, and organize cultural events. Dr. Brian Ó Conchubhair directs the FLTA
program.

Peer Tutoring Begins
CSLC Peer Tutors provide individualized language assistance to all Notre Dame undergraduate students taking a
foreign language. CSLC Peer Tutors offer language students structured opportunities to practice both their written
and oral foreign language skills outside the classroom. Assistant Director Matt Getze directs the tutoring program.

The CSLC’s TALC Discussion Group cultivates a community of language faculty committed to staying abreast
of the latest developments in second language acquisition research. Assistant Director Dr. Denise Ayo

Halloween
The CSLC is researching and experimenting with how games can be used in the second language acquisition
process. Every fall, the CSLC hosts “Humans versus Vampires”. This live-action game asks Notre Dame students
to “survive” a vampire invasion by deciphering clues in foreign languages and completing other language-based
missions. Dr. Denise Ayo oversees this initiative.

The CSLC is partnering with Office of Public Affairs to provide trained instruction of foreign languages to under-served
students in the greater Michiana community. In the 2014 - 2015 academic year, the CSLC’s Fulbright Foreign Language
Teaching Assistants taught foreign languages and cultures at Perley Elementary.
