DO NOW
Take out a blank sheet of paper. Explain how the message would be
different if Darth Vader had said:“Luke, I am your daddy.”
Then, write a short message to a friend (about anything you want!) to convey either positive or negative connotations.
Objectives:
I will be able to define mood, tone and style
I will be able to find clues in a text to help me determine mood, tone, and style
I will be able to identify mood, tone, and style
Style
STYLE is the way the author uses words, phrases, and sentences.
The author’s
1) personal word choice/vocabulary,
2) types of sentences,
3) point of view from which the text is told,
4) organization of the text.
These 4 components will reveal his/her style.
Mood and Tone
1. Mood and tone are the feelings that are attached to a poem –a) the author’s feelings about the
topic (tone)
b) the feelings the reader gets when we read the poem (mood)
Think Pair Share:Which of the following emotions might you feel during a storm? Explain why.
Happy/pleased mad/angry Scared/fearful Excited/thrilled Mean/cruel
Bored/uninterested
Annoyed/displeased
Sad/heartbroken Calm/neutral
Mood and ToneAsk yourself:
○How does the author feel about the topic they are writing about?○How do I feel when I read the text?○What voice can I imagine this text being read in?
