1. What is a tropical storm?System of thunderstorms rotating around a core. (Not a part of a Front.)

Forms over warm oceanCentral low pressureWinds of 39 - 73 mph

2. What is a hurricane?A large tropical stormwind speeds of at least 74 mphHurricane season – June through November

3. What does a hurricane need to form?Warm ocean water - 80°F or warmer

Cooler air above the water.Wind must be blowing in the same direction and at the same speed to force air upward from the ocean surface.

Winds flow outward above the storm allowing the air below to rise

The Coriolis Effect creates the rotation

4. What are the parts of Hurricane?EYE:A tube in the center of the storm from

the ocean to high in the sky.The eye is calm and sunny.20 - 40 miles across

4. Parts of Hurricane (Continued)RAIN BANDS:Located outside the eye wall Spiraling bands of clouds that produce

heavy rain and strong winds.50 – 300 miles long

5. Why do hurricanes only form in certain parts of the world?

Between 5 and 15 degree north latitude and south latitude - need warm water – at least 26 C or 80 F.

Not at equator because the Coriolis Effect is too weak.

6. Where do hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean form?

Hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean form off the west coast of Africa.

7. What fuels a hurricane?Warm, moist air (low pressure) fuels a hurricane.

8. How does a hurricane die? Over cold water or land

9. What causes the most death and destruction from a hurricane?

Storm surges that cause floods

Hurricane FAQHurricanes can be over 50,000 feet tall.

The eye is calm because of the low pressure and the rotation caused by the Coriolis Effect. It is stronger in the middle so any wind that tries to get into the eye does not make it and becomes a part of the rotation.

Hurricanes in the Northern Hemisphere rotate counterclockwise. In the Southern Hemisphere they rotate clockwise.
