Nihonbashi, literally meaning ‘Japan Bridge’, was at the heart of Edo, the starting point for the Gokaido – the Five Highways – that connected the capital with the outer regions. The most famous highway wasthe Tokaido, connecting Edo and Kyoto, the former capital.

The town of Nihonbashi has alwaysbeen at the center of commerce and action – the now bustling Tsukiji Fish market was once here before moving. Nihonbashi is known for Japan’s quickest Seven Lucky Gods Tour, a walking of seven shrines in the area. Residents and people from all over Tokyo gather every New Years Day and make their rounds, a tradition in practice since the Edo period.
