European firms must innovate to keep or gain a competitive position in industries and market segments with high added value. Innovative design is an important factor in competitiveness and wealth creation. Europe traditionally has a strong position in design, which we must defend and further develop. For many mature consumer markets where technical developments bring only marginal improvements to the enduser, aesthetic and functional innovations in product and package design are often the key element of commercial success and bring stronger branding and longer lasting profits. But design is also a strong selling proposition for new emerging markets. Therefore, innovative design should be promoted for both traditional and new industries.
The DME Award is part of ADMIRE, a project supported by the European Commission under PRO INNO Europe. ADMIRE aims to raise awareness of the value of design management in Europe and to address some of the concerns of our design community. The DME Award contributes to this wider purpose by identifying companies which have proven successful in incorporating design management into their business strategy. Design is not only an art, it is also a science that can be learned and implemented in a systematic manner. The design community has a crucial role to play in this, not only by generating innovative design but also as messengers. Together we are setting the signpost indicating the way to innovation, but to reach our destination we also need to take this road together.
With warmest regards,Günter Verheugen

Within the scope of my roughly 15 years of experience with companies whose success is based substantially on the continuous pursuit of innovative design concepts, I have been able to witness time and time again that success with design is not simply to be achieved in passing and with relatively little expense, but rather is always based on a very strictly pursued and well thoughtout design management.
There are 7 common denominators of successful design minded companies: a policy of uncompromising quality combined with a willingness to design, the development of a value consciousness and communicative action, space for creativity, the courage to experiment and understanding of the customer target groups. Size or corporate structure of an enterprise play no special role.
Companies and organisations which have taken up these premises and put them into action, who have been continually successful with design management or which have only recently begun to enjoy success through design have been distinguished for the first time this year with the Design Management Europe Award. In the following pages, we would like to briefly introduce the prize winners to you.
Let these examples of successful design management inspire you!
Yours, Professor Dr. Peter Zec

In order to ensure that companies and organisations competing for a DME Award came from all over Europe, the project Partners – design institutions and agencies – nominated design organisations from countries outside the consortium. These Agents communicated the aims and procedures of the DME Award to their national companies and organisations, not only expanding the DME network, but also acting as ambassadors of the project. As a result of this collaboration, 21 European countries participated in the first DME Award.
the DMe awarD evaluation MethoDDie BewertungsMethoDe Des DMe awarD
What contribution does effective and efficient design management make to the commercial success of a company or organisation? One answer is provided by the DME Award, which for the first time in a crossindustry compa rison explored the question of which are the most successful and best managed designoriented companies and organisations in Europe. Only through their successful participation in a 3stage selection and evaluation process could the companies and organisations find their way onto the victors’ podium.
In the first stage, the project Partners and Agents nominated more than 200 companies to take part in the 2007 DME Award competition. Along the way, even more companies and organisations chose to enter the competition. As participation in the competition, the companies and organisations agreed to answer a questionnaire and take part in an interview dealing with design and manage ment, investment and innovation, market share and brand awareness. Further, participants were asked to look critically at their organisations and evaluate them with regard to designoriented goals and competition strategies, employee management and communication. Thus, the first 2
To evaluate what can be seen, rather than what one believes, that is the experts’ responsibility.Nur bewerten, was man sieht, nicht bewerten, was man zu wissen glaubt – darin liegt die Verantwortung der Experten.
index values were determined. In order to prove that a company or organisation ranks among the best in Europe, the claims on paper had to be proven. The final requirement was a presentation from each participant that was to be evaluated by internationally renowned experts. In the race for the title, par ticipants submitted presentations of their design philosophy, communication materials, corporate identity, product samples and more. The independence and experience of the design experts guaranteed a high quality evaluation which was incorporated as the 3rd and final index value. From these indexes came the final scores. In total, 18 companies and organisations received awards in 6 different cat egories: micro, small, medium and large com panies, newcomers and nonprofit organisations. The experts also awarded 26 com panies and organisations Honourable Mentions.
Even though all awardwinning companies and organisations have a distinct profile, the crossindustry comparison confirmed that effective and efficient design management is one of the key factors for success for both companies and organisations.

Last but not least, the quality of a competition is determined by the quality of the evaluators. Not only do the experts’ knowledge and experience guarantee highquality expertise, but their experience and unbiased viewpoint give them the ability to evaluate the design quality of the submitted presentations and communication materials.

“Light is sense but lighting is not sensual. Wires are bulky and not aesthetic, they restrict their day to day use. An obvious mission appeared to us, to think about a new art of living light, more emotional and sensible, bringing high technology to the service of humans’ pleasure. So wireless light was born, a lamp that works with LED!”
