Dynamic Leadership Academy ‘14
Hope is NOT A Strategy
Today’s Game Plan: What we’ll do & how
! Frame/set-up the issues…25 minutes
! Break-out…25 minutes
! Feedback/discussion…40 minutes
! Synthesis/Final thoughts
Hope is NOT A Strategy
Assuring clarity…definition of terms ! Performance…accomplishment of a task as measured vs pre-
set standards…seek to differentiate performance by “default” vs performance by “design”
! Values…beliefs/ideals shared by group members that shape group behavior…persist even when group members change
! Culture…norms of behavior & shared values amongst a group…taught to new members…encompasses Performance & Values
! Team-building…identifying & motivating individuals to form/join a team that stays together, works together & achieves together…embodies Performance, Values & Culture
Hope is NOT A Strategy
Why it’s important… ! The benefit of getting it “right”… • clarity…alignment…focus…team-driven
! The cost of getting it “wrong”… • confusion…multiple agendas…distractions…
individual-driven
! Outcome certainty assured regardless of choice
Hope is NOT A Strategy
Performance & Values…Issues & Challenges
High Performer/Low Values High Performer/High Values
Low Performer/Low Values Low Performer/High Values
Hope is NOT A Strategy
“A-Players” as defined by the research…
! Set stretch goals/adopt high standards ! Work collaboratively ! Embrace change ! Take initiative/”walk the talk” ! Use good judgment ! Display personal resilience ! Give honest feedback
Hope is NOT A Strategy
Values ! Key component of Culture • influences behavior & attitudes
! Slogans as Beliefs/“Slogans” vs Beliefs
! Reality: what’s measured is prioritized… • quantitative measurement of qualitative
behaviors
Hope is NOT A Strategy
Culture: 5 Rules for building it right ! Define in simple language
! Teach what it means…reinforce relentlessly
! Recruit those inclined to believe/align
! A primary filter for performance evaluation
! Your Values & Culture are non-negotiable
Hope is NOT A Strategy
“We create a standard for how we want to do things & everybody’s got to buy-in to that standard or you really can’t have any team chemistry. Mediocre people don’t like high achievers and high achievers don’t like mediocre people.”
Nick Saban University of Alabama
Team-building: where it all comes together
Hope is NOT A Strategy
Individual Agendas Rule
Avoidance of Team Accountability
Lack of Buy-‐in
Failure to address tough issues
Absence of Trust
Team-building: what gets in the way
Hope is NOT A Strategy
Team agendas supersede Individual agendas
Hold each other accountable
CommiEed to plans of acFon
Unfiltered debate & closure on tough issues
Trust each other
Team-building: what “good” looks like
Hope is NOT A Strategy
Performance Excellence via ”Tough Love”
! Banish empty praise ! Set expectations high ! Articulate clear goals & set goal posts ! Failure isn’t defeat ! Say thank you
Hope is NOT A Strategy
DLA Madness…25 minutes ! Break into your groups…5-8 per group • designated Spokesperson…speaks/reports for
team on experience/ideas, not conclusions • designated Scribe…takes notes that frame
team’s “answers”/thinking & issues/disagreements arising
! Questions…all will address same
! Unresolved issues/points of disagreement • record for possible use or future reference
Hope is NOT A Strategy
DLA Madness: Discussion Questions ! Performance…
• Coaching High Performance/Low Values players: issues & challenges encountered…what works/what doesn’t work? Are we hostage to their talent? What’s their impact on other players & the team? Why do we take/keep them?
! Values… • Can Low Values players be converted to High Values
players? If so, how? If not, why not? Does their High vs Low Performance status impact your view/assessment of them? If not able to convert them, what should be done?
! Culture… • Teaching & embedding your Culture: issues & challenges
encountered…Gaining buy-in: what works/what doesn’t?
Hope is NOT A Strategy
Moving the ball…sharing what we learned ! For each question: PO’B designates a response team
• Spokesperson responds for team per Scribe’s notes • Focus on the question asked…frame the view…
emphasize the what/why & how • Response to include unresolved issues/points of
disagreement
! Following designated team’s response… • invite additional/different thoughts from all • invite dissenting/alternate views from all • invite additional questions pertaining to issue under
discussion from all • PO’B “refs” debate/discussion…will look to keep it
moving & involve multiple “voices”
Hope is NOT A Strategy
Final thoughts… ! Hope is NOT a Strategy
! See Reality as it is & respond accordingly
! Make something happen
! And the biggest challenge… • leaving yourself open to ALL possibilities…
Hope is NOT A Strategy
What do all of these have in common?
! 2 + 2 ! 3 + 1 ! 10 – 6 ! 20 ÷ 5 ! 2 + 2 x 5 ÷ 5
