DIYA’S MISSION To enrich the quality of life of differently-abled adults by training them in vocational skills and empowering them to live a fulfilling and productive life;

DIYA’S HISTORY: Based in Bangalore, Karnataka, Diya Foundation was registered as a Vocational Training and Sheltered Workshop on 22nd March, 1999. In its 14th year, Diya provides training and sheltered employment to 48 intellectually challenged adults and since June 2012, offers supported employment to 7 intellectually challenged and one hearing impaired individual through Diya Innovations, a ‘for profit’ Social enterprise.

It is a joy to see our trainees make great progress and ready to move into supported employment. Our staff has strived hard to ensure the success of Diya’s training programs.

We acknowledge the contribution of our sponsors, volunteers, well-wishers and board members. Diya Trainees

‘EKTA’ a Self Help Group, began operations in July 2012. Mentored by Diya Foundation and with initial funding from Weir Minerals Pvt Ltd., three parents of our differently abled trainees along with nine under-privileged women joined hands to work together. Diya Foundation collaborated with Industree Craft Foundation to empower these individuals, provide a support structure for their families as well as initiate a future employment option for our trained special needs people. We would like to empower these women to be future leaders and entrepreneurs. Today, they are able to generate around Rs. 50,000/-p.m. We hope they make this a successful venture and can provide employment to five of Diya’s trainees by March 2014.

Highlights APRIL 2012 - MARCH 2013

Diya Innovations, a ‘for profit’ Social enterprise, registered in June 2012, is the employment and marketing arm of Diya Foundation. After Sheltered Training, job placements are offered to trainees ready to work with minimal supervision, in Diya Innovations on a starting salary of Rs. 1500/p.m. Currently, seven intellectually challenged people work in Diya Innovations. We hope to add eight more by March 2014.

The products made at Diya Innovations are of exclusive quality, on par with products in the market. Our dream is for Diya Innovations to provide employment to as many differently abled as possible.

OUR FUTURE GOALS:• To set up a Jewellery Unit as a new training option for our trainees.

• Diya has applied for a Community Amenity site with the BDA. When sanctioned, our plans for expansion can begin.

OUR CHALLENGES/NEEDS:• To raise an annual budget of Rs 30,00,000 for the Training Centre.

• To raise Rs. 1 crore towards land and building fund.

• To identify part time on-the-job training and work for Trainees.

• To source work for the data-entry unit.

• Find volunteers who can devote one hour per day.

PROGRESS

COMPUTER UNIT Suresh has achieved great strides in data entry despite a learning disability. “I came here on June 2, 2012,” he recalls with precision. “You can give me any work and I will do it,” he smiles. He earns a salary of Rs.2, 500/-p.m. and proudly says, “I give the money to my parents.” Steven and Preethi too, under training in data entry for a year, work quite independently and earn a stipend of Rs.1500/- p.m.

HORTICULTUREPhillip is being trained to take charge of the garden and is capable of watering and weeding without supervision.

PAPER UNITTrainees, guided by their physically challenged trainer Mr. Raju, recycle newspaper to make bags, bowls and bins. Prithviraj Babu fixes rivets and cords on paper bags. “Come home someday,” is a warm invitation he extends to visitors at Diya. Shafiq maintains the workspace and is an excellent team member. “When are you going to pay me my stipend?” he asks. Bhuvana, having crossed many a hurdle makes perfect paper bags for Adigas. Diya Innovations employs her.

“Diya Foundation has been a pioneer in steering latent talents into creative milestones. Glad to be a part of the movement and cause.” Team P N RAO

3M India has been supporting Diya Foundation since 2010. We are happy to see Diya Foundation grow from touching the lives of 30 differently-abled individuals to about 70 who are experiencing the benefits of the vocational training and support being provided.
