Our amazing staff work hard to make the season jolly and bright for all. They organize fun and interesting activities and outings. Our teens even get into the action by planning a skating trip for the younger children. And home visits triple in the month of December so we can make sure we can be there for parents and families.

There’s a beautiful holiday dinner for families with small children to look forward to, as well as a fun-filled holiday celebration for our youth and volunteers.

Our ‘Sponsor a Family’ opportunity gives our supporters the chance to make a donation to families, seniors and youth to help make their wishes come true. And the best part is how it embodies the true meaning of the season, with folks who have never met going out of their way to show kindness and care. It’s a truly magical program.

For ways to get involved in the Children & Youth Department year-round, please contact Sandra Costain at [email protected] or call 416.889.4335.

Here’s what our members have to say:

‘Every year my kids look forward to going to the childcare program to make holiday crafts. I look forward to it as much as they do’. Natasha

‘I actually have gifts to give, I would never know that if it wasn’t for Dixon Hall’. Jamar

‘Dixon Hall has the BEST people and the BEST food’. Matthew

‘Tis the season’... continued...

‘This is my safe place, the holidays are not happy for everyone…at the Youth Centre I can always be me’.Trevlyn

2014 Events Recap

Music for Life

Our 2014 Music for Life Dinner & Gala was a spectacular evening, which raised $180,000.

A very special thank you goes to Artscape for the beautiful venue Daniels Spectrum. We greatly appreciate the years of support from Artscape towards our Music School.

Special thanks also go to our Presenting Sponsors, The Slaight Family Foundation and RBC, as well as to all of our other kind sponsors. Your generosity means the world to us and the many wonderful young people in our Music School.

Thank you to all who attended. It was an outstanding evening.

Rebuilding Lives

Rebuilding Lives was a wonderful event held in support of our Mill Centre where guests enjoyed cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live entertainment and a silent auction. $35,000 was raised thanks to our kind supporters.

Invitational Halsall Golf Tournament

The Invitational Halsall Golf Tournament raised $50,000 this year for our Music School, Children & Youth programs and Mill Centre. A great big thank you goes to Halsall for 14 years of gracious support. To learn more about Halsall, visit www.halsall.com.

Dixon Hall/519 LGBT Diversity Event

Our Employment Centre teamed up with the 519 Church Street Community Centre this September to offer employers and clients a unique diversity event. The day consisted of an interactive workshop for employers designed to provide insight into the challenges faced by the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgendered community when searching for employment; and in the afternoon, participants were able to gain valuable feedback from industry professionals about their career paths and job search.

Canoescapes 2014 – A Gossage Art Show

13 beautiful and original paintings by our fabulous board member Patrick Gossage were sold, raising more than $3,000 for our Children & Youth programs. Thank you Patrick for your generosity and for inspiring us with your wonderful pieces of art.

Toronto Challenge

The 2014 Toronto Challenge was a great success! Together we raised $14,000 in support of our critical programs for seniors. Our sincere gratitude goes to everyone who participated. To learn more about the Toronto Challenge, visit www.toronto.ca/challenge.

At a time of year when many of us are frantically shopping for gifts for loved ones and busy preparing scrumptious meals to be shared with friends and family, the homeless men and women of Toronto are busy as well – only they are busy searching for a dry bed and a warm meal.

Most of them will not receive any gifts. Many will not spend the holidays with their friends and family.

Last year, thanks to The Shoebox Project, each of the 29 women at our Heyworth House Shelter received a wrapped shoebox filled with small luxury items like beauty and hygiene products, gift cards and more.

It was the first time in years many of these women had received any gift at all.

They were surprised and overjoyed; some cried when they were given their very own gift.

This holiday season, the women at Heyworth House will each receive another Shoebox.

And this year, both the men and women will receive warm socks, baked treats and toiletries all thanks to the dedication and kindness of volunteers Danielle Kay and Kevin of WeSell at 483 Queen Street.

They will sleep in warm, dry beds and be served a special holiday dinner prepared just for them by a catering company.

But most importantly, our residents won’t be forgotten thanks to the generosity and care of our wonderful donors, supporters, members, volunteers and staff like you.

Lili has been a volunteer in the Mandarin program for more than 5 years. She first heard about the Mandarin program through a friend who was taking Chinese folk dance lessons with a few of the regular members.

These days, Lili volunteers twice a month and for special events. She’s famous in the program for the delicious meals she cooks for 20 or more people at a time.

Marina, Coordinator for the Mandarin program says that the members love Lili and are constantly asking her what she plans to cook next.

Lili says she feels a great sense of accomplishment from volunteering and giving back to her community – especially when she sees how excited and happy the seniors are to eat her food.

The Mandarin program is the first place Lili volunteered with since coming to Canada and the experience has only made her want to volunteer more.

To learn more about our volunteer opportunities, check out the ‘Get Involved’ section on our website www.dixonhall.org or call Heather Johnson, Manager, Volunteer and Human Resources at 416.962.9449 ext. 225.
