The sign-up sheet is posted in the conference room. Come celebrate the end of Spring semester with your colleagues! Thanks to Hong and Laurie for organizing the event. The Academic Awards ceremony is on Tuesday, May 14 at 5:00 pm. Please let Beverly know if you’ll be attending. It is a terrific opportunity to honor our exceptional students. We will be gathering at 4:30 pm in the division office and walking over together. We’d be delighted to have you join us. ECC graduation is on June 7 th . One third of faculty are required to attend, and all faculty are welcomed. Please check with Maria if you are not sure whether your attendance is required. This year the faculty seating will be reversed so that the sun is not in your eyes during the event. II) Enrollment and Scheduling The department reviewed Spring 2019 enrollment in comparison to Spring 2018. Our efforts to improve enrollment and fill rates are working. Although enrollment is modestly down across the college, both fill rates and FTES are up in Anthropology! Between 2018 and 2019, we increased the number of sections by only one, yet overall enrollment increased by about 120 students and fill rates increased from 81% to 87%. Overall, FTES increased from 105.25 to 114.33, a 9% increase. The summer schedule includes the same number of sections this 2019 as in 2018. There is only a slight shift with one less Anthro 2 section and one more Anthro 1 section. Demand for Anthro 1 continues to be higher than for Anthro 2. There may be room to add a second session on line section if demand is high.

In Fall, Anthro 6 is being offered online in an effort to support enrollment. It can be shifted to a second 8 week courses if it does not have a healthy enrollment prior to the start of the Spring semester. Angela is considering a SER link. II) Audit List The department reviewed the list of classes that can and cannot be audited. They determined that all their classes can be audited, except Anthro 3 & 5. III) Curriculum There was no curriculum in Anthropology reviewed this Spring. Anthro 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8 are due for review in Fall IV) SLO/PLO Assessment Rodolfo will email full and part time faculty with reminders of the assessments due this semester. This semester, the department is assessing Anthro 2 SLO #3, Anthro 3 SLO #2, Anthro 4 SLO #2, and Anthro 9 SLO #3. V) Guided Pathways Cheryl Kroll shared the draft of the Anthropology AAT pathway with the faculty. She needs the department to review the sequence of courses and to make any recommendations about changes. The department should also review the other sections of the document, including the description of the discipline, possible careers, etc. The department needs to select one lead person who will meet with Cheryl to discuss any recommended changes. The division is completing all its AAT pathways by the end of the semester. The department reviewed the number of Anthropology AAs and AATs awarded over the past 5 years. The number of AAs have fallen from 8 to 2, while the number of AATs have risen from 0 to 15. The department will consider inactivating the AA. Students can complete the General Studies degree with an emphasis in Social and Behavioral Sciences and complete just as many Anthropology classes as with the Anthro AA. VI) OEI/Finish Faster The department reviewed the Finish Faster website and discussed the new configuration of the OEI course exchange. ECC classes will be posted on the site beginning this summer. Faculty who have had their online class reviewed and approved will have a special quality badge on their class in the exchange. All ECC online classes will be listed in Finish Faster. VII) Arts Complex – Anthropology Museum Design Rodolfo and Chris met with the Dean of Fine Arts and reviewed the current draft of the architectural plans for the new Anthropology Museum that will be housed in the Arts Complex. As the department discussed previously, we were given a choice between a foyer or a bathroom. The department chose a bathroom, although it is disappointing that without the foyer the museum likely will not be able to

borrow exhibits. However, the plan is to use the museum to exhibit our collection and as an event space for flex activities, invited speakers, Dia de los Muertos events, Celebration of Chicano Culture events, student club activities, etc. This function leverages the department’s strengths in event organizing and will strengthen the campus community and highlight the Anthro department amongst students and faculty. VIII) Department Activities On Monday, May 13th from 1:00-2:00 pm in the Anthro Museum Angela will be presenting a talk on alternate gender categories as part of PRIDE week. The Anthropology student symposium will be held on Friday, May 17th. Student applications are due this week. Blair presented the following paper at the Society for American Archaeology Meetings meeting in Albuquerque in April: “Down and Out at Dysert O’Dea” as part of the symposium Exploring the Social Order through Gaelic Castle Archaeology, which he also organized. Blair is putting together a proposal for a Study Abroad program to take place in 2020 in Trim, Co. Meath, Ireland. IX) Counselors Report The Career and Majors Fair is this Thursday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on the library lawn. We will have two tables. There is a Transfer in Spring 2020 Workshop on May 14 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the Distance Education room. The last campus tour will be to UCSD this Saturday. The Admit Reception is on June 12 from 2:00 to 4:30 pm in the East Dining Room. Representatives from the universities will be there to help students with the transition. cc: Dena Maloney Jean Shankweiler Anthropology Department Faculty Cheryl Kroll
