District 15-5A teams perform well in playoffsBy TANNER HOLUBAR

Tribune Sports Writer

The first round of the playoffs was eventful for teams in district 15-5A. Here is a quick recap of the four playoff games from last Friday. These games proved just how tough a district 15-5A has been all season.

Longview vs Lufkin:This game was a

rematch in the first

round, as Lufkin beat Longview 44-14 on Aug. 29. Longview pulled off an incredible comeback, down 28-0 to beat Lufkin 43-42. Longview was down 42-35, scored late and converted a two-point conversion to take the lead with only 30 seconds remaining. It was Longview’s ninth straight win after starting off 0-2. The Lobos face 7-4 Mansfield Lake Ridge Saturday in Tyler.

Marshall vs

NacogdochesMarshall narrowly made

the playoffs with wins against Mount Pleasant and Sulphur Springs in the final two games of the regular season. The Mavericks then faced Nacogdoches in Longview in the first round of the playoffs and won 67-42. It was the Mavericks’ highest point total of the season, and the sixth time this season in which Marshall scored at least 50 points.

The Mavericks face 8-3 South Oak Cliff, who beat Lancaster 42-35 in the first round.

Sulphur Springs vs Ennis:

Sulphur Springs nearly upset the Ennis Lions in the first round, losing 52-47. The Wildcats led 34-33 after the third quarter, but the Lions scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to reclaim the lead. Quarterback Larry Pryor went 18-for-26 passing

for 207 yards, and rushed for 131 yards and five touchdowns. For the game, Pryor totaled 338 yards of offense and five scores. Pryor was one of the better quarterbacks in the district, and is committed to Texas A&M. Pryor also faced a future Aggie teammate, Ennis defensive end James Lockhart. This week Ennis faces 10-1 Mansfield Timberview.

Texas High vs John Tyler:

In one of the tougher matchups of the first round, Texas High lost to 9-2 John Tyler 58-23 in Longview. The Tigers held a 17-7 lead after the first quarter, but were outscored 51-6 the rest of the game. HALLSVILLE – Elysian Fields couldn’t stop Paul Pewitt’s running game in the first half.

In the second half, Paul Pewitt couldn’t get anything going offensively and had trouble stopping Elysian Fields from running or passing.

The Yellowjackets scored 29 unanswered points in the second half to come from behind for a 36-30 win overPaul Pewitt in Class 3A, Division II bi-district football action Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.

Kyree Ratliffe ran for 256 yards – 189 in the second half – and three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, to help propel the Elysian Fields comeback.

In the first half, it was all Paul Pewitt. The Brahmas punished the Yellowjackets with their power run game to the tune of 198 rushing yards in the first half.

Quarterback Isaiah Porter

gave Paul Pewitt an early 8-0 lead with a two-yard run, and he ran in the two-point conversion. Lamon Hillis, who finished with 130 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries, made it 14-0 with two-yard run late in the first quarter.

Elysian Fields got into the scoring column early in the second quarter with a three-yard scoring run from Ratliffe.

Paul Pewitt took a 22-7 lead into the locker room after Hillis scored from three yards out with 1:08 left in the second quarter, and Porter passed to center Drew Cox for the two-point conversion. Paul Pewitt attempted two passes during the game, both incomplete, and another two on conversion attempts.

Elysian Fields chipped into the deficit just more than two minutes into the third quarter with a six-yard pass from Ryan Storey to Brevin Manning to make the score 22-14.

After forcing Paul Pewitt

to a three and out, Elysian Fields threw an interception that was picked off byPaul Pewitt’s Jonah Hungerford. The Brahmas then pinned the Yellowjackets inside the 10 with a punt, but Elysian Fields responded with an 89-yard pass from Storey to Manning. Storey and Manning also connected for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 22.

Storey was 17-of-23 for 219 yards and two touchdowns. Manning caught four passes for 107 yards and the two scores.

The score remained the same until Ratliffe capped an 11-play drive with a three-yard scoring run to give Elysian Fields a 29-22 lead with 8:49 left. Ratliffe added an 18-yard touchdown with 3:06 left to give Elysian Fields a 14-point cushion.

Paul Pewitt took the ensuing kickoff deep into Elysian Fields territory with a 63-yard return by Trabon Betts. The Brahmas picked up their first and only first down in the second half and scored

with a nine-yard run by Lamon Hillis. Tray Hillis ran in the two-point conversion to cut it to 36-30.

Paul Pewitt was unable to recover the onside kick, and

Ratliffe was able to pick up 11 yards on a fourth down play to put the game away for Elysian Fields.

Roy Ibarra recovered two fumbles for Paul Pewitt (3-8).

The Brahmas were held to just 27 yards after the break.

Elysian Fields (8-3) advances to face S&S Consolidated, a 33-28 winner over Lone Oak.

Lady Tigers fall to John Tyler

By TANNER HOLUBARTribune Sports Writer

The Mount Pleasant Lady Tigers took on John Tyler last week to kick off the 2014-15 season, but the Lady Tigers fell 81-44.

Head coach Lorand Csoma said the Lady Tigers gave his thoughts

on the team’s first game of the season.

“We played against a very good John Tyler team,” Csoma said. “We were a little intimidated, and that ended with us not playing a very good game.”

Csoma also said he hopes the team won’t be as intimidated with other

opponents as the season moves along.

“Hopefully this was just first game jitters,” Csoma said.

“We’ve just got to move on, and get better and get ready for Paris.”

The Lady Tigers will be back in action at home as Paris comes to town.

Texas and Texas A&M could renew rivalry COLLEGE STATION

(AP) — Officials from the Advocare V100 Texas Bowl, which is scheduled two days before New Year’s Eve, already are treating the newly-hatched Big 12 vs. SEC matchup in Houston as a magnificent Christmas present.

But there’s one more big gift that might be suddenly sliding down the chimney in December, and one not only benefitting the Texas Bowl but college football fans across the Lone Star State starved for what was once its annual marquee matchup: the solid possibility of Texas vs. Texas A&M.

The Longhorns (6-5) of the Big 12 earned bowl eligibility with a 28-7 whipping of Oklahoma State on Saturday, while the Aggies (7-4) of the Southeastern Conference fell to Missouri 34-27 around the same time.

No matter how the regular season shakes out in both conferences, A&M

and UT on Dec. 29 in NRG Stadium is an option.A&M and Texas haven’t played one another since 2011, the Aggies’ last year in the Big 12, when UT claimed a 27-25 victory at Kyle Field.

“The regional significance of the bowl

is already compelling for fans, and then when you consider a matchup like Texas and Texas A&M, if that does happen, that would really be outstanding for fans, our community and the two schools,” Texas Bowl

president Jamey Rootes said.”

Fortunately Texas has gotten bowl eligible to be in the conversation. There are some exciting scenarios coming to light, and certainly Texas and Texas A&M is one.”

Source: Stanton agrees to $325M deal with Miami

MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton has agreed to terms with the team on a $325 million, 13-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations said Monday, the most lucrative deal for an American athlete.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Marlins hadn't publicly confirmed the agreement. The person said

the deal includes a no-trade clause, and Stanton can opt out after six years.

A news conference was planned Wednesday.

The contract tops the $292 million, 10-year deal Miguel Cabrera agreed to with the Detroit Tigers in March. Alex Rodriguez signed the largest previous deal, a $275 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees before the 2008 season.

Stanton, who turned 25 on Nov. 8, is perhaps the game's most feared slugger. He has 154 career homers despite playing home games in spacious Marlins Park.

Stanton wasn't due to become eligible for free agency until after the 2016 season, and signing him to a long-term deal was considered a long shot for the Marlins. They haven't reached the playoffs since 2003, and he was distrustful of the franchise's direction after its latest payroll purge in 2012.

Any kind of multiyear deal is a big departure for the Marlins, whose frugal ways in the past alienated fans, angered the players' union and made them the butt of jokes.

The last time the Marlins spent big was before a poor 2012 season, the first in their new ballpark. Their 2014 payroll of $52.3 million was the lowest in the majors, and owner Jeffrey Loria has been widely unpopular.
