CLOSE COMMUNION- VISITORS, PLEASE SPEAK WITH PASTOR BEFORE COMMUNING.Through the Apostle Paul Jesus gives us specific instructions about this special Supper.  He says, “Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.  For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself” (1 Corinthians 11:27-29).  So that this Supper remains a blessing and not a harmful thing to those who partake of it – we feel a loving, God-given responsibility to instruct and train all who wish to receive this Supper prior to their participation.  If you haven’t had the chance to receive instruction offered in this congregation or one of our sister congregations, we ask that you speak with the Pastor Olson before taking the Lord’s Supper. Pastor Olson is eager to meet with you. We thank you kindly. And we greatly look forward to celebrating the Lord’s Supper with you.

PRAYER FOR BEFORE COMMUNION: Lord, I am not worthy to be a guest at your holy table. But you are the friend of sinners, and you will not cast me out. This bread is your body, which bore my sins upon the tree. This wine is your blood, which purifies me from all guilt. At your invitation, I come rejoicing. Receive me, my Savior.

PRAYER FOR AFTER COMMUNION:Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ, for nourishing me in this sacrament with your body and blood. You have given me forgiveness, life, and salvation. Let me always remain in you as a branch remains in the vine. Send me out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

OPENING HYMN Lord, Open Now My Heart to Hear | CW 282

P: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ , the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.P: “When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, “Repent,” he willed the

entire life of believers to be one of repentance” (The 1st of Luther’s 95 Thesis). Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

C: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love. Wash away all my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions and my sin is always before me. Against you - you only - have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquity. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. (Psalm 51)

P: “Confession has two parts. The one is that we confess our sins.C: The other is that we receive absolution or forgiveness from the

pastor as from God himself, not doubting but firmly believing that our sins are thus forgiven before God in heaven” (Luther’s Small Catechism: The 1st part of Keys and Confession).

P: Hear, then, the word of the Lord: “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool” (Isaiah 1:18). God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son , and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy,” (Psalm 126:3). Let us worship him. (Sung to the tune of CW262)

All glory be to God alone, For evermore the Highest One.He is our sinful race’s friend; His grace and peace to us extend.

May humankind see his good will, May hearts with deep thanksgiving fill.

We praise you, God; your name we bless And worship you in humbleness;

From day to day we glorify Our everlasting God on high.Your splendor’s glorious light we sing, And to your throne our thanks

we bring.

PRAYER OF THE DAYM: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

M: Let us pray. Gracious Lord, our refuge and strength, pour out your Holy Spirit on

your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your Word, protect and comfort them in all temptations, defend them against all their enemies, and bestow on the Church your saving peace; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: (spoken) Amen.

The WordFIRST READING

Daniel 3:16-28

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the

blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”

They replied, “Certainly, O king.” 25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and

unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” 26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace

and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!”

So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.

28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.

SECOND READING Revelation 14:6,7

6 Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people. 7 He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

RESPONSIVE HYMN Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word | CW 203 VS 1, 3

Please StandAfter the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings:

GOSPEL READING Mark 13:5-115 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my

name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

9 “You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

After the Gospel, the congregation sings:

THE NICENE CREEDWe believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true

God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,

and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the

dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is

worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

P: Lord, our refuge and strength, we gather to worship and praise you for your ongoing work of reformation in your Church.

C: Lord, to you alone be glory.P: God of grace, in unfathomable love you pitied us sinners and sent your

Son as our substitute to deliver us from sin, guilt, death, darkness, and despair.

C: For your grace, Lord, to you alone be glory.P: By your grace you sent your Spirit to call us to repentance. Your

powerful gospel rescued us from rebellion and fills us with faith in you, the true and living God.

C: For saving faith, Lord, to you alone be glory.P: By your grace we are heirs of your eternal Word and trustees of the

inspired Scriptures, through which you proclaim your saving truth to every generation. By the Scriptures you overthrew the darkness of those who perverted your teachings and restored to your church the message of salvation by grace alone.

C: For the Holy Scriptures, Lord, to you alone be glory.P: In these last days, Lord Jesus Christ, protect your little flock. We are

like sheep living among fierce wolves. Satan stalks us like a roaring lion. Defend us from false teachers who twist your Word to satisfy the latest longing.

C: For wisdom and watchfulness under attack, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: For the noble character to search the Scriptures daily, hear our prayer, O Lord.P: As we celebrate the Reformation that restored your pure gospel to

your Church, we also celebrate our common confession of the pure gospel in Word and sacrament.

C: For this unity of faith, we give you thanks, O Lord.P: We remember the faithful confessors of this and former generations,

who have passed down to us your Word of Truth.C: For these faithful servants, we give you thanks, O Lord.P: In thanksgiving for the many and amazing blessings restored to your

Church through the Reformation, we now commit ourselves to your care.

C: Be our mighty fortress, our trusty shield and weapon, O Lord. Amen.

LORD'S PRAYERC:  Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom

come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE LUTHERAN REFORMATIONThe effect of the Lutheran Reformation of the Church on the history of the world can hardly be overstated. In fact, when US News and World Report ranked the most important events of the last 1000 years, the Lutheran Reformation placed second, right behind Gutenberg’s moveable type printing press. Historians consider the Lutheran Reformation to be of greater significance than the discovery of the New World (number 3).Luther was a monk, a priest, a professor at a little university in Wittenberg, Germany, but he is considered the third most influential person of the last 1000 years (1000 Years and 1000 People, Gottlieb and Bowers). God used his witness and simple faithfulness to the Word to change the world. As heirs of the Reformation, may our witness be as faithful and the effects of our witness be as profound!
