Volume 18 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 12, 2018

The Feast of the Assumption Holy Day of Obligation

Anticipatory Mass: Tuesday, August 14, 2018- 6:30PM Wednesday Masses: August 15, 2018- 7:30AM & 9:00AM

On Wednesday, August 15th the Church celebrates the Assumption of Mary into heaven body and soul. The feast is also a Holy Day of Obligation which requires all Catholics to attend Mass. On Tuesday, August 14th the anticipatory Mass is scheduled for 6:30PM and on Wednesday, Masses will be held at 7:30AM and 9:00AM.

This week I would like to share with you the reflections of the Assumption of Mary written by St. John Paul II in 1997.

Mary Is the First Creature to Enjoy Eternal Life

According to some Church Fathers, another argument for the privilege of the assumption is taking from Mary’s sharing work of redemption. St. John Damascene underscores the relationship between her participation in the passion and her glorious destiny: “It was right that she who had seen her Son on the cross and received the sword of sorrow in the depths of her heart. . . should behold this Son seated at the right hand of the Father.” In the light of the Paschal Mystery, it appears particularly clear that the Mother should also be glorified with her Son after death.

Recalling the mystery of the assumption in the Dogmatic Constitution of the Church, the Second Vatican Council drew attention to the privilege of the Immaculate Conception. Precisely because she was ‘preserved free from all guilt of original sin”, Mary could not remain like other human beings in the state of death until the end of the world. The absence of original sin and her perfect holiness from the very first moment of her existence required the full glorification of the body and the soul of the Mother of God.

Looking at the mystery of the Blessed Virgin’s assumption, we can understand the plan of divine providence for humanity. After Christ, the incarnate Word, Mary is the first human being to achieve the eschatological ideal (the term used to refer to eternal life in heaven), anticipating the fullness of happiness promised to the elect through the resurrection of the body.

In the assumption of the Blessed Virgin we can also see the divine will advance women. In a way analogous to what happened at the beginning of the human race and salvation history, in God’s plan the eschatological ideal was not to be revealed in an individual, but in a couple. Thus, in heavenly glory, beside the risen Christ there is a woman who has been raised up, Mary: The New Adam and the New Eve, the first fruits of the general resurrection of the bodies of all humanity.

The eschatological conditions of Christ and Mary should not, of course, be put on the same level. Mary, the New Eve, received from Christ, the New Adam, the fullness of grace and heavenly glory, having been raised through the Holy Spirit by the sovereign power of the Son.

Despite their brevity, these notes enable us to show clearly that Mary’s assumption reveals the nobility and dignity of the human body. In the face of the profanation and debasement to which modern society frequently subjects the female body, the mystery of the assumption proclaims the supernatural destiny and dignity of every human body, called by the Lord to become an instrument of holiness and to share in his glory.

Mary entered into glory because she welcomed the Son of God in her virginal womb and in her heart. By looking at her, the Christian learns to discover the value of his own body and to guard it as a temple of God, in expectation of the resurrection. The assumption, a privilege granted to the Mother of God, thus has immense value for the life and destiny of humanity. Take time to celebrate this important feast by attending Mass this Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.

Fr. Tim

STRENGTHENED BY

THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life, a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

6 WAYS TO GET

THE MOST OUT OF MASS

CALL YOUR MOTHER!

Ask Mary to intercede for you during Mass.

Pray to her for guidance & strength.

PRAY BUSINESS CLASS Sit near the altar.

It will help you pay attention.

GIVE GOD YOUR FULL

ATTENTION! Isn’t it fair that we spend one hour each week or more

worshiping God?

SING! EVEN IF YOU’RE OUT OF TUNE.

Don’t worry if you have no talent singing; the Lord loves to hear joyful noise.

BE ON TIME! Arrive at least

10 minutes before Mass to dial down your mind.

CHURCH WANTS YOU! Help out if you can!

(As a lector, usher, greeter etc.)

Do you find it difficult to pray? Do you have days when God seems quiet, or distant?

We know that we need to pray. That's how God gives us His graces.

It's how we converse with Him.

When prayer becomes dry or difficult, one of the ways to gain inspiration is by using a good prayer book. St. Teresa of Avila, an amazing teacher of prayer, always turned to a good book whenever she prepared to pray.

“But always when I was without a book, my soul would at once become disturbed, and my thoughts wandered."

—St. Teresa of Avila

Just like St. Teresa, reading the Church's treasured prayers and words of wisdom gives life to our prayer and keeps us going when praying becomes hard. It's the perfect way to seek Jesus, who is always waiting for us. Praying with guidance and inspiration has never been easier than it is today. There are so many beloved and powerful prayers of the Church that have been compiled by the faithful. Find a good one and pray… just pray.

“From Mary we learn to surrender to God’s Will

in all things.

From Mary we learn to trust even when all hope

seems gone.

From Mary we learn to love Christ her Son

and the Son of God!”

~Pope St. John Paul II

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Ss. Pontian and Hippolytus Tuesday: St. Maximilian Kolbe Wednesday: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Thursday: St. Stephen of Hungary Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary

St. Maximilian Kolbe St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe, born in Poland in 1894, grew up with a great love for Mary, who appeared to him when he was ten years old. At 16, he entered the novi ate of the Conventual Franciscans and advanced his studies un l being ordained a priest in 1918.

Shortly therea er he founded the movement that became the center of his ministry, the Mili a of the Immaculata. Through this movement he promoted consecra on to the Virgin Mary and use of the Miraculous Medal. His outreach was expansive. He founded monasteries near Warsaw and in Nagasaki, Japan, published monthly Marian devo onals in both Polish and Japanese, and produced a radio sta on.

When Poland was invaded by Germany in 1939 during the outbreak of World War II, Fr. Maximilian remained in the monastery, conver ng it into a hospital and shelter for refugees, including 2,000 Jewish people. He con nued publishing religious works, including a number of an -Nazi publica ons. The monastery was finally shut down by German authori es in 1941, when Fr. Maximilian and four others were arrested. He was eventually transferred to Auschwitz as prisoner #16670.

For the next three months, Fr. Maximilian con nued to minister as a priest to those around him, which resulted in frequent bea ngs and lashings. A er the disappearance of three prisoners, ten men were chosen to be starved to death in an underground bunker to discourage others from a emp ng escape. When one of the selected men cried out, "My wife! My children!,” Fr. Maximilian volunteered to take his place. For two weeks in the bunker, he led the others in prayer. On August 14, 1941, being the only one of the ten s ll alive, he was executed by lethal injec on.

St. Maximilian sought to bring peace and hope to others, and he resolved to love even in the most horrific of circumstances. He is said to have counseled a despairing prisoner with the words, “Hatred destroys! Love alone creates.”

St. Maximilian Kolbe was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 10, 1982. -Kolbe House at Assump on B.V.M. Parish, Catholic Jail Ministry of the Archdiocese of Chicago

Meditation Monday: Matthew 17:22-27 Saints Pontian, Pope, and Hippolytus, Priest, Martyrs (Optional Memorial)

Take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouth and you will find a coin. (Matthew 17:27)

Wouldn’t we all like to find the money for our taxes in the mouth of a fish! Jesus certainly surprised Peter with this unconventional tax plan. How easy it would be if Jesus stood beside us all day, visibly present and explaining how to meet every challenge that came along. How to appease the tax collector would be just the start! The truth is, Jesus loves to share his thoughts. He is always speaking to us. Or to put it in a more immediate personal way, he is always speaking to you. Sometimes Jesus speaks matter-of-factly about practical needs. He offered Peter a simple concrete (unusual) way to solve a problem. He can do that for you too. Try to lean into his presence and listen at different points during your day. Perhaps an idea will pop into your thoughts as you ask about an issue or need. Or maybe a friend will give you a suggestion that seems just right. Jesus might be speaking to you through him or her! Other times, Jesus speaks in more mystical ways, as he spoke to Ezekiel in today’s first reading. Ezekiel recognized that God was speaking to him in the violent winds, the flashing fire, the flapping wings, and the roaring waters—even if he wasn’t exactly sure of what the message was. It’s like that sometimes, almost like learning a foreign language. God occasionally does speak through dreams, visions, and even talking donkeys (Numbers 22:22-35)! More often than not, God speaks in more commonplace ways. He may make a line from Scripture strike a chord in your heart. A homily at Mass may seem to have been written exactly to help you. Or a conversation gives you direction, encouragement, or wisdom when you need it most and expect it least.

God can use anything. He is speaking always, everywhere. Little by little you can learn to hear his voice. Then, with practice, you will grow in understanding what God is saying and how he wants you to respond.

“Father, you know my needs and desires. Open my ears today to hear what you are saying to me!”
