Volume 18 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 15, 2018

Annual Joke Column

It is the middle of Summer and most people are still kicking back and enjoying the warm months. No better time than now to keep our spirits high with some religion themed jokes. Hope you enjoy these gems. Fr. Tim Three guys are fishing and an angel appears. The first guy says, “I’ve suffered from back pain for years, can you help me?” The angel touches the man’s back, and he feels instant relief. The second guy points to his thick glasses and begs for a cure for his poor eyesight. When the angel tosses the lenses into the lake, the man regains 20/20 vision. As the angel turns to the third fellow, he instantly recoils and screams, “Don’t touch me! I’m on disability!”

A little boy opened the big and old family Bible with fascination and looked at the old pages as he turned them. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible, and he picked it up and looked at it closely. It was an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed in between the pages. “Momma look what I found.” The boy called out. “What have you got there, dear? His mother asked. With astonishment in the young boy’s voice, he answered: “I think it’s Adam’s suit!”

A well-worn one dollar bill and a similarly distressed twenty dollar bill arrived at a Federal Reserve Bank to be retired. As they moved along the conveyor belt to be burned, they struck up a conversation. The twenty dollar bill reminisced about its travels all over the country. “I’ve had a pretty good life,” the twenty proclaimed. “Why I’ve been to Las Vegas and Atlan-tic City, the finest restaurants in New York, performances on Broadway, and even a cruise to the Caribbean. “WOW!” said the one dollar bill. “You’ve really had an exciting life!” “So, tell me,” says the twenty, “where have you been throughout your lifetime?” The one dollar bill replies, “Oh, I’ve been to the Methodist church, the Baptist church and finally at the Catholic church and . . . the twenty interrupts, “What’s a church?”

The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending; and to have the two as close together as possible. A school teacher asked her first grade class about the necessity of being quiet in church. A little girl raised her hand and responded, “Because people are sleeping.” An atheist asked his Christian neighbor, “Do you honestly believe Jonah spent three days and three nights in the belly of a whale?” The neighbor replied, “I don’t know, sir, but when I get to heaven, I’ll ask him.” The atheist questioned him again, “But suppose he isn’t in heaven?” The neighbor answered him, “then you ask him.”

Fr. O’Malley answers the phone. “Hello, is this Fr. O’Malley?” “It is” “This is the IRS. Can you help us?” “I will try” “Do you know Timothy Doyle?” “I do” “Is he a member of your congregation?” “He is” “Did he donate $10,000 to the church this past year?” “He will.” A priest and a congressman come up to the gates of heaven at the same time. St. Peter gives the priest the keys to the nicest efficiency unit heaven has to offer. Next, St. Peter gives the keys to the penthouse suite to the congressman. The priest speaks up claiming St. Peter is unfair. St. Peter responds to the priest, “Listen, priests are a dime a dozen up here, but this is the first congressman we’ve ever seen.”

The Prayer and Faith Committee is sponsoring the 13th Annual “CHRISTMAS IN JULY”

Toy & Gift Certificate Drive benefiting the

PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY TREASURE CHEST FOUNDATION

July 21-29, 2018

The TREASURE CHEST FOUNDATION allows cancer patients from birth to 18 years of age to choose an age appropriate gift as a reward for having the courage to undergo painful but necessary procedures. Smaller toys are stored in a Treasure Chest designated for children undergoing simple procedures like blood tests. Larger, more expensive gifts are given to children experiencing extensive painful procedures such as spinal taps and bone marrow aspirations. Currently, the TREASURE CHEST FOUNDATION comforts over 9,550 children and teens every month who are diagnosed with cancer and treated at one of the 49 children’s cancer treatment centers in the United States. All items would be appreciated to replenish their Treasure Chests.

Gift Certificates in $5.00 increments to: - Fast Food Restaurants - Video & Clothing Stores

Let’s join together once again in providing a smile to a child with cancer and make this the best “CHRISTMAS IN JULY”.

Thank You!

CALLED BY GOD

Today’s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the LORD to the prophet Amos, the “shepherd and a dresser of sycamores” (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out “two by two” (Mark 6:7).

These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized.

The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God “destined us for adoption” (Ephesians 1:5).

As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God’s living word. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Wednesday: St. Camillus de Lellis Friday: St. Apollinaris Saturday: St. Lawrence of Brindisi; Blessed Virgin Mary

St. Camillus de Lellis devoted himself to caring for the sick and became director of St. Giacomo Hospital in Rome. He received permission from his confessor (St. Philip Neri) to be ordained and decided, with two companions, to found his own congregation, the Ministers of the Sick, (the Camellians), dedicated to the care of the sick. They ministered to the sick of Holy Ghost Hospital in Rome, enlarged their facilities in 1585, founded a new house in Naples in 1588, and attended the plague-stricken aboard ships in Rome's harbor and in Rome. In 1591, the Congregation was made into an order to serve the sick by Pope Gregory XIV, and in 1591 and 1605, Camillus sent members of his order to minister to wounded troops in Hungary and Croatia, the first field medical unit. Gravely ill for many years, he resigned as superior of the Order in 1607 and died in Rome on July 14, the year after he attended a General Chapter there. He was canonized in 1746, was declared patron of the sick, with St. John of God, by Pope Leo XIII, and patron of nurses and nursing groups by Pope Pius XI. His feast day is July 18th.
