Starter – 5 minutes Match the keywords to the definitions on the sheet.
1.The Sadducees
A. “Doctors of the law” – experts in the Torah.
2.The Sanhedrin
B. Priests concerned with the temple not ordinary Jews. They resisted change, and only believed in the rules of the Torah.
3.The Pharisees
C. Supports of Herod Antipas and Rome, with the political concern to keep Herod in power.
4.The Scribes D. Supreme council of Jews, with 71 members. They ran the law courts but had to support some Roman laws to keep the peace.
5.Zealots E. Where Jews meet for worship on the Sabbath. Jesus regularly attended.
6.Herodians F. Helped to run the synagogues and highly respected by other Jews. Strict with people keeping the Law, they believed in both the Written and Oral Law.
7.Synagogue G. Deeply religious Jews, but they believed the Messiah would be a warrior to overthrow the Romans (not like the Pharisees).

“Doctors of the law” – they created extra rules based on the Torah (called the Oral Torah).
Zealots Deeply religious Jews, but they believed the Messiah would be a warrior to overthrow the Romans (not like the Pharisees).
Herodians
Supports of Herod Antipas and Rome, with the political concern to keep Herod in power.
Synagogue
Where Jews meet for worship on the Sabbath. Jesus regularly attended.

The Temple The magnificent Temple that was standing in
Jerusalem throughout Jesus’ life was built by Herod. God was believed to be especially present in the Temple, and sacrifices were offered there. Entry was limited, and the further you entered the more restrictions there were.

Draw a quick plan of what the temple looked like in your book. Use pages 33-34 Label it – headings only. Label on the “Holy of Holies”. Write what it is! Explain why was the “Holy of Holies” so
important?
The Synagogues Jews also worshipped in synagogues, which
were to be found throughout the Roman Empire. As with synagogues today, Jews went there on the Sabbath for worship based on prayer, psalms, reading the Torah (the written Law), and teaching including discussion.
