Thanks to all those who were involved in these events. You would have heard that Mark Wallace has resigned and I am continuing in the role as governor for 2017 – 18 with the assistance of the Past District Governors within the district who have shown great support towards me. Because of this, the conference for the next Rotary year has changed to March 2018 with the actual dates yet to be confirmed. The end of the month culminated in the District Training Assembly and the visit to the District by the Peace Fellows from University of Queensland. Whilst our Assembly was being held our own PDG Rowley Tompsett was conducting District Rotaract Representative training at the Rex Hotel in Canberra. RI President Elect Ian Riseley from the Rotary Club of Sandringham in Melbourne along with his wife PDG Juliet Riseley were also in Canberra for that weekend. Those Rotarians and partners that attended both the Training Assembly dinner and the Peace Fellows Dinner enjoyed the company of both of them. Ian was a great sport on the Saturday dinner allowing selfies to be taken with him for a donation to the Foundation. $295 was raised in a very short time. Congratulations must go to Garth Britton for running a successful visit of the Peace Fellows over the weekend and the dinner on 1st May at the Commonwealth Club. District 9710 presented $5000 to Ian Riseley for the Ian and Juliet Riseley Endowment fund that is part of the Rotary Foundation. The month of May will see the closure of the Rotary Club of Canberra South, certainly a sad chapter in the history of this club but most of the members will be continuing in other clubs within Canberra. See photos further in this edition of the wonderful Farewell Celebration Dinner held last weekend. Nominations for District Awards to be presented at the District changeover on June 25th close on the 19th May. If your club wishes to nominate for an award, please get your nominations in to the District Awards Chair Charles Hill by this date. All the information re the awards can be found on the District Web site at https://www.rotaryd9710.org.au/district/district-awards/district- awards-overview.html Do not forget the applications for both Model United Nations Assembly and National Youth Science Forum close at the end of May with planning for both well underway. I recently attended at District 9630 and 9600 in Brisbane with the CEO of NYSF and planning for the first session of NYSF to be held in Brisbane has started and the applicants from Canberra that are successful will be attending NYSF in Canberra and vice versa. 2016-2017 District Governor Steve Hill

The May edition of the Rotary Foundation newsletter was distributed recently to clubs and can I urge all Presidents and Secretaries to ensure this is distributed to all your members. We still need that last push towards the eradication of Polio and this not only includes more money but we need to ensure our members of parliament are aware that we need the Australian Government to make a commitment to this cause. By going to http://au.onelastpush.org/ you can submit an email to your MP to ask him/her to be a Polio champion. PDG Maureen Manning (aka Dragon Lady) and RIPE Ian Riseley at District Assembly. Rotary, and Malaria Awareness

One child dies from malaria, somewhere in the world, every two minutes.

Recent global statistics show that the annual death toll from malaria is 429,000 people,

of which 70% are children under the age of 5 years.

Sadly, malaria is a major cause of poverty throughout the developing world. The

debilitating effects on sufferers prevent them from working to earn a living or from

training or attending school. Currently there are well over 200 million new cases of

malaria reported each year.

However, there is some good news. Malaria control measures have reduced annual

death rates by 60% since 2000, and reduced the number of cases by 37% worldwide.

This has meant that an estimated 6 million child deaths have been averted, while

steady progress is being made towards the goal of eliminating malaria by 2040.

More good news is that the World Health Organisation (WHO) recently declared Sri

Lanka and Kyrgyzstan malaria free, and expects Algeria, Argentina and Paraguay to seek elimination certification during

2017.

In the SW Pacific area, the Rotary project ‘Rotarians Against Malaria’ (RAM) has been supporting malaria control

programs in Papua New Guinea (PNG), the Solomon Islands and Timor Leste since 1995 by providing low level

insecticide (LLIN) treated bed nets, and practical support on the ground. Since 2009 in PNG, RAM has collaborated with

the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, the latter by the two allocations.

This work by Rotary has resulted in a 70% reduction in malaria cases in PNG; an 87% reduction in the Solomon Islands

and a 99% reduction in Timor Leste. RAM also supports programs by researching ways to decrease the incidence to zero,

and eliminate malaria, island by island from our region.

One recent initiative is funding the next stage of human trials of a promising malaria vaccine being developed by

scientists at Griffith University. If the vaccine lives up to expectations, the next phase will be much larger scale human

testing in an endemic country such as PNG.

Individuals can make a tax-deductible donation at the RAM web site at www.ramaustralia.org and/or the Griffith

University project website at https://malariavaccineproject.com

Rotary Clubs in D9710 are asked to consider donating $500 in their end of year distributions to either RAM or the

Griffith University project.

DISTRICT CLUB NEWS

Do we know this man??? He seems vaguely familiar (Sourced from RC Bega bulletin - 20 April 2017, VOLUME 1416, ISSUE 138 YES! It’s none other than our own Noel Trevaskis returning to the fold after fulfilling other duties in Australia and overseas in his capacity as International Director of Zones 7 & 8. Great to see you Noel even if it was for a short time. Noel is one lucky man. After entrusting Sue with his passport on the train in Cornwell, he lost his backpack containing his phone and iPad. Oh my!!! He reported it but it wasn’t found by the time they had returned to Oz. Not long after, he was however advised by British Rail that the backpack had been found intact and it was duly sent to him. Noel sent an email to British Rail thanking them commenting on the honest people in England. The response in typical British humour was “that’s understandable because all the undesirables were sent to the colonies”. Very funny!

Please enjoy your May issue of District Dialogue and keep your suggestions, articles and club journals rolling in to [email protected] - Articles should be submitted by the 25th of the month.
