    Tape Heads

The Royal Arch Grand Chapter recently broke with tradition by approving the conferral of the Mark Master degree for Master Masons without requiring them to petition or join a Royal Arch Chapter. Some worry about how Blue Lodge Masons can receive a York Rite degree without the customary prerequisites. Others are enthused about this innovation. It shouldn’t surprise you that I’m with the latter group. Reminds me of the Tape Heads, the Grateful Dead’s fans who taped their concerts … legally.

I loved what Jerry Garcia said about this: “When we’re done with our music you can have it.” Other bands took extensive measures to protect their copyrighted material while the Grateful Dead went on to become the top selling concert band of all time. Think of that: the band gave it away and attendance surged.

Blue Lodge membership is a challenge and Royal Arch, which is a subset of Blue Lodge, is worse. Anyone can Google the entire Royal Arch ritual, so what used to be a secret isn’t any longer. Why make a Brother go through the extra time and expense to join a Chapter, especially when Lodges want for Masonic education?

I’m a Dead Head. I’m also a Royal Arch Mason and can attest that the Mark Master degree is full of important lessons … lessons worth showing up for. Let’s open the door and start the show.

Falls City #66 By WM David Hisel

I was thinking on a topic for discussion at our stated

meeting this Saturday, October 13th, and during the

process I was inspired to write the thoughts below,

which are followed by the agenda for this week’s

    meeting.

I am challenged by the thought of how do WE make

ourselves better through masonry, and I’ve thought of a

few different answers. Those answers are all subjective

    https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?and%5b%5d=collection%3A%22GratefulDead%22https://more-out-there.blogspot.com/

  • because everyone has their own definition of “better.”

So, I asked myself again, how do WE make ourselves

better through Masonry, and, while I cannot give you a

definition of “better” that fits with your life path, I can

give you my thoughts on the matter. There are

essentially two parts: the first is defining what “better”

means, and, the second is about how you as a Brother

can take part. On the definition of

“better”…hmmm…the best answer I have is to reflect

on what is your vision of your life so that you can form a

plan of improving yourself in order to achieve that

vision. That is the path that I find to be most helpful.

On the second part, what can YOU do as a Brother?

What can WE do as Brothers? The most powerful thing

that we do, the thing that has the most effect is to hold

our Brothers accountable! Let me sum this up by saying

that (1) we are all on the level, (2) we are Brothers by

choice, (3) we are filled with Brotherly love and

friendship, so, it should be a simple matter to (a) share

your vision of how you want to be better, and then (b)

ask for your Brothers to hold you accountable to your

    vision!

I am laughing out loud to myself thinking, “yeah, this is

easy to say, but…” and several excuses come to mind,

    “I’m scared to share,” “I don’t want to,” “I don’t have

the time” I’m sure there are other excuses, but, I’d like

    to address these three.

    * “I’m scared to share” – we are your Brothers, we are

here on your life journey with you. Give us a little

warning that you are sharing and that it is serious, and

we will endeavor to be sensitive enough to realize that

this is really important to you … I’ve not come across

any Brother that wasn’t helpful or sympathetic to me

when I have shared; i.e. I am divorced now, and when I

was first started down that difficult path, life threw

another rock in my face when my company re-organized

and laid me off. I turned to my Brothers for support. At

first I was scared because I thought my Brothers would

be judgmental or think less of me, but that didn’t

happen, my Brothers stood up on either side of me, and

supported me with kind words, offers of shoulders to

cry on, etc. I was truly touched by the sensitivity shown

by my Brothers. So, take courage and share!

    * “I don’t want to” – do you want to be a better

man? Do you want to make progress in your vision of

your life? Overcoming this obstacle could take a minute

or could take years. Basically “want” is a feeling that is

generated from your mind and powered by your heart.

I’ve taken a lifetime of inner reflection to realize that

the only person that can change a feeling is the person

that is having the feeling. Long story short, change your

mind to change how you feel.

    * “I don’t have the time” – I’ll spare you the

existential details about how time doesn’t exist. The

bottom line here is that by saying you don’t have time it

means you are not clear about how you can make it a

priority in your life. I.e. I want to help all my Brothers,

but, I have to prioritize what I can do for my Brothers

versus my family and work, and then apply how much

time I need to my highest priority needs first. I’ll say

what I’m thinking … family and work take a higher

priority than Masonry at this point in my life … I struggle

to see past that sometimes … and then I remind myself

that I joined this fraternity because I want to make it a

    priority in my life.

All that being said, I invite you to take a minute to think

about your life vision, write it down, share it with your

brothers, and ask “WE” to hold you accountable.

    D7 Road Trip!

The Wednesday November 7th visit to United Peninsula

Lodge on Vancouver Island is taking shape. United

Peninsula will hold its military recognition ceremony

that night and members who are active or retired

military are asked to attend in uniform. So far at least

four District 7 Brothers plan to attend (we can do

better). Side trips to the BC Museum in Victoria have

been mentioned. United Peninsula will hold its military

recognition ceremony that night and members who are

active or retired military are asked to attend in uniform.

Sannich, BC is on Vancouver Island … you’ll need a

passport (or enhanced driver’s license) and a ferry

  • crossing will be required. The Lodge is situated about

25 miles north of Victoria so a case can be made for

arriving a day or two before or staying a few days after

    the Lodge meeting.

Here’s what is included in the D7 Road Trip:

    The address of the Lodge

A list of the D7 Brothers who will be attending

Hotel suggestions and investigation of possible

    group discounts

A free PDF of the words to “God Save the

Queen” and “Oh Canada” (They’re going to sing

the Star Spangled Banner for us so it would be

only polite for us to show up prepared to sing

their anthems. We can practice in the car.)

    Here’s what’s NOT included:

Everything else. But if you want to organize

(and manage) a meal or some other group

activity the District 7 News will promote your

event at a generously discounted rate.

If you are interested in joining the road trip please email

    me at [email protected].

And remember, if we’re going to go all the way to

Canada to visit a Lodge on the first Wednesday of

November then we really ought to pick another first

Wednesday and go the much shorter distance to North

    Bend and visit Unity Lodge.

    WB John:

As you know I am from Hoboken and, if I had not

mentioned it, used to play in the park at Elysian Fields. I

am also certain I took my photograph there of the ships

passing by on the mighty Hudson River. As a side note, a

few miles up the river from there in a place called

Weehawken Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton in a

duel. Actually a lot of people shot at each other there.

(What that has to do with baseball I don't know.)

Alexander Hamilton was one of George Washington's

aide de camps. Aaron Burr was a traitor but a better

    shot

It would seem that people of good-will have moved our

    folks! May it continue.
