I would like to invite all of you to keep your eyes and ears open for events or accomplishments by Rotari-ans or Rotary Clubs so we can let the rest of the Dis-trict know about them. Let’s share our achievements and our ideas with our fel-low Rotarians so that our relationship can be truly

synergistic. One club’s pro-ject might spur another into action. Please send me your news in plain text, RTF, or Word format. Make the file name suggestive of the contents. Please send supporting photos as separate files with names similar to the text file. This helps me keep

November is Foundation month. Our Rotary Founda-tion is truly what sets us apart from other service organiza-tions. It allows us to accom-plish so much more than if the clubs and districts were oper-ating on their own. When you think of all the great experiences that have happened throughout the world with all the GSE teams that have traveled and visited around the globe, all the am-bassadorial scholars that have made an impact, and all the District Simplified Grants

that have funded out-standing service projects at home as well as abroad, we can be very proud of what The Rotary Foundation (TRF) has enabled us to do. Thank you for your giving and continued sup-port of TRF. There couldn’t be a better return on invest-ment (ROI) than to reach out and change our world and the lives of others. For more information on the foundation and what it can do, or to come celebrate what we have done, please

join me at the Tri-district Foundation event in Lake Havasu City the weekend of Nov 21. I would like to ex-tend a special congratula-tion to PDG Greg Podd of D5510, PDG George Wheeler of D5490 and Ann Fisher of D5500. They have received TRF Meritori-ous Service Award. For the details see page 73 of the November Rotarian maga-zine. See you in LHC. Yours in Rotary, Ken

Website. This is a Tri-District Event. All clubs should be represented. The Rotary Foundation is our Foundation and all clubs need to support the annual giving program. Annual giving is the engine that drives our projects. Rotary Alumni are the future of Rotary. We need to tap into this source so we will be able to increase our ser-vice to mankind. In many Districts around the world, scholars and GSE Teams members are encouraged to join Rotary. In Asia, when the teams return members are invited into Rotary and almost every team has at least one mem-

ber who joins Rotary. In India, recently I had the opportunity to visit with two former team members (different teams) who are Rotarians. They were on exchanges 17 years ago and with a month of their return home joined Rotary and have been Presidents of their respective clubs. What attracted them to Rotary? They were of-fered the opportunity to serve - helping others. As such, we need to tell our District 5510 Alumni when they return, that they have the opportunity to serve mankind as well and are welcome to join a Rotary Club in our district.

Simply stated, The Fund helps” the working poor” obtain a marketable skill through educational or vo-cational training. It is a ma-jor responsibility of the Fund to ensure the appropriate use of the tax credit monies received. TRVFA does not work as the sole entity in the above process. A positive outcome is dependent upon partici-pation by both the sponsor-ing Rotarian and his or her club. The Fund also re-ceives referrals from a vari-ety of sources, including Arizona Workforce’s One

source for both applicant and Rotarian alike. For your information, during the period of July 1, 2009 to September 9, 2009, 19 grants were issued totaling just under $40,000! During the period from July 1, 2008 to June 15, 2009, a total of 68 grants were given, total-ing over $132,000. A total of 87 applicants received over $ 171,000 for voca-tional training. The above results were generated by Rotarians and Rotary clubs by working in partnership with TRVFA. Your tax credit contributions have provided invaluable support for those most in need. Through your contin-ued participation in the tax credit program for the “working poor” we , TRVFA and you, will continue to

have a positive impact in helping those most in need! Perry M. Rattiner Tri-District Leadership Academy Class Member 2009-10 Secretary, TRVFA Past President, 2008-09, Chandler Rotary

This week I can say that I was formally introduced to what Rotary is like here in Istanbul and I was intrigued by both the similarities and differences. The meeting began in a similar manner to the meetings I’ve at-tended in Arizona: everyone shakes hands with each other and after finishing eating (dinner in our case) the president convened the meeting by sounding the bell. After that, however, things were uniquely Turk-ish. As with most conversa-tions, meetings or classes here, tea was drank by eve-ryone throughout the meet-ing. There was no song or

prayer at the beginning nor did they say any type of pledge of allegiance or na-tional anthem. I was the only guest and featured presenter so after opening the meeting I was wel-comed and introduced and then I gave my roughly twenty minute presentation. Being the first of many pres-entations I’ll give I focused mostly about the purpose and details of the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, what I’ll be doing while in Istanbul and my aspirations to get involved with pro-grams that their Rotary club and district sponsors. I also

spoke briefly about myself, about Arizona, and about unique opportunity I’ve been given to connect two places that very rarely would have the chance to understand each other. After noticing what teachers call “blank stares” during my presentation, I was quite surprised when my host counselor stood up promptly after I finished and retold everything I had said in Turkish! That moment of surprise reinforced the goal I had already formulated for myself: to give my final presentation in Istanbul completely in Turkish.

The rest of the club’s busi-ness was conducted in Turk-ish and with a combination of intent listening and transla-tion from my host counselor I learned about a few pro-grams that are coming up. I am planning visits to a few of the larger clubs in Istanbul and as I attend those meet-ings, I will follow with similar accounts. Best wishes to everyone in Arizona! And I must thank you again for giving me this opportunity for which I am so grateful. Best, Jessica

The District 5510 Founda-tion has been registered into the 2009-2010 Bashas’ Shop & Give 2009-2010 program.

Bashas’ provides a check in the April 2010 timeframe for 1% of all purchases cred-ited to a qualified Tax Ex-empt entity during the Sep 2009 through March 2010 timeframe. Our Rotary Inter-national District 5510 Foun-dation has been registered and the Number 25208 has been assigned.

All Rotarians, their families, friends, and associates need to provide that number to a Bashas’ cashier along with their Bashas’ Thank You Card one time only! From that time on, every time they use their Bashas’ Thank You Card 1% of their purchase price will be con-

tributed to PolioPlus via the our Foundation.

THIS IS A NO BRAINER!!! All Rotarians are encour-aged to aggressively recruit others to register Number 25208 starting next Tues-day September 1.

All Rotarians are requested to register additional tax exempt entities wherever available since an individual number can accumulate $5,000.00 maximum.

Dear Friends in Rotary, Much of the world’s atten-tion lately has been focused on daily reports of a declin-ing global economy. When we are inundated with such news from seemingly every corner of the world, we sometimes overlook the many reasons why we are blessed to be Rotarians and why we, collectively, repre-sent over 1.2 million rea-sons as to why the world is a better place! It’s time we shared the good news! November is Rotary Foun-dation Month – and it’s a perfect time to reflect on all that is good with Rotary and all that Rotarians accom-plish in the world. During

Grants for University Teach-ers; and, they brought our PolioPlus contributions to-wards Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge to $90.7 million! Yes, our Rotary Foundation had to make some serious cutbacks in Matching Grants, staffing and other Foundation programs that did not set well with many Rotarians, but we did so in order to remain vital while we weather this economic storm. Already, our pru-dence is paying off and we are beginning to see a re-bound in our portfolio. More importantly, our Ro-tary Foundation remains one of the most successful

charities on earth because of Rotarians, like you. Please join me in making your annual gift to our Ro-tary Foundation during Foundation month and en-courage others in your Ro-tary club, your district, and your zone to join you and me in furthering our Foun-dation’s success. “The Fu-ture of Rotary is in Your Hands.” Sincerely, Glenn E.
