As the Rotary year begins I am both humbled and hon-ored to be able to serve as our District Governor for the Rotary year ending June 30, 2010.

I am very excited and looking forward to the opportunity to visit your clubs, meet the members of your club and to see first hand the exciting projects that your club is ac-complishing. This year’s slogan is “Bring Passion to Rotary” As we begin implementing our goals and ideas for the new year, let’s take a moment to reflect on why we are doing what we are doing. For some of us, fellowship is most important part of our Rotary involvement. For oth-ers it may be providing clean drinking water for a village of people who you may never meet, yet for others it may be assisting someone to be self

sufficient the rest of their life by allowing them opportu-nity to read. To be able to serve others less fortunate and make a positive difference is some-one else’s life is to leave footprints long after we are gone. Let’s start this year with a renewed passion and at year’s end may we look back and be proud that we are Rotarians who have made a positive impact on someone else’s life. After all…

We have two new District Governors or 2009 20010; Clare Richards for Rotaract 5510 and Christine Wilkes for Interact 5510. Clare is a member of the newly reformed East Valley Rotaract Club. She started

in Rotaract at ASU when, as a freshman, she was handed the job as president in mid-year. She turned the club around from only a few members into the vibrant club it is today. After a few years of teaching behind her Clare helped Bee-Lian Chou restart the East Valley Rotaract Club. Clare Rich-ards has taken on the role of Rotaract District Gover-nor with great enthusiasm to lead our three clubs to greatness. She hopes to work with other Rotaract clubs from 5490 as well as other California Clubs. Christine Wilkes is a gradu-ate of RYLA. While there she learned about the Inter-act District Council and

joined immediately following camp. Right away she re-started the Mesa Westwood High school Interact club. She had nine members, a faculty advisor, Al Mabrey and Alan Havir at their first meeting. They already have several community projects in the works. As District Governor Christine, with her executive board will focus on building new Inter-act clubs, restarting old ones and regenerating and expanding existing clubs. With our two new governors you can contact them to speak to your club and help you get Interact and Rota-ract involved in your club activities. Please take time in your area to determine

DON’T FORGET TO GET YOUR ARTICLES ABOUT YOUR CLUB’S ACTIVITIES SUBMITTED ON TIME!

I am delighted to see the quality and quantity of the articles that you are submit-ting. It really shows the work that Rotarians in Dis-trict 5510 are doing for our communities and around

the world.

Please keep them coming. We are all interested in the projects and people in your club, so don’t be shy about tooting your own horn.

When you submit an article, please don’t embed the pictures in a Word docu-ment. For some reason, I can’t get good quality pic-tures when I extract them. Also, the higher the resolu-

tion of your photos, the bet-ter will be the end result. Thanks.

A “NUTS AND BOLTS” seminar designed to help “Incoming” Club Presidents, Club Rotary Foundation Committee Chairs and As-sistant Governors better understand the new Rotary Foundation changes that become effective July 1st was held on Saturday, June 20th. It was attended by 55 Rotarians representing 27 Rotary Clubs from across the districts 41 clubs.

The prehistoric inhabitants of the Valley known today as the Hohokam Indians constructed over 500 miles of canals using only primi-tive hand-tools. These ca-nal systems have been rec-ognized with the Award for Excellence in Engineering by the American Society of Civil Engineers, the first such award to be given to a prehistoric engineering pro-ject. In fact, much of the Salt River Project’s modern water delivery system fol-lows the course of these ancient Hohokam canals. Mesa’s Park of the Canals preserves over 4000 feet of the Hohokam canals, some of which were improved and used by the modern pioneer settlers of the Valley. Other historic and prehistoric structures can also be ex-plored at the 34 acre Park. The Park of the Canals also features the Brinton Desert Botanical Garden, a com-

pass course, nature trails, ramadas, fixed grills and plenty of picnic tables and park benches. The Park was establishes well over 20 years ago largely due to the efforts and resources of local Ro-tarians and Rotary Clubs. The names of these Charter Donors are memorialized at the Park on a bronzed plaque. Several years ago, the play-ground equipment was re-moved from the Park due to safety concerns. Unfortu-nately, the City of Mesa did not have the resources to replace the playground and families stopped visiting the Park. This led to an in-crease of criminal activity at the Park and the decline of the Park as place for whole-some recreational activity. The Mesa West Rotary Club decided to take on the project of revitalizing the

Park. With the assistance of the Mesa Sunrise Club and the Mesa Club, Rotari-ans joined forces with the SRP and the Foundation for Mesa Parks and Recreation to raise over $10,000.00 to qualify for a grant through KaBoom, a national non-profit organization that helps communities build playgrounds. Children from the surround-ing neighborhood helped develop an exciting new playground design for the Park. The Home Depot Foundation contributed more than $120,000.00 and around 400 Home Depot employee volunteers to help prep the site and participate in “Build Day” on May 28th. Over 500 volunteers, includ-ing many Rotarians, partici-pated in the effort assem-bling playground equip-ment, spreading many tons of woodchip safety surfac-ing, painting walls and

structures, installing pavers, planting vegetation, provid-ing children’s activities, cre-ating a tile mosaic featuring the handprints of local chil-dren and refurbishing a small storage space to be used as a police field office. With the community mental-ity you might expect to see at an old-fashioned barn-raising and the resources and manpower you might expect to see on Extreme Home Makover, the Park of the Canals was completely transformed in a single day. Even with the warmer weather, the Park in now bustling with families and children enjoying the new playground and much-improved Park. A Park founded by local Rotarians and Rotary Clubs has been revived and perpetuated by a new generation of Rotari-ans carrying on their Clubs’ legacy.

I have accepted the Chair-manship of the Grants Committee for this year under the District Founda-tion Chair, Gary Whiting. We are in the process of finalizing the team and the resources that will help you be successful and effective in getting grants approved and moving along with your service projects. The committee is getting up to speed quickly as we ex-pect a crunch of requests early at The Rotary Founda-tion (TRF.) As you may have heard the money to be distributed by the Founda-tion has shrunk to 70% of the level given in 2008-09. There still remains $9.5 million for Foundation pro-grams, but it is expected that the money for grants will be approved and pledged by late August or early September. Therefore I cannot urge you enough to get those grants that are in progress dusted off and completed pronto. New programs take time to get all the players on board and forms completed. As you know Matching Grants re-quire International partners and that makes it somewhat time consuming. Simplified grants usually don't take as much time and are handled here in the district. Early emphasis should be on Matching Grants. MGs should be discussed with and sent directly to Jim Freeman [email protected]. There is an option for clubs this year for funding their matching share. Instead of a club putting up a dollar amount to be matched by TRF at 50%, they can elect to send their club contribu-tion to the Annual Fund. In turn, the district will agree to increase the District Distrib-uted Funds (DDF) so that the total project cost is met. DDF is matched by TRF at 100%. This method will increase the DDF we will receive after the funds have been held for three years. I checked with the grants

staff at RI and they say this method is being used suc-cessfully by several dis-tricts. Of course, if the grant request is not approved, the district would return the money to the club. Clubs submitting Matching Grants requests will be provided with all the details. In District 5510, this year we have $15,265 for Simpli-fied Grants. Guidelines for District 5510 require that the club put up at least half of the total cost of the pro-ject and the District Grants Committee will contribute $1,000.00. Note: Two clubs may join together in one project by each contrib-uting the minimum $500 and may request a total of $2,000.00 from DSG funds. Simplified Grants will be collected by committee member, Alan Havir alan@alan havir.com. Eligi-ble grants will be approved on a “first come, first served” basis. If we stay with the $1,000 match for all requests, the district can approve fifteen. Final reporting will continue to be a top priority as future funding depends on timely, complete, and accurate reports being filed with TRF. We have two positions on the team dedicated to follow up and help in this impor-tant piece of the grants process. Fred Gorrell from the Paradise Valley Club will follow up Matching Grants and Governor, Don LaBarge, will be handling final reports for Simplified Grants. We now have a link on the district website for District Grant Files http:www.rotary5510.org Under “District Links” click on “District Grants Files.” You can go there directly with http://www.rotary5510online.org/grants. The Michael Finney Foun-dation is holding its 13th Annual Dry Heat Classic Golf Tournament and All-Star Comedy and Variety Show. Each year, it is sup-ported by such celebrities as Baseball Hall of Famers, Ozzie Smith and Phil Niekro; Football Hall of Famer, Dick Butkus and Ted Hendricks; and TV per-sonalities such as George Lopez, Magician Lance Burton and comedian Rich Vos. This year, Actor and Comedian, Bill Engvall from The Blue Collar Comedy Tour will be the featured golf guest and will headline the All-Star Com-edy and Variety Show at the Dodge Theater on Monday, August 3, at 7:00 pm. For the last 7 years, and again this year, GOL-AZ is a beneficiary of this event. Each year, The Michael Finney Foundation has do-nated from $10,000 to $20,000 from this major fund raiser to GOL-AZ and it is hoped that this year will see a sizable increase in their donation. The Dry Heat Classic is a combination of events. It is a banquet, auction, golf tournament, street rod car show and a comedy night. The banquet and auction will be held at the Phoenix Mountain Preserve Center on Sunday evening, August 2nd. We need auction dona-tions from Arizona Rotary Clubs, Rotarians and friends of Rotary. Needed are sports related items, jewelry, golf packages and vacation trips which do very well at this auction. Please contact Phoenix Arcadia Rotarian and GOL-AZ Board Member, Michael Burke at 480-236-0962 or [email protected] . The Golf Tournament will be held on Monday and Tuesday, August 3rd and 4th
