to lead a Rotary club, as well as Dis-trict committees. If your club is struggling year after year with devel-oping leadership, then this is the training designed to help. Already 53 Rotarians have taken advantage of the RLI programs. PDG Bernie is publishing the dates for the coming year in another communiqué. A couple of other dates to circle on your calendars are: Sept. 10-12/10 Waterton Peace Park activities; Oct. 1-2/10 is the Make Dreams Real Seminar/PETS1 in Calgary; Oct. 23/10 Ross Kennedy is hosting a membership seminar in Red Deer; and on Oct. 15-16/10 we will be co-hosting the Success Seminar in Ed-monton. All of these items are to be posted to the district website, so you can learn more about them, and register at the same time.

For my first attempt at writing an article for the newsletter, I think I have gone on long enough. We do want to make sure that we add value to your Rotary experience by provided valuable information in these columns. Please feel free to comment on the contents of the newsletter. Remember that Rotary Builds Communities and together we will be Bigger, Better and Bolder.

Sidney Craig Courtice, [email protected] 403-289-5003 John Griffith, [email protected], 403-210-2802 INFORMATION ABOUT SPIRITUAL DIRECTIONS CENTRE: We are a not-for-profit personal and spiritual development centre, founded in 1999 and operating under the auspices of the Community Opportunity Foundation of Alberta. We have been providing afford-able courses, workshops, counselling, spiritual mentoring, various types of energy therapies (Healing Touch, Energy Medicine, Reiki, etc.) and some training programs (Art and Animal Assisted Therapy, Energy Medicine, Healing Touch, EFT, Tapas Acupressure Technique). We are not connected to any religious organization and focus on meeting and helping people find meaning and purpose in their life journeys. With charitable foundation funding we have been able to provide some subsi-dized counselling services, and have donated leadership at the Drop in Centre, Sunnyhill long term care facility, the hospices, school programs and several other not-for-profit organizations. Our reasons for hosting this conference:

We are concerned about the lack of collaboration, long-term focus and systemic perspective in the way crucial decisions are being made by leaders in many sectors.

We are concerned about social inequities and many environmentally unsustainable practices that have been the norm for many years, and want to do our part in introducing Albertans to the exper-tise of two world-renowned experts in the areas of sustainable social, environmental and business practices.

We are hoping that this conference will be a fund-raiser for us, as well as a celebratory event to mark 10 years of service to our community.

We hope this conference will be the beginning of several ongoing conversations addressing community issues

The West Africa Project Fair was created to share the needs and challenges of West Africa, to give the you a hands-on experience in communities immunization and humanitarian programs, and to create lifelong friendships. Our West African hosts have opened their arms to receive us by creating an exceptional itinerary. Modeled after polio immunization exercises, you will participate in a community health outreach program, where we will travel to communities and villages in and around Accra to deliver Guinea-worm and other vaccines to children. The emotional experience is identical to participating in an National Immunization Day. We also will join the Ghanaian Rotarians for a Community Service Day to visit the local communities to visit humanitarian project sites and engage the local communities. In addition to our humanitarian purpose, we will spend time exploring the sites, culture and friendships that are only possible by being Rotarians. This trip will create memories and experiences to last a life time.

Howard Tours Founded in 1948, Howard Tours has been operating tour programs worldwide for six decades. We have taken thou-sands of Rotarians to participate in polio eradication, wheelchair deliveries, and humanitarian missions, and played a critical role in the creation of the West Africa Project Fair by providing an easy, comprehensive travel program for North American participants. More than 300 people from North America have traveled with us to the Fair. Howard Tours is a tour company, and not a travel agency. As such, you are ensured of the greatest travel value. We do not resell tours from other compa-nies. We purchase the travel services directly from the airlines, hotels, sight-seeing companies, etc., and then sell the program directly to our customers.

Rotarian Purpose The West Africa Project Fair (WAPF) was created to provide support to West African Rotary projects, expose all Rotarians to the needs and challenges of West Africa, give the participants a hand-on experience in community immuni-zation programs and create lifelong friendships. Our West African hosts have opened their arms to receive us by creating an exceptional itinerary. By joining this program, you should expect to work with the local Rotarians to understand how important Rotary is to their communities. You will look at and participate in Rotary Foundation projects, engage in field work in the local communities, create strong friendships with the West African Rotarians, and participate in hands-on humanitarian and health related field work.

Community Immunization and Humanitarian Project Site Visits: A unique element of this program is the way we explore the local communities. One day you will travel deep into the local communities, with the Ghanaian Rotarians, to provide health immunizations. This process is identical to the polio immunization programs. The only difference is what is in the dropper. On the next day, the Ghanaian Rotari-ans will take us to their humanitarian project sites to experience, first-hand, the work of Rotary and The Rotary Foun-dation. We will join together to provide a hands-on experience in African community service. Through these two spe-cial days, you will have a unique experience in the villages, towns and communities of Africa. Membership is limited, and will be confirmed, on a first-come, first-served basis. Interest in this tour has been overwhelming. We expect it to sell-out quickly.

Passport, Visa and Health Requirements

All U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport and Ghana visa. The cost of obtaining your passport, visa and inoculations are not included in the tour price. It is your responsibility to apply and pay for the following items: U.S. Passport: Must be valid at least six months after your scheduled return to the U.S. Ghana Visa for all U.S. citizens: An application and information on applying for the visa will be sent to you with your trip confirmation materials. Allow four weeks to process the visa application. Required Inoculations: The Center for Disease Control (http://www.cdc.gov) states that a yellow fever inoculation is required. They also recommend that U.S. citizens take precautions against malaria and other diseases. Please con-sult your physician to determine precautions appropriate for you.

Special Airfare Note: Tour price does NOT include roundtrip airfare. This program is being offered to Rotarians throughout the world, making it impossible to anticipate and include the necessary flight itineraries. In August, after our group has formed, we will offer the lowest possible group airfare options to North American members. Alternatively, you are free to purchase your round-trip airfare or use your frequent flyer mileage.
