Club Newsletters can be very inspiring and unifying. They can be as simple as a weekly overview and invitation, or as involved as a bi−monthly compilation of articles, tips, celebrations, and announcements.

The main purpose of a newsletter is to document, publicize, inform, and provide visitors with take-home information. But they do so much more. Newsletters encourage communication among members, recognize members’ accomplishments and achievements, inspire club members to participate more, and help the club achieve its mission and vision. Is it your club’s vision to be Distinguished? An informative and celebratory newsletter is a great Public Relations tool!

Greetings from the Marketing Team!

We have gained several key players: New Club Development - Karen Daly, Community Outreach Coordinator – Carmela Porcella and Club Fitness Coordinator – Joe Spencer. Reach out and communicate with these dedicated Toastmasters to offer your help.

A challenge has been thrown down for a competition between the division governors. The one who gains the most new clubs by the spring conference will win fabulous prizes (undetermined as yet). Contact marketing team for ideas on how to develop your leads. We are ready to put on a demo or kick-off meeting. Look for the bright pink “leads” referral sheets at the division contests.

With 2 new clubs in the bag, we will have our third, fourth and possibly fifth clubs to be chartered by Halloween. Power Inn Speakers in Sacramento has faxed in their paperwork according to President Sam. Liberty has 20 and is cutting the check. PRIDE has to wait for vacationing Herb Long to return from Hawaii for their check. Cog Masters has run into a snag with the host building management refusing to allow outsiders for meetings. Club mentors are needed for all right away. Marty Taub conducted a model meeting for Keenan & Associates in Rancho Cordova and plans to charter by the next meeting.

Plans are afoot to hold a club coach training workshop as well as new club sponsors and mentors training. We cannot have new clubs without those new club sponsors and mentors – they are the key to a club surviving for the long haul.

We are down to the wire with having clubs pay their semi-annual membership dues. Only 14 clubs remained as of Oct 9th. Toastmasters International is still struggling with the late dues payers.

Our Regional Advisor Allan Edinger and I visited our local prisons in our district to see about perhaps converting our 3 gavel clubs to regular Toastmasters clubs. California has 10 correctional institutes and Nevada 2. Our new Prison Club Outreach Coordinator will be Brian Richards. He will need lots of volunteers to carry the Toastmasters voice to the prisons.

With your help and leads, we can be a distinguished district. What better motivation can you use than sharing one of the world’s foremost venues for improving your communication and leadership skills?

With all of the things going on this month, I’ve been thinking a lot about my commitment to Toastmasters. I found this article on commitment and thought many of you share the same views.  

Top Ten Truths About Commitment The word commit comes from the Latin word committere, which means to connect, entrust. When we stand behind our words, we demonstrate commitment. Commitment exists when our actions meet the expectation of our words ‐ when there's a congruency between intent, words and action. Consider the following concepts & may they inspire you to live from your commitments! 

 1. Commitment is connection! Commitment is the connection between our values, intentions and our actions. Connection is the coming together of more than one element, while commitment is the giving of our selves to it, the surrender. The connections we make generate our commitments, just as our commitments generate more profound connections. 2. Passion: the essence of commitment! Passion is that which deeply stirs us. It's the fire from within and that which motivates us. When passion is missing, our actions lack meaning and we don't get the results we want. Without passion, our actions are obligatory and lack velocity. Commitment emanates from passion ‐‐ passion is the seed from which commitment blossoms! 3. Commitment = persistence. If one is committed, one's support is uncompromising and unending. One is willing to do anything in support of the commitment. This applies to love as much as it applies to professional or global commitments. Commitment drives us and anchors us during challenging times. Commitment helps us to maintain our integrity; we persist to that which we're committed. 4. Commitment is conscious! Commitment requires insight and self‐awareness ‐‐ one must know what one's values and ideals in order to commit to them! Do you know someone who's a conscientious and productive worker but who's not happy? Such a person frequently lacks insight and self‐awareness ‐ commitment is difficult if you don't know what's most important to you! Commitment requires an ability to observe self and make conscious decisions. 

5. Commitment is purposeful. Commitment involves choice ‐ saying yes to our values and to our passions! Commitment is never haphazard or random. While we may lose our perspective 

from time to time, commitment always involves choice and intent. Commitment enables us to be purposeful. 6. Commitment is self‐expression. Self‐expression is the culmination of who we are and how we're being. When there's perfect alignment and congruency between who we are and how we're being, we are authentic and fully self‐expressed. This is wonderfully fulfilling! If commitment is the ultimate expression of our values and who we are, self‐expression is a core ingredient of commitment. 7. Vision brings forth our commitment. Does commitment generate the envisioning process, or does vision generate commitment? Either way, commitment and vision are inexplicably tied together. Expand your vision while you deepen your commitment in order to produce powerful results! 8. Commitment inspires us to be and do our best. We aim for the sky and shoot for the stars! We refuse to accept less than the best from our selves and others. Our commitment inspires us to reach for quality and excellence. We continually enlarge and clarify our vision ‐ this contributes to us living our personal best. 9. Commitment lives in communication. Communication involves verbal and nonverbal interaction. While commitment lives in the declaration and words, evidence of commitment lives in the actions we take and don't take. Be attentive for evidence of commitment in communication. 10. Commitment is surrender. Commitment is the giving of our selves to what we most believe and want. It is the merging of our ideals and our being. We surrender to our ideals and with commitment, live them. We create what we want when we surrender to our commitment.

Distinguished Club Program Changes During the 2013 Board of Directors Meeting, the Board approved the following changes to the Distinguished Club Program: 

Clubs that charter after September 1 are eligible to earn Goal 9 through training by a district representative.  The charter submission fulfills the requirement for an on‐time officer list and dues payment (Goal 10). 

These changes will allow newly chartered clubs the opportunity for success early on. In the past, new clubs that chartered after the first club officer training period (between June 1 and August 31) could not achieve Goal 9. The Board approved a modification that will allow newly chartered clubs to earn credit if they receive direct training from an authorized district representative in a live training session. By including the club officer list and dues payment with the charter paperwork, newly chartered clubs will now receive credit for Goal 10, where before the list had to be resubmitted. These changes were announced at the August 2013 Board Briefing, and will take place immediately.

Conduct an Effective Club Visit Help your clubs grow and maintain quality through club visits. Serving Clubs through Visits: A Guide for Area Governors (Item 219) can help you navigate the varied environments you'll encounter during these visits. Your support affects the future of clubs in your area and empowers club officers to help members achieve their goals.

Club Proxy for District Council Meeting 

For the District Council meetings, the following applies: District Administrative Bylaws; Article X: Council Meetings, Quorum, Proxies, and Voting; Page 90, section (d) Proxies Either the club president or vice president education of any member club may designate, in writing, any active individual member of the club to act as a proxy for him or her at any district council meeting. In the event one of those officers is not in attendance at the meeting and has not designated, in writing, an active individual member of the club to act as his or her proxy at such meeting, the officer or proxy holder in attendance shall be deemed to hold the proxy of the other and may therefore cast two votes at such meeting. The intent of this provision is to assure that every club will be represented by two votes. No other proxies shall be valid at a district council meeting. A written proxy, to be valid at a district council meeting, must contain all the elements set forth in Toastmasters International policy and must be delivered personally, by mail, by fax, by e‐mail, by electronic transmission, or by other reasonable means to the club member who will hold the proxy. The proxy holder must present the proxy in paper form (i.e., print out an e‐mail) to the credentials desk. If the proxy does not bear a handwritten signature, it must have the typed name of the club officer(s) giving the proxy or some other indication that the club officer(s) authorized the proxy to be given. A proxy that complies with these requirements shall be treated as valid so long as the credentials desk has no reason to believe that the proxy was not authorized. A proxy holder cannot transfer or assign a proxy to someone else. A valid proxy delivered to the proxy holder is revoked only if the club officer who gave the proxy takes one of the following subsequent actions: he or she destroys the proxy, cancels the proxy in writing, issues another proxy authorized at a later date, or actually attends the district council meeting.

The district sends a credential or proxy form to each club president and vice president education 30 days before a district 

council meeting in the district newsletter or in the mailing announcing the meeting. C. The credential or proxy form must contain the district number; a description of the event; the date and location of the meeting; 

space for the club name and number; space for the name of the club president, vice president education, or proxy‐holder who attends; space for the signature of the president or vice president education authorizing the credential or proxy; and the date the credential or proxy is signed. 

D. Proxies are valid only for in‐person meetings.

“Division B will continue its legacy of reliably contributing to the District’s success by again being Distinguished or better for a 12th consecutive year. The goal is finishing the year with at least 16 Distinguished clubs, and a net club growth”

Area Governors continue submitting their club visit reports.

All but 2 clubs have DCP goals already earned, with 13 having 2 or more. This time, Capital Nevada is the over achiever with 5 goals already, with Amped, Biggest Little Talkers, Jibboom Street, Blue Tahoe, and First Nevadans all tied for second with 3 goals each.  All but 3 clubs have met their minimum dues renewals at this time, and dues keep coming in, with the Division currently standing at 336 payments. We are working our way through the fall contest season, our final Area contest taking place in Reno at this very moment, and the Division contest scheduled for next Saturday, the 19th at the Ansari Business Building, room 106, at UNR. 10 AM

Pertinent Activities in September and early October: 1. Produced and distributed the October Division C newsletter. 2. Continued planning for and executing details for Saturday, October 12 DECM and Division C contest at Marysville. 3. Area 31 held their area contest in Paradise. Attended by Minda Fernish and I. 4. Area 32 held their area contest in Redding attended by Minda Fernish and I. They also held an Area Council meeting on September 8, which I attended. 5. Area 33 held their area contest in Yuba City, attended by Minda Fernish, Brad Craig, Bernie Quinn and I. 6. Held organizing conference call with Division Chief Judge Jan Shillingberg. 7. Compiled a list of lessons learned that came out of the area contests. The functionaries from each area contest contributed a list and I compiled the final list such that each suggestion was not attributed to any area. Team Up-dates! We’re very happy to announce that Tina La, of Davis Town and Gown, has agreed to serve as Area 42 Governor, and fellow club member Arun Sen, DTM, PDG, has agreed to serve as her mentor. Welcome to the team!!! Dues are Due! 23 of our 25 active clubs have paid dues. The Area Governors are encouraging the remaining two clubs (Dixon and State Street Sacramento) to wrap up the renewal dues process. One club is still reporting low dues payment, but has at least six active members, so they should be up to minimum shortly. Contest Time All of our Area Contests are complete and the Division D Contest is scheduled for Friday, October18th. Come on down to 700 “H” Street and enjoy the fun! The Council Chambers will be unavailable, so we’ll be using the 3rd Floor Lunchroom. Come early to get the best seats! Area Governor Visit Reports Our club visits have been completed and we’ll have all of our reports shortly New Club Leads We’re currently working with a contact at Novartis in Vacaville to start a company club; management is encouraging and with the green light, we anticipate a club chartering quickly. Officer Training Club Election Time is just around the corner! We’ll be arranging dates and locations for Club Officer Training by the next DECM. Special Thanks….to Chief Judge Kristy Beres, who has not only make the Division D contest season a great success, but also stepped up to help the Division E team make their contests awesome. She’s gone above and beyond the call of duty….thanks, Kristy!!!

DIVISION F

OCTOBER 12, 2013

The Division F was a smashing success. It was held at the Parkside Church in Auburn and we had a full house. In total, we had 15 contestants competing. PDG Dianne Bish was the Humorous Speech Contest Toastmaster, and Zackary Sousa, DTM, Division E Governor, was the Evaluation Toastmaster. Both were rewarded glitter covered pink microphones which will come in handy at future events throughout the district. I would like to thank Sondra Nunez, Pam Alexander, Veena Vijayaraj-Kadidal, Roger Linder, Ruth Schwartz, Rachael Cleveland, Lee Zasloff, Matt Peterson, Ben Friedrich, Valleri Andrews, Elizabeth Dunn, Bern Lannan, Patricia Morgan, Kristi and Hooker Beres, and my friends in Division B for helping make our contest a success. A very special thank you to Joe Velky and Dianne Bish for their encouragement, wisdom and support. Congratulations to George Jarosik and Mary Thompson, who won the Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests, respectively.

All Division F clubs have met the minimum of member dues paid, and all clubs have at least 1 DCP goals. Roseville Toasters, Early Risers, and Empire all have 5 DCP goals! Great job everyone!

Area Governor visits are underway and several reports have been submitted!

Club Health: I will be making visits to EdTalkers (72) and Statement Makers (74) during the week of October 7 – 11 for mentoring, and assessment of what additional help is needed. Administrative: Club Visit scheduling being finalized. Initial discussion held with Division E Governor Zack Souza for January 2014 DECM Educational Workshop: “Moments of Truth.” Plans are to hold a meeting with Area Governors and Club Presidents in early December, dry run prior to January DECM. The formal club visit was conducted on September 10, which included a visit to the club officer’s meeting. The Club Success Plan lacked identification of members who would be contributing to the Distinguished Club Program; the on-line visit form will be completed after this information is received. The club exceeds 20 members, and is growing under the new club officers. An Open House is scheduled for October 29. Hi-Liners meets on Thursdays, noon – 1 pm, at SMUD. A formal club visit is scheduled for October 3. I will meet with the officers for a few minutes afterwards. Master Talkers meets 2nd & 4th Wednesdays, 7-9 pm, at SMUD. The formal club visit was conducted on September 25, which included a visit with club officers afterwards. They did not provide their Club Success Plan, but did say they will soon meet the requirements for a Distinguished Club. The on-line visit form will be completed after identification of members who would be contributing to the Distinguished Club Program. Their biggest challenge is membership. They count 7 active members, and started the year with 14. We discussed methods that could be used to increase membership. Speakers Into Leaders is a student club that meets at CSU Sacramento on Wednesdays at 7 pm, starting September 4. A formal club visit is scheduled for October 16. Power Inn Speakers has over 20 membership applications in-hand, so will charter soon. The formal club visit will likely be held in late October, to give them a chance to develop a Club Success Plan.

Candace Hudson - AREA 84: We had a great Area 84 contest held on September 13, hosted by Sampaguita at Elite Realty. David Quiros of Klassy Talkers is representing Area 84 in both Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests at Division H. Official club visits are being scheduled. Participated in several Area and Division contests. Next Area Council meeting is Tuesday, October 29.  MJ Kelly - AREA 85: MJ has completed all 4 area reports. The main problem that faces all the clubs is the lack of membership. Good-to-Great has about 5 members as does T@NG. The other two clubs, Fair Weather and Carmichael have more. MJ plan to make more visits to my clubs. I believe that all clubs paid their dues. I am encouraging all my clubs to participate in the Spring speech contest and joining me for the Fall District 39 Conference. Carmichael has responded: 6 of 7 officers were trained 10 active members 4 possible new members. MJ will be visiting Fair Weather this Wednesday
