“BE LION HEARTED”
I am looking forward to working with the Li-ons of 22W this year. We will focus on mak-
ing District 22W the premier district of Lions Clubs Inter-national. We are off to a very good start with the excel-lent trainings con-ducted recently at Allegany College and Carroll Com-munity College under the direction of our GLT and GMT Chairs, PCC John Hopkins and
PDG Och Ochoa. I am grateful for the team of Lions who helped conduct the trainings and for the officers who demonstrated their commit-ment by attending. At the District Governor Elect Regional Insti-tute training in Boston, Massachusetts this past March, all first vice district governors were asked to list their goals for the upcoming 2014-2015 Lions year. My top priority goal is Membership and Retention. Our International President’s theme is “Strengthen the Pride.” In his message, IP Joe Preston lists several ways to increase membership. I have set a goal of 200 new, energetic, enthusiastic working members for this year. Now, how are we go-ing to make this happen? “JUST ASK!” An extension workshop is planned with Jim Canon for August (dates and times to be announced). I am also urging clubs to participate in the Club Excellence Process (CEP) to help make our clubs stronger. I would like to ask each Lion to have a membership application on their person at all times. This way, you are prepared when someone crosses your path who you feel would be a good lion. Be ready and prepared to ‘just ask!’ A new contest, “Strengthen the Pride” with New Members is one of my projects for this Lions year. This contest will be in the roster
book (which I hope will be available at the Change of Banner meeting on July 26). But, in order to get this project underway immediately, I am including the contest in this newsletter. I want this to be a team effort with everyone focusing on strengthening the pride of Lions in District 22W.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Our International Convention shall be held in Toronto, Canada July 4 – 9. Lion Sandy and I will be leaving on June 30 as I will have sever-al days of training before the convention be-gins. I hope to see many of you there! This year, I am also adding a new committee, Ethics. This committee, under the leadership of Region II Chair Randy Taylor, West Hager-stown Lions Club, will handle any conflict(s) that may arise within our clubs. Of course, I am hoping we will not need to use this com-mittee; however, I believe this may be a re-source to lean on in helping to retain our cur-rent members. It is better to keep a lion than to lose one because of a misunderstanding. Con-tact information will be in the Roster Book under Ethics Committee. Please remember the upcoming cabinet meet-ings (Saturdays), August 9, sponsored by Re-gion IV at the Terra Rubra Lions Club Hall, 6300 Middleburg Road, Keymar, MD 21757.The remaining cabinet meeting dates are: (Saturdays): November 8, Region III; Jan-uary 24, Region II; and March 28, Region 1. As always, if there is anything I can help you with, please feel free to contact me.

I hope this message finds everyone
doing well and enjoying this sum-
mer season. Since the Multiple
District Convention, I have had the
opportunity to visit numerous clubs
for their Installation of Officers
ceremonies. These incoming offic-
ers will lead their perspective clubs
into the 2014-2015 Lions’ year
with many achievable goals and
with all the hard working, dedicated
Lions of District 22W. I know
these goals will be met.
The District Officer Training that
was held on June 14th at Alleghany
Community College and June 21st
at Carroll Community College went
very well. The clubs are very lucky
to have such leadership to guide
them. The District officers, that
have been chosen by District Gov-
ernor John to serve on his Cabinet f
ernor John to serve on his Cabi-
net for the year, are very good
managers and will serve the Dis-
trict well. We are all fortunate to
have these individuals accept
these leadership positions and
extend their service to District
22W.
The instruction at the officer
training sessions that was given
by the members of our Global
Membership Team and Global
Leadership Team was excellent.
Everyone who attended these
sessions left more knowledgea-
ble about their upcoming tasks.
In the month of July, many clubs
have scheduled their annual pic-
nics as well as numerous fund-
raisers. I will be doing my best
to attend as many of these
events as possible. I look
forward to seeing many of
you throughout the District
during the Lions year and at
the upcoming Change of
Banner Ceremony on July
26th.
Once again, thank you for
the opportunity to serve as
your First Vice District Gov-
ernor and I hope everyone
has a great 4th of July holi-
day. And, remember, when
you serve, WE SERVE!
Yours in Lionism,
Bob Mitchell

Elevator Speech, Mentoring, and

Governor John is focusing on
membership. Our district has a
very strong membership team
available to help you and your
clubs grow your membership.
Contact PDG Och Ochoa to
schedule assistance. The GMT
team is also planning to hold ad-
ditional training in the fall.
International President Joe Pres-
ton’s theme this year is
“Strengthen the Pride” Each
month I will highlight different
ways this can done in our dis-
trict.
Strengthen the Pride through Service : Service has been the bedrock of our association since we were founded in 1917 and in 2014 we will embark on a three year centennial celebra-tion to honor our commitment to service our communities: *Centennial Service Chal-
lenge: This celebration of
service will begin in July 2014
and will conclude in Decem-
ber 2017. There will be four
elements to the Centennial
Service Challenge, with spe-
cial recognition available to
clubs that report their partici-
pation in the Global Service
Action Campaign projects that align with the program.
In the coming year, clubs are also encouraged to par-ticipate in a special project by responding to children in need, such as those that address literacy, hunger, abuse, or poverty—wherever there are children lacking resources and sup-port. Invite friends and family to participate in these activities.

A “pride” is a close-knit
family of lions, as can be
found in the savannahs of
central Africa. Each
member of the pride has
responsibilities.
Whether they are the
hunters, protectors, care-
givers, teachers, or learn-
ers, they work as a team,
for survival and prosperi-
ty. If even one member of
the pride does not fulfill
its role, it can affect the
entire group.
There is another group of
Lions just as proud. But
unlike the lions of Africa,
these Lions aren’t feared.
Instead they are admired
and respected. They, too,
form a ring of protection,
and they have shown
themselves to be skilled
hunters – providing food
for the hungry and tend-
ing to the needs of a dif-
ferent flock. These Lions
don’t restrict themselves
to grassy plains. Their
territory has spread to
every corner of the
world, and they bring
goodness wherever they
exist. It’s us – the 1.35
million members of Li-
ons Clubs International.
The English dictionary
provides another defini-
tion of the word “Pride”

something good. It is not
the pride of being boast-
ful it is the pride of ac-

good, and reaching out
to assist others.
Lions are indeed a proud
organization. There is a
feeling of pride shared
