A positive impact with LEED® Canada-NC 2009

The growing interest for sustainable building design & operations, of which we are part, is embodied in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating Systems in North America.

This document explores the potential contribution for the use of DISTRIBUTION DUROY INC. products for a LEED® Canada-NC 2009 (New Construction and Major Renovations).

The CaGBC LEED® Canada-NC 2009 Rating System has 110 points divided in seven categories for certifying the design and construction of commercial or institutional buildings and high-rise residential buildings of all sizes, both public and private.

DISTRIBUTION DUROY INC. products can assist in earning points towards the various LEED rating system certification lev-els. In some cases, DISTRIBUTION DUROY INC. products contribute directly to individual LEED points, but in other cases can only help meet the overall intent.

MR 4 1 - 2 points

Requirements

Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus 1/2 of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 10% (1 point) or 20% (2 points) based on cost of the total value of the materials in the project.

The recycled content value of a material assembly is determined by weight. The recycled fraction of the assembly is then multiplied by the cost of assembly to determine the recycled content value.

Direct Recycled Content COMMENTS

Do not contribute Direct Regionals Materials COMMENTS MR 5

Requirements

Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested, recovered and processed within 800 km (500 miles) (2,400 km if shipped by rail or water) of the final manufacturing site.

Demonstrate that the final manufacturing site is within 800 km (500 miles) (2,400 km if shipped by rail or water) of the project site for these products.

If only a fraction of a product or material is extracted, harvested, recovered, processed and manufactured locally, then only that percentage (by weight) must contribute to the regional value. The minimum percentage of regional materials for each point threshold is 20% (1 point) or 30% (2 points).

® TECHNICAL DATA SHEET

The vinyl tiles INNOVA TILE from DISTRIBUTION DUROY INC. do not contribute to this credit since none of their components are extracted, collected, treated and recovered within a 800 km or 2,400 km radius (depending on the transportation mean used).

The percentage calculation was performed by considering the requirements of Credit MR 5 and the maximum distance radius (which depends on the means of transportation used).

The origin of the main components and the mean of transportation used must be validated for every project.

The INNOVA TILE vinyl tiles' final manufacturing site is more than 800 km or 2,400 km away (depending on the transportation mean used). However, the distributing site is located in Quebec, Boucherville (J4B 6G4).

The vinyl tiles INNOVA TILE from DISTRIBUTION DUROY INC. can contribute to this credit because some of their components have a 26% post-consumer recycled content. However, they do not contain any pre-consumer recycled content.

In addition, 25% of the materials are recovered and reused in the same manufacturing process for DUROY DISTRIBUTION INC.’s products. This percentage was not considered in the pre-consumer recycled content calculations.

These percentages were calculated based on the components’ weight ratio over the product.

DISTRIBUTION DUROY INC. can provide specific data for each

product with recycled content in a LEED project.

IEQ 3.2 Option 2

1 point

Requirements

Develop an IAQ management plan and implement it after all finishes have been installed and the

building has been completely cleaned before occupancy.

Option 2 - Air Testing

Conduct baseline IAQ testing, after construction ends and prior to occupancy, using testing

protocols consistent with the United States Environmental Protection Agency Compendium of

Methods for the Determination of Air Pollutants in Indoor Air and as additionally detailed in the

LEED® Canada Reference Guide for Green Building Design and Construction.

Indirect Construction IAQ man-agement plan : Before

occupancy

The vinyl tiles INNOVA TILE from DISTRIBUTION DUROY INC. can indirectly contribute to the credit IEQ 3.2 - Option 2: Air testing. This product is certified FloorScore # SCS-FS-03075.

In addition, the adhesives used for the on-site installation of the vinyl tiles INNOVA TILE have a VOC content of 0 g/L, and are therefore compliant with the standard (SCAQMD) Rule # 1168.

During a LEED Project, DISTRIBUTION DUROY INC. can rapidly provide the technical data for the components having emissions.

1 point Direct Low-Emitting Materials: Adhesives and sealants COMMENTS IEQ 4.1

Requirements

All adhesives and sealants used on the interior of the building (i.e., inboard side of the weatherproofing system and applied on-site) must comply with the following requirements as applicable to the project scope:

Adhesives, Sealants and Sealant Primers: South Coast Air Quality Management District

(SCAQMD) Rule #1168. Volatile organic compounds (VOC) limits are listed in the table below and correspond to an effective date of July 1, 2005 and rule amendment date of January 7, 2005.

The credit IEQ 4.1 only applies to adhesives and sealants used on-site and on the interior of the building (inside the vapor barrier).

The vinyl tiles INNOVA TILE from DISTRIBUTION DUROY INC. can contribute to this credit since the adhesives used for on-site installation have no VOC content, as displayed in the table below:

In a project, DISTRIBUTION DUROY INC. can rapidly provide the technical data for the components having emissions.

Up to 3 points for Regional Priority Credit 2 may be proposed for this credit that is intended to allow adding point emphasis to recognize one OR more issues that have additional regional envi-ronmental importance.

To achieve a Regional Priority credit, the applicant must identify LEED credits which have addi-tional regional environmental importance.

A project must achieve the base credit and then propose that credit as a Regional Priority credit.

Please refer to the «Advantages and Aspects to Consider» section of the Regional Priority credit.

For a list of applicable credits, please refer to the CaGBC website www.cagbc.org, under the LEED® tools section for the LEED® NC 2009 for new construction and major renovations and LEED® CS 2009 for core and shell development Rating Systems.
