Overview FlueGasHeatRecovery(FGHR)systemshavebeenwidelyavailableoverthepastdecadeandtheirbenefitsareunderstoodbyindustrystakeholdersandmorediscerningconsumers.

FGHRdevicesrecoverexcessheatfromaboilersflueandputthisrecoveredenergytousebypre-heatingtheDomesticHotWater(DHW)coldwaterfeedforbothcombinationboilersandsystemboilers.

WhatislesswellunderstoodisthatFGHRsystemsfallintotwodistinctcategories–thosewithaThermalStore(“StoredFGHR”suchastheCanetisGasSaver™)andthosewithoutaThermalStore.AsignificantbenefitofStoredFGHRsystemsisthattheyforcetheboilertocondense100%ofthetimetherebyimprovingefficiency,standardFGHRdeviceshavenoeffectonwhetheraboilercondenses.

DuetotheperformanceefficienciesofferedbythepatentedThermalStore,StoredFGHRsystemsincludingtheGasSaver™offerx10theannualutilitybillcostsavingsthanstandardFGHRsystems.Forahouseholdthisequatestosavingof£100to£200perannumdependentuponthesizeofthedwellingandexactusagecharacteristics.

StoredFGHR(includingtheCanetisGasSaver™)arenowrecognisedinUKSAPandprovidesubstantialSAPscoresavingsfordevelopersofnewproperties.DependingupontheexactconstructionofahouseanditslocationSAPscorereductionsofupto24%canbeachievedbyincorporatingaGasSaver™inthedesign.Theeconomicsofthisarethatahousebuilderordevelopercanreducebuildcostsbyanestimated£3kto£10kperproperty.

FollowingdiscussionswiththerelevantagenciesCanetisanticipatesthatRdSAPwillshortlybeupdatedtoincludeGasSaver™,thiswillincreasethetotalUKboilermarketcoverageto43%forbothSAPandRdSAPassessments.

BoilerPlusannouncedbytheUKGovernmentinOctober2017,andeffectivefromApril2018,alsomandatesFGHRdevicesasoneofthemeasureswhichmustbeincludedwitheverynewcombinationboilerinstalledintheUK–GasSaverfullymeetsthisregulatoryrequirement.

CarbonDioxide(CO²)savingsavailablefromStoredFGHRdevicesarealsosignificantduetotheenergyefficiencythatthesedevicesprovide,itisestimatedthattheUKwouldachieve28%oftherequiredCO²reductionsneededby2030ifaStoredFGHRdevicewasincludedwitheverynewcombinationboilersoldintheUKmovingforward.

WatersavingsarealsoavailabletousersofStoredFGHRdevicesthroughthereductioninwastedlukewarmwater,thissavingreduceswaterutilitybillcostsforthosehouseholdsonawatermeterandisestimatedtosave24m³ofwaterperhouseholdperannum.AcrosstheUKthishasthepotentialtosave350billionlitresofwater,12.3TWhofgas(saving2,600KtCO²e)and300GWhofelectricityassociatedwiththetreatmentandprovisionofdrinkingwatertohouseholds–thishasanequivalentpowersavingoftheelectricityrequiredtotypicallyrun86thousandhouseholdsforoneyear.

Finally,asignificantgreenbenefittobothusersandtheUKeconomyisthattheinstallationofaStoredFGHRsystemhastheeffectofmakingacondensingboilercondensingfor100%ofitsoperationaltime.Thisfixesaproblem,andunintendedconsequence,thathasexistedsince2005whencondensingboilerswerefirstmandated,itisestimated,thatcondensingboilersinnormaluseonlycondenseforapproximately10%ofthetimewheninspaceheatingmodeanditisafactthattheydonotcondenseatallwhenproducingDHW.

Introduction GasSaver™isapatentedsolutionthatdeliversaFlueGasHeatRecovery(FGHR)systemwithaThermalStorea.k.a.StoredFGHR.

TheGasSaver™capturesandreuseswasteheatthatordinarycondensingboilersdischargeintotheatmosphereviatheflue(visibleasexcessive'pluming').BecauseofapresenceoftheThermalStoreGasSaver™recoversheatfromtheboilerfluebothduringDHWproduction(referredtoasadirectbenefit)andduringthespaceheatingoperationofaboiler(referredtoasanindirectbenefit).

ThegraphbelowshowsboththedirectandindirectbenefitsofGasSaver™intermsoftheheatrecoveredinKWHsacrossthemonthsofayear.Understandablytheindirectbenefitsaregreatestinthewinterandshouldermonths(Spring&Autumn)whentheboilerisbeing

usedtoheattheproperty.

benefitsprovidedbythedevice.

PerformanceimprovementsforDHWproductionhavebeencalculatedasanefficiencygainof51.4%savingtheconsumermoney&reducingcarbonemissionsforboththehouseholdandUKPlc.

Thisequatestodomesticutilitybillsavingsof£100to£200perannumrepresentingapaybackofunderthreeyearsatcurrentGasSaver™RRP,itisanticipatedthatthispaybackwillreducetoapproximatelyoneyearasdemandforStoredFGHRsystemsincreasesandtheassociatedsupplycurveshiftsbecauseofproductionscale.

FGHRsystemshaverecentlybeenrecognisedinimpendingregulation,UKBoilerPlus,whichcomesintoforcefromApril2018.FGHRisincludedwithinthecompulsorymeasures,oneofwhichmustbeinstalledwitheverynewcombinationboilerinstalledintheUKfromApril2018.Unfortunately,BoilerPlusdoesnotrecogniseStoredFGHRsystemsasbeingsignificantlymoreefficientthanstandardFGHRdevices–thishasthepotentialofdeliveringunintendedconsequencesfortheoutcomeofBoilerPluswithconsumerspotentiallyinvestingininferiortechnologywhichdoesnotprovidethesavingsorpaybackavailablefromSoredFGHRsystems.

Fortunately,StoredFGHRsystemsareaccuratelyaccountedforinUKSAP,theStandardAssessmentProcedureusedtocalculatetheenergyefficiencyprofileofallnewbuildhousingintheUK.ThisisbecauseSAPisbasedonempiricaltestdataprovidedbyindependenttestagencies.WithinSAPGasSaver™canreduceDwellingEmissionsRate(DER)scoresbyupto24%providingsignificantcostbenefitstobuildersandconstructorsalike.

How GasSaver™ Works GasSaverattachestotheflueofadomesticboiler,theexhaustfluegasesfromtheboilerpassthroughtheGasSaver™,indoingsocondenseandarecollectedwithintheGasSaver™.ThiscollectionofcondensateprovidesaThermalStorefromwhichenergycanberecoveredforuseatalaterpoint.Theactofcollectingthecondensatehastheeffectofforcingtheboilertocondenseandthereinfinallydeliversonthepromisemadetoconsumersbythemanufacturersofcondensingboilershowevertothispointundeliveredduetoacombinationoftechnicallimitationsandtheeverydayusagepatterns.

Therecoveredenergyisthenmainlyusedtopre-heattheDHWcoldwaterfeedforbothcombinationboilersandsystemboilers.

AnalysisofSAPscoresforStoredFGHRsystemsoutlinesarecognitionoftheinfluenceofindirectbenefitsonimprovedseasonalefficiencyofgasboilers,insummary-
