Kamehameha the Great was the first monarch to unify the Hawaiian islands. He was the mo’i which

in Hawaiian language means king or sovereign ruler. The first observance of Kamehameha Day

occurred on June 11, 1872 after Kamehameha V (Kamehameha the Great’s grandson) proclaimed the holiday. Kamehameha Day is recognized as a Hawaii state holiday on June 11 each year in honor of the sovereign ruler who established the Kingdom of

Hawaii in 1810.

Kamehameha Day festivities include the official lei draping ceremony which will occur on Friday,

June 12 at 3 PM. Various flower leis will be draped over his statue.

On the following day Saturday, June 13, the annual King Kamehameha Floral Parade will occur from 11 AM to 4 PM from downtown Honolulu

through Waikiki (approximately 8 kilometers). The parade floats are decorated in vibrant and fragrant flowers with entertainers performing on the floats. Several princess pa`u riders on horseback are also adorned with vibrant and fragrant flowers. There is a princess from each of the 8 major Hawaiian

islands. The parade is also televised live on local television channels.

You can find great seating anywhere along the parade route. There’s no such thing as a bad

viewing spot for this spectacular floral parade in honor of Hawaii’s greatest monarch.
