The campusWe specialise in English language courses using the latest methods, materials and equipment. Our classrooms are modern, comfortable and individually climate controlled. Asa Discover English student you will have access to a fully-resourced library in which to study and practice language skills using books, magazines, audioand visual materials and language learning software on the computers.
The student lounge is a great placeto relax and mix with other studentsfrom different countries. There are alsobreak-out lounge areas on each level to relax with friends or make use of our free wireless Internet and you will love the all-seasons rooftop deck for socialising, parties and taking in thecity views.
School hoursThe college is open from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday. You have accessto all college facilities between these hours, including the library, student lounge and deck.
The college closes for one week overthe Christmas/New Year period.
Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)In addition to daily supervised self-access times, all students have a scheduled CALL session in the student library each week. Our computers feature the latest Clarity software, imported from the UK offering learning materials which are engaging, motivating and relevant.You can work on key areas in whichyou wish to improve or extend your skills by a guided discover approach where students are encouraged to think for themselves and to become independent learners.

Activities & toursDiscover Melbourne by participating in our exciting range of weekday and weekend activities. Extracurricular activities run 7 days a week at Discover English, offering a wide range of fun activities to engage you in Melbourne lifestyle and culture. Most activities are free and you are always accompanied by a Discover English staff member on weekdays. Weekend activities include day trips and camps to places such as the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians and usually incur a tour cost, but at a great discounted rate for Discover English students. All weekend activities are led by leading Victorian tour companies.
As part of our extras program we also run TOEIC seminars, free conversation classes and a job seminar helping you to write your CV and prepare for prospective job interviews.

TOEICDiscover English is an Authorised Public TOEIC Test Centre. Public tests run every four weeks at the college. TOEIC is the Test of English for International Communication.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is designed to focus on the development of your academic English skills. All students in EAP receive pathway and counselling support and can take advantage of the Discover English Pathway Progress Guarantee.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Preparation program focuses on developing exam techniques and preparing you for the listening, speaking, reading and writing tasks you will undertake in the IELTS exam. The program is intensive and is designed to assist you in maximising your scoring potential on the IELTS exam within a short timeframe. The course provides practice and guidance for both the academic and general test modes.
Minimum entry level requirement for IELTS Preparation is IELTS Band 5.0 or PTE Academic Score 36. Part time IELTS courses are not available to students on student visas as their principal course of study.

General English
AssessmentTo track your progress assessment is ongoing and may include: weekly progress tests, regular review tests, level-up tests, written assignments, oral presentations, classroom participation and homework. The teachers provide weekly feedback on your progress and can advise you on how to improve on your areas of weakness and build on your strengths. Test results and comments on progress are recorded in your student Progress Report.
Regular weekly assessment enables teachers to identify if you are ready to progress to the next level. Level-up procedures take place weekly, ensuring that you are suitably challenged. If you are not making satisfactory course progress intervention strategy may be implemented where necessary to ensure satisfactory progress is achieved.

Or if you are planning to study your master’s, or already in your master’s program, and looking to develop your fl uency to assist in your studies, Discover English’s English Excel is the course for you. This dynamic program focuses on advanced level communication skills and grammar awareness though the mediums of current affairs, world issues, culture and current trends.
Minimum entry level requirement for English Excel is IELTS Band 6.5 or PTE Academic Score 58.

The Cambridge ESOL Courses (FCE, CAE) are specially designed to help you prepare for the Cambridge certifi cate examinations. These certifi cates can help you gain entrance to university or college, and improve your job prospects. The courses worktowards strengthening your skillsand developing your fl uency and the certifi cates are recognised by more than 11,000 employers, universities and government bodies aroundthe world.
Both FCE & CAE courses feature closed classes and a maximum of12 students per class. You will have access to a range of practice tests and will complete full mock examinations under exam conditions as part of the course. The minimum entry level for the FCE exam preparation course is IELTS Band 5.5 or PTE Academic Score 42. The minimum entry level for the CAE exam preparation course is successful completion of Cambridge FCE Exam Preparation or IELTS Band6.5 or PTE Academic Score 58.

Homestay is a great way for you to participate in cultural exchange. Homestay provides you and your host families with a broader cultural perspective and promotes your English language skills by allowing you to engage with native English speakers outside the classroom on a daily basis. You will learn more about Australian culture and get the opportunity to experience different lifestyles, food, activities and attitudes. Homestay includes accommodation and food; breakfast and dinner are supplied on weekdays, with three meals provided daily on weekends.

The student lodge offers apartment type rooms inside a secure student residence. Features include a swimming pool, gym, cafes, share kitchens and a coin laundry. How much money should I bring?Melbourne is a reasonably priced major city with a range of living options available. As a guide, you will need a minimum of $18,000* (excluding tuition) per year to cover accommodation, daily living costs (food, transport, clothes and entertainment), health services and other expenses. How long have you been in Australia?I have been here for three months and maybe be here for eighteen months. I am here with my husband whois in Australia for his work.
Why did you chooseDiscover English?I looked for schools on the Internet and found Discover English that way. The site was organised and nice and gave me the information I needed. I then visited a few schools and I liked the service I received here and the location. Discover English is so central which is great and it really suits me. I am really happy with my choice as I have learnt a lot, spoken English every day and learnt about other cultures too.
So you are happy here, what do you like about Discover English?A lot of points, one is that there aren’t too many students in the school and everyone knows everyone. Also it is rare to fi nd a school like this where English is the only language spoken even outside of class. There are no other German speakers here now, but even when I am with a group who all speak the same language they speak English to each other, not just to me. The policy seemed strict, but it is not like primary school or something, this school has an adult approach. So I think the defi nite advantages of this school are the small class sizes, the teachers change every four weeks and we get a test every Friday. The test every week is not stressful, but it motivates us to learn. Also we get to speak with our teacher every week about our progress, which is nice.
How long have you been in Australia?Almost two years. I had been to Australia a few times before on school trips and for rugby. I love Australiaand as I knew a little about it from my other trips here,I chose to come here again for my working holiday.
Why did you choose Melbourne?I did farm work for around two years and so I wanted to try the city life and Melbourne is famous for being Australia’s best city.
What did you do in your free time while living in Melbourne?Taking photos, walking around and cooking in my place. I really like the night views in the city. I recently went to the pub with my classmates and yesterday I went to a Korean restaurant with many Discover English students. I have had a lot of fun since I joined this school.
What did you like about studying at Discover English?My agent recommended this school to me. I was happy because it is new and the class sizes are small. I am happy I came here. At fi rst I was thinking whether I should continue or not because I don’t have a lot of vocabulary, but now I have changed my class and I enjoy it. Also I can make friends easily here.
