This is the third issue of Care Connect – Wipro Cares’ newsletter. It brings you an update on the volunteering activities that the Wiproites have been upto in Q3 of this year (2012-13).

Volunteering - Indian Initiatives Kochi

The volunteers have been consistently visiting the Mar Athenatius School, Kakkanad&Thripunithura Girls Higher secondary school (Amaara Foundation) – Malayalam Medium Schools and teaching: English (basic and intermediate) / life skills / presentations skills / team activities

ChennaiThe volunteers’ team received the Lions club award for being the best institution in hosting blood donation campaigns on the occasion of UN Day celebration. Dr. Stefan Weckbach, Consul General, Germany, was the chief guest and many eminent dignitaries had been at the award function on 29th Nov in Chennai.

We have also had an eye donation awareness camp clocking 1800+ registrations from Wipro CDC, which apparently, is the highest count from a single corporate till date.

PondicherryThe volunteers visited Sharon Society old age home and distributed sweets and new dresses bought for both, the members and the staff of the old age home. The team also visited Rajiv Gandhi Home for the physically handicapped and gave sweets and sports items to the residents. At the occasion of Christmas, the team visited the SOS children’s village and got decorative items to decorate the Christmas trees and distributed cakes and chocolates.

HyderabadOn Gandhi jayanti, the team visited “Thanakalan Village” in Nizambad district of Andhra Pradesh. They presented bed sheet and clothes to more than 30 needy old age people from the village. With the kids, they had all the fun - they danced, sang and learned to play a new instrument, Lazim; they distributed Gandhiji’s autobiography. The kids shared their aim in life and about their school. During this trip, the volunteers also distributed sports kits and T-shirts to the school children;

The team served breakfast to children at Amma Foundation. They also helped the children at Ashray Akruti with notebook covering activities and computerizing the lesson plans. The team celebrated Christmas Day with the children at Ashray Akruti. The activities included decorating trees, dancing and cutting cake.

MumbaiThe team has been visiting Sneha Sadan regularly. This time around, they conducted Computer’s basic tutorials and a career awareness session as well. During Diwali, the volunteers did a couple of activities like, lantern making, diya painting, rangoli making and sweets and crackers distribution. And during Christmas, the team picnicked with the children at the water park. They played ball games, antakshari and even kabbaddi in the swimming pool!

Also, the team participated in a charitable inter-company tournament - Cricket for Charity tournament 2012 for Cheshire Homes.

PuneAt the occasion of Diwali, the volunteers visited various centers of the Door Step School to be a part of Diwali Art Camp. The camp saw volunteers and children coloring diyas and crafting a decorative "Kandil" by using scissors and craft paper.

A volunteer visited an orphanage and spent time with the children on subjects like hygiene, integrity, honesty, hard work, patience with some examples to achieve success.

KolkataThe team distributed old clothes and woolens among the workers and their families at the local brickyards near Wipro Cares supported school “Towards Future”.

NCRThe team celebrated Diwali with the children at Setu. They organized fun activities like musical chair, dumb charades and lucky person contest. They also distributed sweets to the children. In yet another regular initiative, a volunteer carried out a meaningful session with the children at Udyan Care.

KotdwarThe volunteers organized a Rangoli Competition & finger licking snacks for one and all. They also organized stalls for Diwali & decorative items at the campus. The collections with this event were forwarded to the Widows of Army Personals involved in manufacturing these items.

During Christmas, the team visited the nearby slums and organized fun events and quiz competitions with the help of "SamajSewaAivumShikshaSamiti" NGO.

BangaloreIn another initiative, the team visited Samarthanam, an NGO for the disabled and amused the children by singing, dancing and playing musical chairs. In yet another one, the volunteers organized lunch at the Snehadan HIV Rehabilitation Center and Swanthana Mentally Disabled Children Center.

The volunteers visited the SOS Children village and did lot of activities like cleaning the Garden Area, playing football, teaching dance and playing one minute games.They also donated 14 boxes of Books, Toys, Games and stationery to the SOS Children Village.

Apart from these, a team of volunteers have been regularly visiting the school children at Jalahalli Primary & High school, assisting the children with their academics.

Overseas InitiativesBrazilThe volunteers along with their families and friends visited old age home: “Casa de Amparo ao Idoso Bom Jesus. The viola group “Amigos da Viola de Curitiba” sang and played some classic Brazilian songs to the elderly. The elderly clapped, sang and danced along. At Mother’s Society of Comunidade Vila Torres, a community nearby Wipro, the volunteers played Santa and celebrated Christmas with 77 children.

DubaiA blood donation camp was organized by Mashreq bank. The donated blood was utilized in Hospitals and Medical centers. Apart from this, there was a “Walk to cure Diabetes” in order to create awareness amongst people about the condition, prevention and management by making lifestyle changes.

Employee Engagement EventsJOGThe week-long festival of giving back to the community saw a collection of 356 boxes of stationary, clothes and toys and 56 new registrations for volunteering with Wipro Cares. The collection was sent to Goonj, an NGO that makes an attempt to convert anything that is non-usable into something that could be used by the needy.

Organ donation too was a part of this festival where in 81 people came forward to pledge their organs. A live chat too was organized around this cause which received an overwhelming response of 130 queries in an hour’s span.

In UAE, the team was able to collect clothes, stationary, etc. The clothes collected were sorted and distributed to the needy. The stationary was distributed to children who were getting educational assistance to study in UAE from Indian Consulate & Indian Community Welfare Committee.

NGO Stalls @ Diwali& Christmas We had NGOs come up and put up stalls around the two festive occasions. The NGOs during Diwali generated revenue ofRs. 1, 898, 200, while those around Christmas generated Rs. 5, 94, 000.

Woolen Clothes’ CollectionConcerned about the people who would not have winter clothing, the Wipro Cares’ volunteers at Kolkata, Bangalore & NCR came forward and ran a woolen clothes’ collection drive and distributed the woolens to the needy ones.
