Year End Comments: 2017 has been a year of transition as we move from a fully centralized Alumni experience to a more decentralized approach with some Alumni Officers being directly attached to faculties and schools. Additionally, and for the first time, we established 3 common goals for the Board with the expectation that each Director handling a specific portfolio would try and integrate the overarching goals into their portfolios. As was expected we met with some resistance but it was clearly a direction we needed to take. The other major accomplishment of the Board was moving from an individual report based system to a shared, integrated system using Google Docs as the foundation. This transition went better than expected and leaves us well positioned moving forward. We continued to enjoy excellent relations with both the Senior Leadership team at Ryerson as well as Alumni Relations. With the new Vice President, University Advancement being appointed, we are looking forward to a strengthened Alumni offering that will enhance the goals of the University and its fund-raising efforts. While Paul will be leaving the team, having served his term, Maurizio Rogato will be assuming the duties of Vice President as Stephanie takes on the President’s role. We are already planning the initiatives for 2018. Of course, our successes for the year could not have been possible without the support and dedication of the volunteers who serve as Directors and help with vital committee work. Thank you. We also recognize the outstanding support from the Alumni Relations team whose passion and dedication are second to none.

How do my SMART Goals support the Common Goals of the RUAA? I strongly believe that engaged students will become engaged alumni. By focusing on student and recent alumni engagement, I support RUAA’s goals to foster a lifelong mutually-beneficial relationship between the university and its alumni. Year End Comments: In my first year serving on the RUAA as Director of Student and Recent Alumni, I have engaged with highly spirited students and proud alumni at multiple occasions, encouraging all to stay involved with Ryerson by raising awareness of events, surveys, and volunteer opportunities. It was a tremendous learning experience as I participated in a host of Ryerson events for the first time and listened to students and recent alumni share their Ryerson experience and what their imminent needs are. I look forward to continuing to serve on the RUAA and make meaningful strides towards increased recent alumni engagement, as well as increased awareness of the aspirations of Ryerson’s young alumni.

How do my SMART Goals support the Common Goals of the RUAA?

- Increase value to Alumni – friends, networking, mentoring, skills development, discounts, recognition - Drive donations to Ryerson – “support what you know” - Increase value of Alumni associating with Ryerson - get skills / give skills

Year-end Comments: In 2017, I leveraged my network to promote Ryerson University with Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments. This included 2 Director's General, 3 Members of Parliament, a Provincial Advisor, The Mayor of Toronto, a Toronto City Councillor, Toronto's new Chief Resilience Officer and Emergency Planning Staff. This increases the value of the Ryerson University brand and hence the value of the Ryerson degree. I have introduced Ryerson to Toronto Police, Toronto Fire, Urban Search and Rescue and the Canadian Military. The objective was to identify projects of mutual benefit. These projects provide opportunities for Ryerson undergraduates, doctoral candidates, and Alumni to learn in an outwardly facing environment and to find project funding. I have promoted Ryerson University and its Alumni in many public fora. The largest of these was the Toronto Maker Festival which attracted over 12,000 attendees. By showcasing Ryerson's student and Alumni talents, I was able to reconnect Alumni, influence university selection decisions, promote the work of Ryerson students and Alumni. Over the past year, I was able to identify several full-time, paid internship and volunteer opportunities for students and Alumni. This provides not only financial benefits but also life experiences that help Alumni strengthen their Curriculum Vitae. At the international level, I have introduced Ryerson University to several United Nations Offices, NATO departments and NGOs.

In March 2017, I had the privilege of introducing Ryerson University to over 900 participants of the Fifth Session of the Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas, held under the auspices of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). Representation from national and local governments, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, mayors and parliamentarians, local communities, Indigenous peoples, and leaders from business and academia. Ryerson's work in development of Public Safety technologies, policies and processes is helping to reduce the frequency and impact of disasters on populations in the Americas. I am working on a collaboration project with Ryerson University, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Durham College, Durham Regional Police Services and corporate partners. This project provides opportunities for Ryerson students and Alumni to develop technologies that will assist first responders (Police, Fire, Paramedic and Urban Search and Rescue) in the performance of their duties. Year End Comments: The past year has been one filled with a variety of alumni engagement opportunities. The goals that were set out to accomplish in consultation with the RUAA staff were both modest and creative. These goals looked at continuing my work exploring the possibility of an alumni house as well as creating two unique social media outreach and alumni engagement projects. As the year progressed there was a realization that more time and focus was needed to effectively execute on one of the alumni projects. The MemoRYEs project was chosen because it had all the ingredients of being successful social media engagement initiative. One of the main benefits of the project was that it helped to further strengthen a type of reflective pride and connection between Ryerson Alumni and our Alumni Weekend Events. This engagement project along with speaking at two graduation ceremonies as well as establishing opportunities for the CYC alumni to reconnect with Ryerson were among some of my highlights of the year.

17 Apr 17 1. The alumni spring appeal is now in progress. We are contacting alumni by mail, email and phone on behalf of their faculty to ask for their support. This is the first time we have launched an appeal targeted at the faculty (and in some cases school or program) level. We have high hopes that it will connect with alumni more strongly than the more general approach we've taken in the past. The appeal will execute between now and the end of May with most activity happening between now and the end of April.

2. The planning of the annual giving program for next fiscal has started. And a representative from the Annual

fund will be talking to the board through the plan early in the new fiscal and get their feedback and input. The intention is to work with the board on making annual giving more relevant and engaging for our alumni.

23 Jun 17 1. Fully divisional spring appeal execution has been completed - 19 different alumni segments by faculty and school. Execution through mail, email and phone with dedicated donation pages for each faculty

How do my SMART Goals support the Common Goals of the RUAA? The projects I propose to undertake (blog program support, influencers exploration and Congress support) as well as Goals 1c and 2b (providing strategic communications insight and advice) directly correspond with increasing awareness of the benefits of supporting Ryerson and/or engaging the Ryerson community. Goal 3a corresponds with all three common goals Year-end comments: The bulk of the work in this portfolio has been dedicated to publications and marketing collateral aimed at providing value to alumni and deepening their engagement, most notably the Alumni Blog. These initiatives, among others, have contributed to the development of a foundation for the advancement of this portfolio that I look forward to building on in the coming year.
