1 Volume 43 Number 11 November 2014 Director’S MeSSage Roger Tyyska Time flies by, here it is November already. November is the month when we find out who our elected officers will be for the 2015 calendar year. October was the time to prepare a slate of candidates for office. You can guess, there was neither a trickle nor a flood of folks stepping forth for the “opportunity” to serve. This year we added a mailed inquiry but, to no avail. So, what is the situation? The vacant positions are: Di- rector and Treasurer. The other three members of the board will con- tinue on as candidates for the office they now serve. As I write this, a potential candidate for treasurer has asked for more time to consider. So, what is the expected outcome? To be sure, an election by ballot is but a remembrance of by- gone days. At best we will have one candidate for each executive office by the November regular meeting. If so, a “voice” vote will be taken for “acclamation” for five executive officers for 2015. Your directors are now charged with creating a new Standard Operating Procedure for the purpose of honoring past Buicktown members. Relationships established over the past 40 or so years includ- ing significant service to the chapter are not to be disregarded. Buicktown is first about our people as we gather and share a common interest in our Buick hobby. Friendships and bonds formed over the years should continue after we are not able to participate as active members. The club will soon ex- tend an outreach to a new group to be called “Buicktown Senior Alumni” consisting of past mem- bers. The friendships and bonds may continue with receipt of the “current” issue of our newsletter, the Buicktown Crier. Included will be an updated roster containing both members and alumni. “Keeping in touch” should be made a little easier. Details are to be rolled out for your approval at the November regular meeting. It is well understood that Buicktown, as we now stand, will not again organize a National Meet for the BCA. However, in my opinion, we do need an annual BUICK event that excites us and can accom- modate the entire membership. The Water Street location at the Back to the Bricks car show could be just that Buick event. I believe the Durant Dort office building is the last physical shred of evi- dence of the Buick Motor Company remaining in Flint. Is this a meaningful place around which we can rally? There is a good possibly you will say, “Yes”. I hope to convince you, information is forth- coming. Soon, we will say goodbye to the snowbirds and wish them well. For us remaining in Michigan, chose a winter project in anticipation of Spring and the roar of your Buick exhaust. A good alterna- tive is becoming a winter volunteer; the Buick Gallery could use your skills. New members, your badges are ready for pickup ! See you at the November meeting. Roger

Buicktown Chapter Meeting Minutes October 22, 2014

The location for the club meeting was Ruggero’s Restaurant in Flint Township. Social hour started at 6:00 p.m. There were 44 members in attendance and no new members or guests. ●Roger Tyyska called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. ●There were no corrections to Dave Bloch’s meeting minutes of Sep-tember 22 as published in the “Buicktown Crier” newsletter, therefore, the minutes were approved as written. ● Chuck Anderson gave a brief report of the financial transactions of the Club for the previ-ous month, including balances in the Club’s bank account. His report was accepted. ● Millie Lutz mailed three get well cards to members. Millie reported upcoming events: Club meeting November 19 @ Whiteys Restaurant in Davison, Christmas meeting @ Zender’s Restaurant in Frankenmuth Dec. 13. ●Roger discussed BttB 2015-Water Street. Roger stated that General Motors will fence-in the parking lot adjacent to the Durant-Dort Building. Construction activity is presently hap-pening at Plant 1. While the Board is working to enhance the event, Roger encouraged members to consider volunteering to help Buicktown make Water Street BttB a big success next year. ●Roger discussed an offer made by Sloan Museum Representative Dan Bower to have Buicktown park their cars on the Southside of Whiting Auditorium rather than the north side for Sloan Car shows. The north side is a larger area and in the shade, but since the “Swap Meet” was relocated, the north side sees fewer people. The Southside, smaller in area, and more sunny, is at the entrance/exit of the show and sees more people. The membership voted unanimously to accept Dan’s offer and park on the Southside of Whiting Auditorium. ●Roger presented an idea to create a “Buicktown Senior Alumni” position in the club. This would be for longtime members who made significant contributions to the club but now find it physically and/or financially difficult to fully participate, yet, are still interested in Buicktown happenings. Members voted unanimously for the Board to draft a written proposal for mem-bership to vote on. ● Elections: Roger stated he was not a candidate for Club Director and Chuck stated he was not a candidate for Club Treasurer in 2015. Dave Bloch (Secretary), Al Jones (Member-At-Large), and Millie Lutz (Social) stated they will be candidates for their current offices. Paul Marchi stated he has phoned several members trying to recruit candidates for club offices without success. Roberta Vasilow was nominated for Director and accepted. Jerry Walker was nominated for Treasurer, but wanted a few days to decide. If only one person is a can-didate for each club office, the election will be by “acclamation” at the November 19 meeting. If more than one person runs for any office, then the entire election of all officers will be by ballot. ●End of the year Activity forms for awards will be available at the November 19 meeting. ●The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m. Submitted by Secretary Dave Bloch

Assistant Directors –Millie and Larry Lutz

What a wonderful fall we have had, except maybe for the Sat.of our fall tour! In spite of the weather ,we had a very nice day and thanks to John Root and everyone who attended. Our next meeting is November 19th at Whiteys 109 North State Rd. in Davison, we will order off the menu. The election of new officers will be held and Larry says "Ask not what your club can do for you , but what you can do for your club" LOL The Christ-mas Party will be Dec.13th at Zenders from 12-3 , if you are un-able to attend the November meeting but are planning to come to the Christmas Party please call me. God Bless and be safe Millie and Larry

Sloan Museum has a lot of artifacts, nearly 400,000 of them! You name it, we proba-bly have one. A large, eclectic collection is required to accurately record life in Flint and Genesee County over the last 200 years. Our exhibit, Collecting Flint from A to Z, highlights 26 groups from our vast and varied collection, normally hidden away in museum storage. Each alphabetized set reveals something about our shared history. See historic automobiles and firearms, radios and wedding dresses, blueprints and everything in-between. Most exhibits are about one thing; this exhibit is about every-

thing! M: Miniature N: Names O: Oddities P: Perambulators, Parasols and Pipes Q: Quilts R: Radio & TV S: Saginaw Street T: Trunks U: United States Army V: Vehicle City W: Wardrobe X: Xoxo Y: Yard Sale (items not actually for sale) Z: Zoology & Natural History
