Hi, let me introduce

myself. I have just

joined CCRS as the

Faculty Director on

August 1st. I am

excited about the

opportunity to work

with the CCRS staff

and join the excellent

leadership team with

Brenda Eastham and Dottie Squire. I am spending my first

month learning about all the roles and services performed by

CCRS for child care providers and parents. This includes

learning about CCAP processing, child care training, and quality

child care support. I will be attending child care trainings and

visit some child care centers with CCRS staff. I look forward to

understanding CCRS and its role so that we can continue to

provide high quality and responsive services to child care

providers and parents.

Here are just a few things about my background. I have been

a faculty member in the Department of Human Development

and Family Studies for many years. Much of my research and

teaching has focused on divorce and the impact on children. I

have developed several programs for parents and children to

help them deal with the challenges of divorce. The picture to

the left was part of my work with Sesame Street on issues

related to young children and divorce.

From 2003-2013, I served as Department Chair. In this role, I

had general administrative and budgetary responsibilities for

CCRS so I have some preparation to provide more direct

leadership of the organization. But I have much to learn!

An important part of my role is to communicate with

stakeholders in child care—providers, parents, social service

providers, early childhood faculty and policymakers. In the

coming year I hope to meet with lots of people to learn how

CCRS can better serve our community. If you have ideas or

suggestions, please email me at: [email protected]. I

would be happy to meet with any individuals and groups that

have an interest in the future of our children.

Answer: ExceleRate™ Illinois is now using the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale®, Third Edition (ECERS-3).

The Third Edition of the ECERS is a major revision that introduces innovations in both the content and administration of the scale. It retains the continuity of two principal characteristics of the ECERS-R: (1) a comprehensive or global definition of quality, and (2) a reliance on observation as the primary source of information for assessing classroom quality. ECERS-3 is geared towards classrooms comprised of children 3-5 years of age.

The Scale consists of 35 items organized into 6 subscales:

Space and Furnishings

Personal Care Routines

Language and Literacy

Learning Activities

Interaction

Program Structure

What’s the difference between ECCERS-R and ECCERS-3?

More emphasis on interactions and the teacher’s role

Decreased emphasis on counting materials; more on

how they are used in teaching activities

Greater reliance on observation of ongoing classroom

activity

Eliminates teacher interview

Increased emphasis on engaging language, literacy, and

math experiences with many new items and indicators

Distinguishes between “play areas” and “interest

centers”
