GOLD IS FOREVER TIMELESS
The trend in prosthetics towards highly aesthetic precious metal restorations continues unabated. Despite
fluctuating prices, the desire to place one’s trust in consistent, reliable values is as strong as ever – in values such as
biocompatibility, durability and aesthetics, which are immune to any short-lived trend. Because of its long-standing
tradition in matters of precious metals, WIELAND has for many years taken it upon itself to offer dental labs
and clinicians innovative and competitive dental alloys. EXPECT THE DIFFERENCE! BY WIELAND.

Dear reader,
In times of change, dynamic companies show their strength by continuously adapting
their structures to new requirements. Both in what they do and with regard to personnel.
WIELAND Dental + Technik has therefore taken a further step to align its activities closer
to the requirements of the market. The clearly delineated structure consisting of two
strong pillars “Dental” – dentistry and dental technology – on the one hand and “Indus-
try” – chemicals, solar energy, electrical engineering and medical devices on the other,
makes today’s structure ready for the growth of tomorrow.
Adjustments to our portfolio also entail a new allocation of responsibilities. Since
August 1st, Oliver Völlinger, who has previously welcomed you in this column, has
become exclusively responsible for the management of the Industry Division. The
management of the Dental Division is now in the hands of CEO Torsten Schwafert,
a recognised specialist in the dental sector. Many readers will know him personally
from his former role as Head of Sales and Marketing at DeguDent.
Over the last few weeks, Mr Schwafert has settled into his new position with en-
thusiasm and commitment and will be in touch with many of you, our WIELAND
customers, through a number of channels during the autumn. Furthermore, with
Reinhold Brommer and Friedrich Karle at his side on the management team, he can
draw on a wealth of expertise, experience and WIELAND know-how. So it is on behalf
of the new management team of the WIELAND Dental Division that we are looking
forward to working with you in order to pave the way for further progress and ever
greater success in matters of dental technology. Here’s to a successful partnership!
Yours sincerely
The WIELAND Team

Haristos Girinis is known to his colleagues as an attentive and
accessible modern practitioner. His keen eye for the type of
denture required by his patients goes far beyond the mere dic-
tates of clinical indication. The particular desires and vision of
each individual patient, together with the overall appearance,
influence the choice of material and application.
Girinis defines perfect aesthetics for a well-fitting permanent
denture in terms of absolutely identical shade matching, trans-
lucence and a natural red /white balance. With many years
experience as an expert consultant and speaker at WIELAND
events, he is delighted to pass on his wealth of expertise to
colleagues – in training sessions and in regular contributions
to WIELAND DIRECT.
Renewed vitality in every light
The use of ZIROX veneering ceramic on implant-borne bridges in zirconium oxide is the process of choice, not only because of its unrestricted biocompatibility but because the skilful use of ZIROX gives vibrant aesthetics accompanied by stunning light dynamics.
A special topic in this issue is the perfectly harmonized veneer-
ing of a six-unit bridge framework in zirconium oxide with
ZIROX using the established 3-layer build-up technique. The pa-
tient is a 72-year old man whose new anterior bridge reflects
his stunning vitality. The ZIROX veneering ceramic is suitable for
veneering hard sintered all-ceramic frameworks in ZrO2 with a
CTE of approx. 10.5 x 10-6 K-1 (25-500 °C). The framework was
milled to an anatomical shape and designed to provide sup-
port at the cusps. Here you can follow a step by step account
of the process used.

TITANIUM BASES
As a ZENOTEC user, you can now put the fabrication of implant-borne restorations on an intelligent basis: with ZENOTEC titanium bases. In times of digitisation, this ensures that value creation remains where the expertise lies.

In times of innovative CAD/CAM produc-tion, a previously untapped potential for success in the laboratory is to be found at the interface between the implant and

CAD/CAM zirconium oxide frameworks
produced in this way have never been so
affordable. The Fraunhofer Institute (Ger-

has tested the titanium base system con-
sisting of scan abutment, titanium base,

qualified positive evaluation.

With the aid of the 3Shape Abutment-
Designer™ and ZENO Cad Implant-
Designer software applications, highly
aesthetic results with optimized emer-
gence profiles can easily be obtained.
Since the scan abutments have been re-
duced to just four sizes, the software can
identify the axial direction of the implant
and the position of the anti-locking
grooves. Suitable abutment design soft-
ware applications make it an easy matter
to design the individual abutment once
the model has been scanned.
The ZENOTEC titanium bases are there-
fore a further step towards process inte-
grated CAD/CAM fabrication of highly
aesthetic and equally economical pros-
thetics in the dental lab. Both abutment
and superstructure can be designed in a
single process and milled at the same
time by ZENOTEC. The titanium bases
are available to match the implant sys-
tems of leading manufacturers. You will

Overpressing of zirconium oxide frameworks: the simply lucrative alternative to foreign-made „Opinions differ on this issue. Master Dental Technician Frank Wüstefeld describes his personal experience with a technology about which the reactions of colleagues range from ardent support to total dismissal.
Patients can rest assured: aesthetic and affordable dentures can be made in Germany.
The overpress technique has been avail-
able for zirconium oxide restorations for
quite a few years now, but dental technicians disagree about
the economic benefits for the lab. As far as my own business is
concerned, I can reveal the answer. Overpressing is a lucrative
process when the crowns or bridges are made using CAO (Com-
puter Aided Overpress) technology. If the technician has to wax
up the zirconium oxide framework, then the time and effort is
almost the same as building up a veneering ceramic. The proce-
dure is not worthwhile, but the combination of zirconium oxide
frameworks and anatomic overpressing in milled wax or acrylic
is a different matter altogether.
There are currently two software applications in use with the
ZENOTEC system. One is WIELAND’s own ZENO Cad software,
with which it is already possible to make overpressed bridges.
Here individual overpress crowns and pontics are fabricated
which are then be bonded to the zirconium oxide framework.
As from the winter of 2009, it will be possible to mill the over-
press parts either as single or splinted bridge components.
The second software application is from 3Shape. With the
current version of this program it is already possible to make
CAO crowns. The 2009 release, the Beta version of which we
are currently using, also enables overpress bridges to be made.
The 3Shape process offers overpress design in a single piece, so
that it is not necessary to bond the individual parts together.
This software should be available from autumn 2009.

Designing the framework is one thing, but the muffle system is
just as important when it comes to obtaining reliable and re-
producible results. Here it is especially important for the press
cylinder to be adjustable to the work and not vice versa, as is
often the case with muffle systems. The XXL muffle is made of
hard plastic with fixing rings in aluminium. A sophisticated sys-
tem with three muffles for 100 g, 200 g and the pear-shaped
XXL 380 g size. The durable and long-lasting material makes
this muffle a sound investment for many years to come. Easy to
clean and wear-free.
An innovative feature of the muffle is that the cylinders can be
moved separately on the base plate. This enables bridges to be
made in any required shape. Because of certain unsuitable arch
shapes, the size is limited to six-unit bridges. It is also possible to
carry out overpressing in five different shades. This means that
up to five different colours and up to 20 g of press ceramic can
be pressed in the XXL muffle. The XXL muffle can only be used
with the Press-i-Dent furnace from Dekema because this fur-
nace presses the muffle against the furnace door. It does not
matter how the plunger formers are distributed.
The WIELAND Press X Zr press ceramic is the perfect match for
the ZENO Zr material. The transparent blanks are available in six
different degrees of brightness and translucence. After press-
ing, the sprues are trimmed off and ground. Then the surface is
textured and colouring can begin. For this, the new Body Stains
are used. These create the right shade with even greater ease
and speed. Finally, the glaze bake is carried out. This, too, is a
WIELAND innovation. Glaze materials that can be sprayed from
a can. Economical, fast, clean and always evenly applied.
There are only a few stages which need to be done by hand.
Whilst this fact will not delight every technician, there is no way
to banish automation from the lab in the long term. As high-
performance automatic systems such as ZENOTEC T1 come
onto the market, accompanied by ever more sophisticated
tools, the quality of the dental surfaces obtainable improves
considerably. But there is a positive aspect to this, too. As
machine output increases, it becomes more and more difficult
for suppliers from abroad because dentures can be produced
just as economically in Germany.

WIELAND creates organisational struc-tures to pave the way for future growth
Focusing on customers and markets
WIELAND Dental + Technik GmbH & Co. KG, a major supplier
of dental system solutions as well as precious metals, materials
and semi-finished products for industrial applications, is adapt-
ing its organisational structures to better cater for the needs
of the market. The rapid technological developments of recent
years have increasingly led to the Dental and Industry Divisions
setting different strategic priorities. Whereas alloys, electro-
forming and precious metal recovery were previously core
business areas at WIELAND, today the areas of all-ceramic res-
torations and CAD/CAM are playing an ever more important
part. On the other hand, the Industry Division is increasingly
making its mark through innovative products in the sectors of
solar energy, electrical engineering and medical devices.
New management for the Industry Division
In order to do justice to these developments, Oliver Völlinger (44)
will in future be concentrating, in his role as member of the
executive management, exclusively on the Industry Division in
order to develop this sector still further and attain sustainable
growth for WIELAND in this area.
New management for the Dental Division
On August 1st 2009, Torsten Schwafert (44), previously Head of
Torsten Schwafert is the new executive in charge of the Dental Division. Since the beginning of August, the Dental and Industry Divisions have become independent of each other.
Torsten Schwafert, since August 1st 2009 the executive responsible for WIELAND’s Dental Division.
Sales and Marketing at DeguDent, assumed responsibility for
the Dental Division. His operative remit includes the areas of
R & D, sales and all aspects of CAD/CAM technology. After
training as an industrial manager and subsequently studying
business administration, Torsten Schwafert held a number of
senior positions in the areas of sales and marketing as well as in
corporate management, for example on the management board
of the Dutch company Elephant Dental B.V. In over 20 years
service to the dental industry, he has been responsible for the
successful introduction of many new technologies to the dental
market.
Continuity of experience and expertise
In addition, Reinhold Brommer (56) will remain in his post as
member of the management team within the Dental Division and
continue to contribute his many years of WIELAND experience.
Central coordination
The two operative divisions of WIELAND, Dental and Industry,
are centrally aligned to the interdisciplinary area of Finance and
Administration, which will be headed by Friedrich Karle (52),
previously Business Manager, who will in future take on the role
of CFO. Mr Karle is a business graduate with 25 years experience
in managerial positions in international companies.

The WIELAND X-Type NR systems are based on the intuitive, innovative and dynamic shade harmony system of the Creative Circle developed by Ernst A. Hegenbarth.
ZIROX NRX-Type
tray systems
Since August 1st 2009, Master Dental Tech-nician Ernst A. Hegenbarth has been part of the successful WIELAND ceramics team.
Ernst A. Hegenbarth, with a long-standing reputation both as
a knowledgeable and eloquent speaker at dental conferences
and known for his numerous publications, has decided to team
up with WIELAND. He was recently the driving force behind the
development of the NobelRondo™ systems at Nobel Biocare.
This line of ceramic materials for the veneering of aluminium
oxide and zirconium oxide frameworks was manufactured by
WIELAND Dental Ceramics. Nobel Biocare has now resolved to
discontinue the NobelRondo™ concept, but users can rest
assured: Wieland will be continuing with this successful concept
by incorporating it into the X-Type range of ceramics. On Sep-
tember 1st 2009 the existing ZIROX product line was expanded
by the addition of the ZIROX NR shade scheme which is 100 %
compatible with this tray system. In future, Mr Hegenbarth
will be assisting WIELAND by contributing his vast experience
in the areas of ceramics and CAD/CAM. Stay tuned for
further developments.
For many years, the WIELAND X-Type have been the preferred
veneering ceramics of dental labs worldwide.

As already described in WIELAND DIRECT 01/2009, WIELAND products are subject to a process of continuous improvement. This also applies to the area of veneering ceramics.
An example of this is provided by the addition of the new HITEX NF paste opaque,
specifically designed to meet the requirements of HITEX users. However, field trials
revealed that the established HITEX paste opaques also have many supporters. In
accordance with the veneering preferences of our ceramics customers, WIELAND will
therefore be retaining both paste opaques. We will therefore be keeping a close eye
on developments to see whether the traditional or the new – somewhat more
fluid – formula of this paste opaque will prevail.
