After the summer mystery season wraps up on Masterpiece this month, viewers can look forward to exciting new seasons of ongoing dramas — and entertaining new productions on the way. In September on Sunday nights, WETA will present The Miniaturist on Masterpiece, a three-part adaptation of the novel by Jessie Burton, set in 17th-century Amsterdam. The fi lm follows the young wife of a wealthy merchant as she realizes that nothing is as it seems in the household she has joined. Also premiering in September are new seasons of late-18th-century Cornwall swashbuckler-

romance Poldark, starring Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson, and The Durrells in Corfu.In production are an array of engaging series, including a new season of Victoria, adding Laurence Fox (Inspector

Lewis) to the cast, and a new season of Grantchester, with James Norton concluding his role and passing the baton to Tom Brittney (Outlander, Call the Midwife), who joins the cast as a new crime-solving reverend alongside Robson Green’s Geordie Keating. Also in the pipeline are a new adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, with Dominic West and David Oyelowo heading a distinguished British cast; the powerful drama Mrs. Wilson, based on a memoir by star Ruth Wilson’s grandmother; The Chaperone, being adapted by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes from Laura Moriarty’s best-selling novel and starring Elizabeth McGovern; and an adaptation of Jane Austen’s unfi nished fi nal novel, Sanditon. Outback & Wonders of MexicoWednesdays, August 1-15 at 8 & 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

Two Wednesday miniseries undertake journeys of exploration in early August, exploring the people, landscapes and animals of both Australia’s Outback and Mexico. The three-part series Outback, fi lmed over the course of the dramatic wet and dry seasons that dictate the region’s cycles of life, visits the Kimberley area of Northwest Australia — a vast, rugged and remote wilderness, bursting with character. As large as California, Kimberley has a population

of only about 40,000 people, who live alongside animals — from the saltwater crocodile, owner of the world’s most powerful jaws, to the most delicate of marsupial mice — that have adapted superbly to the extremes of their habitat. The spotlighted people who inhabit the region include the indigenous custodians of the land; station owners and cattlemen; wildlife enthusiasts; scientists; and an array of others.

Wonders of Mexico, also airing in three parts, explores the nation’s tropical forests, travels south along Mexico’s mountain spine, and journeys across Northern Mexico. In a country rich in culture and ablaze with color, the programs spotlight the seasons and discover hidden underworlds, the diversity of life and a mosaic of vast landscapes. Forests of the Maya (August 1) visits Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula; Mountain Worlds (August 8) follows butterfl ies and other denizens of the hills; and Burning North (August 15) visits the country’s northern desert regions.

In August, WETA reprises Masterpiece Mystery! series Sherlock, Season 4 (2017), starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s great sleuth Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as the detective’s long-suffering, faithful friend, Doctor Watson. Amanda Abbington (Mr. Selfridge) portrays Mary Watson. Holmes and Watson investigate crimes and battle diabolical villains as the sleuth employs his signature deductive reasoning and his stunning lack of social grace. The programs begin with the mercurial Holmes back once more on British soil, and Doctor Watson and his wife Mary preparing for their biggest challenge yet: becoming parents. Before Season 4 begins Sunday, August 5 at 9:30 p.m., WETA at 8 p.m. reprises the Emmy Award-winning Sherlock special The Abominable Bride, which weaves a storyline between contemporary times and Victorian London.

Also this month, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, Series 3 continues Thursdays, August 2 and 9, starring Patricia Routledge in her popular role as the Lancashire housewife-turned-detective. Airing as triple features, the Thursday presentations feature six cases, co-starring Derek Benfi eld as Wainthropp’s husband Robert and Dominic Monaghan as the sleuth’s assistant Geoffrey. Midsomer Murders, Series 13, featuring John Nettles in his fi nal season as police detective Tom Barnaby, also continues — with a case, new to WETA TV 26/HD and airing Monday, August 6, that surrounds a boxing event in fi ctional Midsomer County.

A new music special in the My Music series spotlights Grammy-winning artist Dionne Warwick, who has achieved legendary status worldwide with a string of hits from the 1960s through the 1980s that remain popular today. Beginning with her debut single, “Don’t Make Me Over,” Warwick became a pop-soul powerhouse, demonstrating a remarkable range of emotions with dozens of further song standards written and produced by Burt Bacharach and Hal David such as “Walk on By,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” and “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again.” Dionne Warwick: Then Came You traces the singer’s musical roots in the church, where she sang as a teen in a gospel group. She became a background singer performing with many classic R&B artists, leading to her discovery by Bacharach and David, who would go on to form a famously successful musical partnership with Warwick. The program presents for the fi rst time, rare, full-length archival performances of the Warwick-Bacharach-David 1960s favorites, as well as Warwick’s hits from the 1970s and 1980s, including “Then Came You” (with The Spinners), “I’ll Never Love This Way Again,” “Heartbreaker” and more.

A 2014 production created by WETA explores the extraordinary story of Alexandria, Virginia, a vibrant com-munity richly steeped in history, bringing the past to life and examining the city’s outsized role in American history through the centuries. The documentary Discovering Alexandria: The Early Years spotlights the community’s story from the 17th century through the post-Civil War years of the 19th century. The fi lm winds its way through many topics, including the French & Indian and Revolutionary wars; Alexandria as part of the British Empire; the role of the city in the Indepen-dence movement and nascent United States; the slave trade and the experience of the city’s African-American commu-nity; the War of 1812; the development of industry, canals and railroads; annexation to, and later retrocession from, the District of Columbia; and the Civil War years and momen-

tous changes wrought by the confl ict. Throughout, the fi lm documents the city’s planning, growth and architecture, illuminating the story of many local landmarks — and the prominent personalities whose names have resonated through the ages, including the Washington and Lee families.

Filmed over the course of five years by the team behind the acclaimed Pioneers of Television series, a new special presents a warm look at the life and career of the television and film legend Betty White, who celebrates 80 years in show business this year — the longest career in the history of television. Lauded for her roles as the bawdy Sue Ann on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, the innocent Rose on The Golden Girls and her more recent role as the worldly Elka on Hot in Cleveland, White is also an industry pioneer. She was the first woman to produce a national TV show, the first woman to star in a sitcom, the first producer to hire a female director and the first woman to receive an Emmy nomination. Betty White: First Lady of Television is packed with clips from her long career and comments from friends and co-stars, including Valerie Bertinelli, Tina Fey, Valerie Harper, Gavin MacLeod, Carl Reiner, Ryan Reynolds, Tom Sullivan and many more. The program — which repeats August 25 — traces White’s career in radio and television, including her history-making, Emmy Award-winning appearance hosting Saturday Night Live in 2010 at the age of 88.

Nature: Giraffes: Africa’s Gentle Giants

Wednesday, August 22 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HDIt’s ironic that the life of one of the world’s most identifiable and popular wild animals remains something of a mystery. Much of what we know about giraffes is due to the work of Dr. Julian Fennessy, co-founder and co-director of Giraffe Conservation Foundation, who has been studying the creatures for decades. Through the Australian scientist’s work, it has been revealed that there are multiple species of giraffe and that giraffe populations in Africa are in shocking decline, down by 40 percent in just two decades. The series Nature spotlights the Australian conservationist’s groundbreaking genetic research on the

animals, which led him to undertake an audacious mission in Uganda to save a very special group of giraffes. Giraffes: Africa’s Gentle Giants follows along as Fennessy leads a team in a project aimed at relocating some of the world’s rarest giraffes across the Nile River to a new, safer location that protects them from poaching and oil drilling.

A six-part, scripted New Zealand drama follows the life of Sir Edmund Hillary, best known as the fi rst man to conquer the world’s tallest peak, Mount Everest. Andrew Munro stars as Hillary, with Dean O’Gorman portraying his lifelong friend and climbing companion, George Lowe. Amy Usherwood plays Hillary’s wife, Lady Louise. Based on thousands of hours of exclusive interviews, Hillary tells the story of the mountaineer and philanthropist. From his beekeeping days in South Auckland, to his ascent of the world’s highest mountain with Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, to the plane crash that killed his wife and daughter, the series lovingly and vividly brings to life the man New Zealanders affectionately call “Sir Ed.” When he summited Everest in May 1953, Hillary put his small home country on the map. He was so beloved in New Zealand that his likeness is featured on the fi ve-dollar note, and he was given a state funeral after his 2008 death. After he gained fame for his mountaineering and other explorations, he devoted himself to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal, establishing and heading the humanitarian organization The Himalayan Trust.

In the British supernatural sitcom Marley’s Ghosts, magistrate Marley Wise (Sarah Alexander of Coupling and The Worst Week of My Life) has a rare gift — she can see and talk to the dead. After a bizarre twist of fate, the departed now sadly include her husband Adam (John Hannah, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Sliding Doors), who meets his end via a chicken bone; her lover Michael from her offi ce (Nicholas Burns), via a car accident; and the local vicar (Jo Joyner, EastEnders), driver of the car. Unfortunately for

Marley, the deceased come to live in her apartment. One slovenly, one vain and one sweet but misguided, the three become very challenging roommates, and only Marley can perceive and interact with them. The 2015 series follows the protagonist as she tries her best to work, love and, most importantly, live, while sharing her life with this trio of ghosts. Juggling the demands of competing ghostly affections, roommate feuds, and terrible priestly advice, she feels the impact of death upon her life in surprising ways. Can they all learn to co-exist under the same roof? WETA UK presents Series 1 and 2, featuring a total of 9 episodes.

In the high-tech, fast-paced crime thriller The Body Farm, a spin-off from the series Waking the Dead, exceptional forensic pathologist Dr. Eve Lockhart (Tara Fitzgerald) returns with a new team of scientists to unlock clues held by murder victims and hunt the trail of killers. The investigative group explores evidence and answers at a private lab, the Body Farm, where the boundaries of experimental forensic research are pushed to the limit. Lockhart’s colleagues Rosa and Mike take on fi eld work with gusto, and scientifi cally brilliant Oggy remains immersed in his work in the lab. The head of the operation and heart of the team, Lockhart is the only member of the group who has experience dealing with the aftermath of horrifi c crimes. When called on by the police to help solve a series of grisly murders, she sees an opportunity both to pay the bills and expand the horizons of her operation. Alongside hardened homicide detective DI Hale, portrayed by Keith Allen (Trainspotting, Robin Hood), the Body Farm team works to achieve results and catch a killer. Soon drawn into their world, Hale fi nds that the lab’s techniques are absolutely vital to his police work.B

After Series 3 concludes on August 18, Patricia Routledge returns as the redoubtable heroine sleuth in the final season (Series 4) of mystery drama Hetty Wainthropp Investigates starting August 25. Supported by her trusty assistant, Geoffrey Shawcross (Dominic Monaghan of The Lord of the Rings, Lost) and her devoted husband, Robert (Derek Benfield) — often called upon to go undercover in her cases — Hetty tackles her most challenging investigations yet, occasionally cooperating with local policeman DCI Adams (John Graham Davies). Now well established as a successful and respectable investigation agency, Hetty’s business is sought out by clients near and far. In the six final cases, the working-class Lancashire detective probes a theft at the behest of a widow, explores the circumstances surrounding a death, undertakes a property conflict mediation, probes an attack on a friend’s husband, trails a smuggling operation, and looks into a woman’s disappearance.

Watch Doc Martin from the very beginning as WETA UK reprises Series 1 starting August 7. Starring Martin Clunes (Men Behaving Badly, Jeeves and Wooster) as the irascible doctor, the popular comedy drama follows the life of fictional London surgeon Martin Ellingham, whose truculence and tactless manner cause mayhem in a small Cornish community. After developing a phobia surrounding blood and retraining as a general practitioner, he flees big-city life and

gets a job in the beautiful but sleepy village of Portwenn, replacing the countryside town’s deceased local doctor. But his abrasive personality doesn’t exactly mesh with the pace of life in Cornwall, where the cultures clash and the sparks fly. The local townsfolk are an odd bunch — varying from the doctor’s young, incompetent secretary to the good-natured plumber and from the depressed town constable to Martin’s spirited aunt. And there is also a lovely local schoolteacher (portrayed by Caroline Catz), who catches the awkward doctor’s eye.

WETA UK reprises a three-part biographical drama that stars BAFTA Award-winning actress Sheridan Smith, OBE (Mrs. Biggs, Black Work) in the true story of Priscilla White, a young typist from working-class Liverpool who, championed by The Beatles, achieved stardom in the United Kingdom as musical artist and entertainer Cilla Black. She enjoyed a 50-year career in show business. In the drama, singing with local Liverpool bands as the Merseybeat music scene explodes in the early 1960’s, Priscilla falls for a local man, Bobby Willis (Aneurin Barnard), a chancer who ignores the city’s Protestant-Catholic divide to pursue her. A third main character, Brian Epstein (portrayed by Ed Stoppard), is the young marketing and management genius who would later guide The Beatles to superstardom. Cilla relates the true story of how the lives of the three intertwine to propel the talented singer to the top of the charts and beyond.

For the past two years, Classical WETA 90.9 FM has partnered with Washington Bach Consort to honor their late founder, J. Reilly Lewis, and chronicle their search for the musician who will succeed him as

artistic director. During this time, we presented in our Sunday-night Choral Showcase series the fi ve “audition” concerts conducted by the fi ve fi nalists as part of the Consort’s season at National Presbyterian Church in Washington. On our website, classicalweta.org, we also featured Classical Conversations interviews with each candidate, shining the spotlight on their background, accomplishments and aspirations.

Throughout the process, Washington Bach Consort solicited audience feedback based on the live concerts, our broadcasts and our interviews. The Consort has made their decision, and on August 1 at 8:15 a.m. Classical WETA will reveal this news on the air. We will also present a Classical Conversations feature with the new artistic director then and over the next several days. Details will be available at classicalweta.org on August 1 after our announcement.

Our coverage will culminate with the Sunday, August 5 Choral Showcase program, focusing on Washington Bach Consort and its new leader. Classical WETA announcer — and choral music lover — Bill Bukowski will host this broadcast. I am pleased to announce that Bill will continue to host Choral Showcase on a weekly basis thereafter. Showcasing performances recorded from Chamber Music at the Barns, the series Center Stage from Wolf Trap continues Saturday evenings at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM. This month on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Monday-night program Front Row Washington, we celebrate The Phillips Collection, an intimate museum in Washington, D.C. with a weekly concert series featuring some of the most respected and emerging artists in classical music. Each broadcast presents a varied ensemble and program, starting on August 6 with a concert that will expand your musical horizons! It features violinist Niklas Walentin and pianist

Christina Bjørkøe in concert with So Percussion. They start with violin sonatas by Carl Nielson and Johannes Brahms before moving to Story from Living Room Music by American avant-garde composer John Cage. The latter work is a composition for unspecifi ed instruments, all of which may be found in a living room of a typical home. The engaging concert continues with American minimalist composer Steve Reich’s ingenious work Clapping Music, which is performed by clapping and uses only one measure of music for two groups of percussionists. The measure is repeated fi ve times before one group shifts the rhythm seamlessly by an eighth note. The measure is repeated another fi ve times before shifting it again, and this process repeats until the two groups are back in unison on the original rhythm. It’s a hypnotic 3-minute journey as the music gets further and further apart before slowly coming back together. The performance concludes with Lou Harrison’s Concerto for Violin and Percussion Orchestra, which uses only a select few musical intervals for the violin solo to create an expansive soundscape accompanied by unusual percussion instruments.

Also this month, the August 13 program showcases pianist Shai Wosner in the fi rst part of a two-concert series that features the fi nal six piano sonatas by Franz Schubert. The Alexander String Quartet performs on August 20, interpreting string quartets by Zoltán Kodály and Dmitri Shostakovich. They also give the Washington, D.C. premiere of Tarik O’Regan’s Gradual, a work inspired by the subtle and beautiful landscape of Idaho, captured in 30 short sections of music. The fi nal Front Row Washington program this month from The Phillips Collection is a varied selection of music performed by violinist Aleksey Semenenko and pianist Inna Firsova on the August 27 broadcast. Selections include ardent interpretations of Debussy’s La fi lle aux cheveux de lin and Clair de Lune — and also Henryk Wieniawski’s Fantasie brillante on themes from Gounod’s Faust.
