From the Bishop of Newcastle,
the Rt Revd Martin Wharton:
Dear Friends,
Many of you will know that I reach my 70th
birthday in August, when I will have served for
seventeen years as your Bishop. I am writing to let
you know that Her Majesty the Queen has
graciously accepted my resignation.
It has been a privilege to serve the people and
communities of Newcastle, North Tyneside and
Northumberland as your Bishop since 1997 and
over these years I have formed a deep and lasting
attachment to so many people in the parishes and
deaneries.
I wish to invite as many of you as possible to join
me in the Cathedral at 4.00 p.m. on Sunday 21st
September, 2014 to say goodbye and to give our
thanks for God’s gracious love to us all. No tickets
are required and all are welcome.
Bishop Frank will lead the Diocese during the
vacancy, ably supported by the Dean and the
Archdeacons and the dedicated team at Bishop’s
House and Church House. Please pray for them as
they carry extra responsibilities during the coming
months.
Marlene and I have been constantly humbled and
encouraged by the faithful dedication and service
of the clergy and laity of the Diocese. You have
been the greatest support to us in countless ways
and it has been a joy to serve as your Bishop. We
will always treasure the friendships we have made
and will continue to hold this wonderful Diocese
and its people in our prayers during these coming
months as the process begins for the appointment
of the twelfth Bishop of Newcastle.
With every good wish and blessing.
+ Martin

Notice to clergy and Readers: arrangements for Continuing Ministerial Development from 5th May 2014
As many will now know, the Revd Dr Alan Gregory, our Continuing Ministerial Development Officer, is leaving Newcastle Diocese to become the Principal of the South East Institute for Theological Education (SEITE). Alan goes with our prayers, support and gratitude for his contribution to the diocese and, in particular, to Continuing Ministerial Development for our licensed ministers.
From Monday 5th May 2014, the Revd Dr Martin Kitchen will fulfil an interim role as Continuing Ministerial Development Officer for key aspects of CMD. Martin will have responsibility for the following:
the Ministerial Development Review process, including follow-up with individual clergy;
grant requests for training and development (including request from Readers and Clergy with Permission to Officiate);
arrangements for sabbaticals.
Martin has served in senior positions in the Dioceses of Durham and Derby. He was previously Bishop’s Officer for Continuing Ministerial Education in Southwark Diocese. We welcome Martin to this part-time role and look forward to working with him.
Martin’s contact details are: telephone number: (01434) 689 696; e-mail: [email protected] . Martin will work both from home (in Wall, Hexham, Northumberland) and also out of Church House, North Shields where he is happy to meet people.
The CMD website will continue to function and can be found at www.cmdnewcastle.org - please continue to use the website to apply for CMD grants in the usual way. If there are any questions about how the website works then please direct any questions to the Revd Catherine Pickford ([email protected]) who will be overseeing the management of the website during the vacancy.
The CMD Task Group, led by Catherine, will continue to offer development opportunities, including the induction course for new clergy. Notices for these events will continue to be posted on the website.
If there are any questions concerning CMD during the forthcoming vacancy, or if there are any difficulties that need to be resolved, then please contact me on (01670) 503 810 or [email protected] and I will arrange for a response as soon as possible. Any fresh information about procedures will be posted in the e-Bulletin.

Lord Crewe's Charity: Educational Grants 2014-15
The application procedure for educational grants from Lord Crewe's Charity for the school year 2014-15 is now open.
Grants are open to clergy who are licensed or have permission to officiate in the Diocese, and have dependent children in full
time school education or studying for a first degree or equivalent vocational skills course.
Eligibility is also measured against the gross family income in the tax year 2013-14. Grants for those with school age children will
be limited to those whose income is below twice the stipend (calculated at £46,440 for 2014-15 applications). Those above this
threshold may apply in respect of children undertaking first degree or equivalent, but if a grant is awarded it will be at a lower
rate than for those below the threshold.
To make an application you need to complete and application form and return it by 20th June 2014. You will be informed of any
award in September 2014 and any grant will be paid in two equal instalments, in September 2014 and March 2015.
From September 2014 we will only be making payments by direct electronic payment (BACS transfer) and you will need to pro-
vide us with the necessary bank details, if you have not already done so.
The application form, guidance for applicants, and BACS authorisation form are available to download from the secure clergy
area on our web site at www.lordcrewescharity.org.uk. If you click on the Clergy button at the top of the home page you will
either be logged in or asked to register, if you have not already done so. You are strongly advised to register here as this is where
we will post any news on these grants and is the easiest way to make and respond to queries.
We still come across clergy who are unaware of these grants, or think they are only for those with children at fee-paying
schools - this is not the case at all.
If you received a grant in 2013-14 you should be receiving these forms shortly along with payment of the March 2014
second instalment.

The BBC’s Junior Songs of Praise will be an exciting event with special guests, one or two CBBC stars, and some great feelgood music led by a live band.
Don’t wait—apply now for tickets at [email protected]
In addition to the main crowd the BBC now needs to recruit a large group of 200 children (and adults with them) who can come to an advance rehearsal on 29th May, (location to be confirmed), to learn the songs with enthusiastic music leader Dave Lawrence.
If you can come to that, you're guaranteed a place near the very front of the crowd on Saturday 31st. No prior musical training is required, only enthusiasm!
If you know choirs from schools, churches or music clubs who'd like to come as a group, please contact [email protected] as soon as possible.

Modern Church invites you to its annual conference:
A Liberating Spirit? Exploring Spirituality for the 21st Century
Monday 14 July – Thursday 17 July 2014 at High Leigh Conference Centre
Chaired by Canon Prof Martyn Percy
What might be a “liberal” approach to spirituality? Many in our world have lost interest in institutions and are weary with dogmatic arguments but are looking for authentic, intelligent and accessible ways of reflecting on the realities and mysteries of life which can actually make a difference to their own lives. This conference will be an opportunity to explore some of the contemporary approaches to spirituality through the lens of open minded and well-informed enquiry.
Further details of speakers, costs, accommodation at www.modernchurch.org.uk/conference/conference.html
Please note that there are a few free places for students, or those on low incomes, who would like to help with recording and other tasks during the conference.

Energy Choices Network event In 2013 the Diocese set up an informal Energy Choices Network, its first meeting being held on 5th February of that year.
The purpose of the Network was to share information and experience of renewable energy in a world where random and unreliable information continues to proliferate and confuse. The first meeting reported on local church improvement schemes where renewable sources of energy played a significant part. They could also be useful sources of reference and information for other churches in our Diocese interested in exploring similar possibilities themselves.
Although at our next meeting in June we will be informally sharing any energy news relevant to the Network as usual, we
will also have two speakers. Roger Styring, who advises the DAC on church heating systems, will share his experience of
helping parishes make choices in this area, while David Archer who has prepared some exploratory renewable work at
Prudhoe will discuss climate change and renewables.
The meeting is open to anyone interested in energy choices, as well as to registered members of the Network.
The meeting is from 6.00pm to 8.30pm on Monday 2nd June, with refreshments available from 5.30pm.
The venue is the Community Room at Holy Nativity Church, Hillhead Parkway, Chapel House, Newcastle. If you wish to
attend, please book your place by emailing David Lovie of Inspired North East on [email protected]
BEFORE 28th May.

Our next clergy conference is now just over one
month away when Bishop Martin will gather together
all licensed clergy, Church Army Officers and Advisers
for one last time. Our theme explores the hospitality
of the gospel in which we share, and which we offer to
the world.
We are anticipating inspiring and challenging input from our
conference speakers and guests: Dr Paula Gooder is keynote
speaker, and the line up includes Prof Nicholas Sagovsky, the
Revd Dr Michael Volland, the Revd Andrew Walker and TV
Presenter John Grundy. We also look forward to being joined
by representatives of our link dioceses in Botswana, Møre and
Winchester.
As well as learning together, the conference will be a place to
celebrate the generous, engaged and open hospitality we al-
ready offer throughout our diocese; perhaps you cook a pen-
sioners’ lunch, contribute to a Foodbank, hold beer and hymns
evenings, offer church meals or parties, or run café church? At
the conference we would like to share our stories of hospitali-
ty through photographs. If you have photos of events, services,
projects or occasions where hospitality is offered through
your church, chaplaincy or other area of ministry which can be
shared, please email them to [email protected] (photos will be
projected on to large screens and will need to be of good
quality).
As part of our time together there will be informal, and hope-
fully humorous, ‘After Dinner Entertainment’ one evening; if
you would like to let out the hidden extrovert inside, or find
out more about how you might get involved, please contact
Pat Craighead at [email protected] as soon as pos-
sible.
Further information about the conference is available
from the Conference Planning Group’s Chair: Mark
Wroe ([email protected] or 0191 240 1017).
Please also keep looking out for updates and more
news in future e-Bulletins, and check out the confer-
ence Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ndconf14.

Saturday 17th May 2014 09.45am for 10.00am -4.00pm
Elaine Lindridge, Ben Norton Fresh Expressions vision days are a dynamic way to explore new ways of being church and how to form them. Over 6,000 people in over 80 places in the UK and worldwide have discov-ered more about fresh expressions of church and have come away with a real desire to work with God and develop their dreams. In a fun and interactive way, vision days give you the chance to:
share your story;
think about what it is to be church;
ask questions;
find out about fresh expressions;
discover resources;
build networks and relationships.
Vision days are ideal for complete beginners, those with real questions about fresh expressions of church and mission-shaped church, people who have started something new and need some practical help, and Christians from all churches and traditions.
Andrew Roberts, director of training for Fresh Expressions, says, “Each vision day is carefully planned in partnership with local churches to ensure that it is relevant in that particular area and context.”
The cost of the day is £5.00 including refreshments and lunch. Please make any cheques payable to Lindisfarne RTP.

Images of God for Young Children This beautifully illus-trated book tackles a complex subject: Who is God? What is our understanding of Him? We cannot
know what God looks like, but this book uses Biblical metaphors combined with short and simple reflections to help young children discov-er who God is to us. Ideal to be used with KS1 age children.
This month, the RRC is Thinking About Art in Religion.

Safeguarding From the Revd Jean Skinner
The Safeguarding website has been updated recently (this is still a work in progress).
I have reviewed the Child Protection Guidelines and updated them. The only major change is the terminology; the basic guidance on child protection and good practice has not changed but is now in a shorter format.
There is new Safer Recruitment guidance which you can download from within the main ‘Getting Started’ document.
The main forms needed for recruiting volunteers can be downloaded from within the ‘Getting Started’ document or from the list on the Safeguarding home page.
All the various forms are now available in a downloadable Forms Pack.
References and Legislation is now a downloadable pack.
More downloads will be added to the site in due course:

In Review is a monthly downloadable tabloid sized (A3) newspaper
published by the National Church Institutions of the Church of
England. It aims to keep you in touch with the activities of the
Archbishops' Council, Church Commissioners, the Church of
England Pensions Board and other bodies who serve the Church at
national level. Please do print it off and post it on your church's
noticeboard.
In Focus is a monthly downloadable A5 insert designed for parish
magazines with the best of the material which appears in the full
newspaper.
Both publications will be available for download around the 15th of
the previous month, to allow parishes to have them in place for the
beginning of the new month.
Download from this page.
The Lindisfarne RTP, the dioceses of Durham and Newcastle and the Methodist (NE Region) Discipleship and Ministries Network, are delighted to make msm available locally.
We believe it will be a significant resource for building the Kingdom of God in this area.
Individuals are most welcome, but we particularly hope that small groups from a church or fresh expression will come as this will deepen the impact of the course.

Football after school?
Two Christian Youth Workers are offering churches around Newcastle and North Tyneside an opportunity to book a football cage for after school outreach.
They are looking to work once a week with several different churches on weekday afternoons when High School students finish school and offer them the chance to take part in 2v2 football tournaments and coaching from 3.30pm - 5.30pm.
Churches may want to try this as a way of connecting with young people who may be hanging around after school.
A donation from participating churches for each session would be welcome to cover staff and fuel costs.
For further Information please contact Andrew Shipton on 0191 236 3788 or [email protected].
