efore Rudolphs, “bar-b-que joints” were called “joints” for a very good

reason. They served tasty ribs, but were dingy smoke-filled dives.

James (Jimmy) Theros changed all that on June 20, 1975, when he

opened Rudolphs Bar-B-Que on the corner of Lyndale & Franklin in south Min-

neapolis. Not only did Rudolphs serve award-winning, tantalizingly tasty, savory ribs,

but the restaurant itself was fun yet classy, with a touch of the burlesque.

Why is this emporium of epicurean delights called “Rudolphs?” Because Rudolph

Valentino (our namesake) was considered the greatest sex symbol in the silent pic-

ture era. When this movie star tragically died in 1926 at the age of 31, more than

80,000 fans showed up at his funeral to pay their final respects — and the cere-

mony almost turned into a riot. By naming our restaurant after Rudolph, we con-

tinue to pay homage to his impressive prowess.

Rudolphs Bar-B-Que has undergone several updates since 1975. The Marlene

Dietrich Room was added in 1980 to accommodate our many patrons. In ’94, the

festive Island Bar was created. A few years ago, the bathrooms and exterior were

extensively renovated, plus the Oasis Room was added.

One thing that hasn’t changed over the years is our taste-tempting foods. Our

cole slaw, ribs, bar-b-que sauce and marinade recipes remain the same since Jimmy

introduced them in 1975. It’s why our loyal customers keep coming back for more

and it’s why we have won countless awards over the decades (including national

awards for “best ribs,” “best sauce,” and “best bar-b-que” at the prestigious Cleveland

Rib Cook-Off in 1983 & 1985).

The Theros Family appreciates your patronage and extends a hearty welcome
