Digital vs AnalogHow do students record their assignments?
John Ajoloko ,Katie Conboy , Cara Nason
Initial inspiration
Throughout various classes taken at JWU we noticed that regardless of what technological devices people brought to class they were still using a paper planner to record assignments.
Hypothesis
There is a relationship between students using analog options to record their schedules and their ability to trust in existing technologies designed for scheduling.
Potential Opportunity
opportunity for an outside company to create an online organizer or calendar application that is tailored to the needs of students at Johnson and Wales. By creating this calendar and becoming affiliated with Johnson and Wales, this company has the potential to expand their client base, start new relationships with users and fulfill a need.
Population Description
Full time JWU day students ( Providence Campus) Continuing Education taking at least 2 night classes
Method of Communication
Distributed our Qualtrics.com survey through email, Facebook, Twitter, and distributing printed copies at night students
Demographics
Enrollment Status Class Rank Program of Study Domestic or International Age Gender Have Children Hours Worked Laptop, Smartphone, Tablet and Planner ownership
Behaviors
What items are people bringing to class? What items are people using to record assignments? What items are people using to take notes during class? Scheduling habits outside of school setting Previous scheduling habits ( school agendas)
Attitudes
Is technology discouraged in the class room Comfort levels in using the various methods Willingness to use an electronic planner created for students
Frequencies
Full time day students attitudes about technology in the class room
Cross Tabulations
While students bring Electronic Device to class they choose to use analogue agendas
Cross Tabulations continued
Based on how many hours worked is there a difference in technological choice
Cross Tabulations continued
What you own vs. what you bring to class
Results and recommendations
Our hypothesis is correct It would not be beneficial to create a digital calendar as students
would still use their analog ones. Since a majority of respondents to the survey were upperclassmen in
the college of business we may want to repeat study on lower classmen only to determine if the upcoming classes have the same attitudes
Perform the survey in schools beyond college of business to see if there are differences.
Create a line of agendas ( or add to existing line) to sell in the bookstore.
