Digital Factory Acceptance Test (E-FAT)

Before machines or heavy equipment can be

transported to the customer, a Factory Acceptance

Test (FAT) has to be carried out. The FAT helps verify

whether the newly manufactured or assembled

product meets its intended purpose. The FAT

validates the operation of the machine and makes

sure the customers’ requirements have been

met. The test helps assure both parties that the

new machine or equipment complies with all the

specifications mentioned in the contract. In addition,

it helps to address functional issues before the

machine arrives at the installation site.

To perform this test, customers have to be present at

the company’s factory site. However, it is not always

possible for the customers to visit the site due to

distance or travel restrictions. This can cause costly

delays. With the use of Remote Assistance, the FAT

can be performed from remote locations, minimizing

delays and travel time; making it a Digital Factory

Acceptance Test (E-FAT).

Digital Site Acceptance Test (E-SAT)

After the installation of new products at the site of

the customer, a Site Acceptance Test (SAT) has to be

performed. The SAT provides an opportunity for final

confirmation that the machines or equipment still

meet the requirements after the systems are installed

on-site, ensuring that nothing has changed or was

damaged during the shipment and installation.

This test is carried out at the customer’s site,

meaning that the inspectors from the vendor

have to be present. As mentioned before, it is

not always possible to visit sites due to distance

or travel restrictions. This can be solved with the

implementation of Remote Assist. Carrying out the

SAT can be done digitally (E-SAT), minimizing travel

time and possible delays.

Remote Assist

With the use of Mixed Reality, FAT and SAT can

become a Digital FAT and SAT. This is achieved by

implementing the use of Remote Assist, and more

specifically Microsoft Dynamics 365 Remote Assist.

Remote Assist is a subscription-based software

that allows anyone to receive assistance or perform

inspections from a remote expert. This can be

achieved with the use of a mobile device such as

a smartphone or smart glasses like the Microsoft

HoloLens or the Realware HMT-1.

What is “Digital FAT and SAT”?

Digital FAT and SAT can be realized with the use

of Mixed Reality glasses for the remote validation.

The operator that is on-site wears the glasses

that transmits live footage through the camera.

The other party (either the customer’s or the

company’s representative) will receive this live

footage through Teams on a mobile device. With

the integrated microphone, the headset allows

real-time and remote communication with the

other party. The operator can now perform

the test while the customer watches closely. In

addition, important documents such as check

lists can be shared to ensure the tests are

performed correctly.

Remote Assist offers a high number of

functionalities. We present the core aspects that

• Remote Assist requires a minimum of

2 users to be functional; the person

operating the Mixed Reality device and the

person that is watching through Teams on

a desktop.

• It is a mobile solution as it can be operated

AWL is a company that builds welding robots for

customers across the world. Before the machinery

leaves the factory, a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT)

has to take place. Normally, this would mean that

customers of AWL would travel from across the world to

Harderwijk to perform the FAT.

However, due to recent developments with respect

to COVID-19, it is not always possible to travel to

Harderwijk. Therefore, AWL started to implement

Dynamics 365 Remote Assist together with the use of

the HoloLens 2 into this process. An AWL-expert can now

demonstrate all the functionalities of the machine from

a remote location. The customer can see everything

the expert sees through the HoloLens with the use of

Microsoft Teams. They can also exchange feedback and

tips to fully approve the machinery.

After the machine has been approved, the HoloLens

is sent with the machine to provide the customers

with high-quality customer service. After delivery, the

customers can now use the HoloLens with Remote

Assist to call in assistance from the AWL-experts to

install the machine properly. This enabled AWL to

decrease travel-time for both themselves and the

customer, making it an efficient process.
